I thought I’d resurrect this thread partly because books have come up separately but mostly because I’ve just finished one of the greatest books I’ve ever read. Namely… The Greatest: My Own Story. Muhammad Ali’s 1975 autobiography. An amazing book. It takes you from his early life to the Rumble in the Jungle and the Thrilla in Manila. But it’s the story behind those well know chapters in his life that makes the book; why he changed his name and why he called his original name his slave name, why he threw his Olympic medal away, why he gave up his title by refusing the draft, why he did all the poetry and bad mouthing. The actual boxing doesn’t really feature in great detail until that fight with Foreman which he goes through round by round and is a real eye opener. Told with humour, honesty and modesty (honest). This is a MUST read. You will not be disappointed. I read this when I was about 10 or 11 quite bizarrely! I love a good boxing book, will have to get a copy again. Highly recommend this: www.goodreads.com/book/show/1702266.The_Gloves

Ali, by Jonathan Eig, is an excellent biography of the man and deals with all the contradictions of his life in an even-handed way.
I've just finished Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. I knew it was a satire on the inanity of war, much like Evelyn Waugh's Men at Arms which may have influenced it, but I had no idea it was as comical. Enjoyed it.

Been blitzing loads of old Stephen Kings lately after being amazed with how good Billy Summers was. Mr Mercedes, The Dead Zone, Salem's Lot, The Shining, all 5 out of 5. only 3.5 for Rose Madder but I'll give him the odd off day! Also read my first of his Richard Bachman books - The Long Walk. Just brilliant. Slightly dystopian, near future, 100 teenage boys have to keep walking at more than 4 mph and get eliminated (I'll say no more!) if they drop below it more than 3 times (don't think that's a spoiler!!).
Different tangent - Mick Conefrey's trilogy on the 3 highest mountains being climbed for the first time. Loads of detail and background. Did these as audiobooks and I highly recommend them.

I’m massively into John Grisham. Just finished his latest The Judges List and now re-reading The Chamber. Recently read Rise Of The Underdog by Danny Higginbottom, this wasn’t too bad compared to some of the dross footballer books out there. Also recently read Our Boys:Story of a Paratrooper. About Private Dave Parr who was killed on Wireless Ridge fighting with 2 Para in Falklands war. Written by his niece Helen Parr…not your normal Falklands war book but a lot about social aspects of Paras and the after effect of the war on many fighting soldiers and their families.

Just finished Red Notice by Bill Browder.
It’s the story of an American financier’s experiences in Russia since the fall of communism. It explains the rise of the oligarchs and paints a picture of Putin and the Russia he now controls and to what lengths he goes to achieve control including murder.
And it’s the story of that murder, Sergei Magnitsky, in police custody and the aftermath that provides the biggest punch in this incredible book.
After reading this book I now much better understand what has been going on in Russia that took us to this point where we are today.
A 5 star must read book.

Just finished rereading The Brethren by John Grisham.
Just started And God Created Cricket by Simon Hughes, which is a bit of a humorous history of the great game.
Next it's Brothers In Arms by James Holland, which describes one tank regiments involvement in WWII from D-Day to VE Day in Holland.

Just finished Justice on Trial by Chris Daw QC It's completely changed my view about incarceration, what we are currently doing with that and the war on drugs are having the opposite effect to that which we as a society are trying to achieve and he illustrates how and why perfectly. I read it in 2 days, unusual for me. Fascinating. Edit - There's more info on the link, it's a podcast with the author, mainly about the book but some stuff about him also. legallyspeakingpodcast.com/justice-on-trial/

Anyone here read any of Joseph Knox's stuff?
Just started The Sleepwalker and highly recommend The Smiling Man.
Rankinesque writing with a protagonist grubbier than Rebus. Has the added benefit of being set in Manchester, so if you're familiar with the city it's easy to visualise.

What them poor people have gone through makes me mad as hell
And

I've got everything I could get my hands on that Hunter S Thompson wrote. Nearly wrote my dissertation on him. Hells Angels is worth a read. His political books are great, his take on now would be unreal.
