The Royal Family cost each of us about £1.50 odd a year and bring in billions a year. Call me old fashioned but I think they're paying their way. How do we actually quantify what they bring in? The cliche I hear a lot is something to do with tourists in London... A reminder that London is one of the G8 capital's of the world with two of the biggest clubs in England, Chelsea and Spurs. They also have several good sized clubs like West Ham and Palace... It also has Wembley. London also has the one of the best transport networks in the world, compromising of several airports and the tube links. Then throw in the fact it arguably has the most luxurious shopping districts in the UK and is home to thousands of celebrities, businessman and money from abroad. Yet all that would change is the monarchy was fucked off... Really? Don't think so. Here is your answer: fullfact.org/news/royal-family-are-we-getting-our-moneys-worth/fullfact.org/economy/royal-family-what-are-costs-and-benefits/The French President costs France 100m Euros. www.statista.com/statistics/467754/presidency-french-republic-expenses/

What if, instead of the (extremely outside) chance they'll see one of them, they could have a walk around where they used to live? Who cares. Insignificant next to the royal family. Visitor numbers to the Palace of Versailles would suggest otherwise.

London is most definitely second to New York already. Not for me it isn't.... and it's precisely because of the traditional and historic aspect. You are in a minority I’m afraid. New York is the biggest city in the world for most people, London second.

I would visit London a lot more if the Royal Family were abolished and I could actually go in and see first hand the ghastly wealth and extravagance they've enjoyed living and working in Buckingham Palace.
They're a relic and should be confined to and preserved in history where monarchy belongs. They're an important part of our heritage but that doesn't mean they need to be an important part of our future.
No right minded society would have a monarchy if we were starting from scratch.

I also think lots of people conflate anti monarchy views with the notion that the royals are bad people who haven't done anything for the country.
I don't think most people are saying that at all. The Queen has done a marvellous job of the role that she's been given and I respect her for that - that doesn't mean that the role should exist in its current form though.
Every position of power in a truly democratic society should be obtainable by every single citizen.
We absolutely need a head of state but it shouldn't be awarded based on bloodlines.

I have no idea. So visitor numbers to a vacated Royal Palace bear no relevance to the possible visitor numbers to a currently occupied Royal Palace? I think I'm done with this.

Once it’s vacated the Mayor will probably knock it down as it reminds “everyone” of the privileged Royals. He’d probably turn it into a Mall or flats.

Of course, it'll be down to the Mayor and him alone..

Republican Paris with its monarch free Palaces at #2. Who'd have thought it! Not Tommy, that's for sure. But yeah, I guess that's conclusive proof that having Royals makes no difference to tourism Edit... and FYI, Bangkok is in first place is in Thailand and they have a Royal family. Who'd have thought it!

Losing the argument so just make up another criteria to suit ones own purpose. Ely logic... 2 + 2 = 5&^4668^#48! Edit: First time in my life I've used 'ones' in that context. Seems you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Can Thai nationals enter for free? I thought the criteria being discussed was Palaces, the occupation (or not) thereof and the effect on tourism?

Who needs the changing of the guards, royal weddings or processions when you can perv through a celebs window.

The palace is also still used to host Royal events in any case.

I think after 11 pages we can safely conclude that the only reason anyone goes to London is to see the Royal family.

Certainly a massive factor for me and the people I was with, hours and hours we waited near that Bangkok Royal Palace, never saw a Royal once. Apparently none of them ever visited that particular bar

You're welcome to you sentimentality about the Royle Family, I am confident a lot of people see New York as the world's biggest city. Hope that's worded better for you.

To be fair mate, you can't really talk when it comes to goalpost moving on this issue. Even on this very page, he gave you an example of another Royal palace which you then decided shouldn't count and didn't even try to justify why it shouldn't or what criteria you were now using, you just arbitrarily decided it was irrelevant....a bit Trumpesque to be honest
