As someone who considers himself Generation Y rather than a whiny millennial, I find it hard to get along with our current cultural norms tech-wise.... Here's a happy thread for those who grew up in the late 90's and 00's to fondly remember some of the good, bad and the downright shite technology that we pissed around with during our teenage years Feel free to be as technical or non-technical as you want. I'm going to try and keep this going for a few weeks before it's inevitably overtaken by swathes of darkness that usually fills up the EE board... happiness is good. To start with The Good... MSN Messenger, eventually Live Messenger. Just how good was that...? If you were a teenager between 1999 and 2010, you had it and you probably used it most days of the week. It was absolutely years ahead of it's time and was probably the only cool piece of software Microsoft ever made. Free music file sharing before YouTube effectively killed it: Napster... then it was Morpheus.... then it was Kazaa (in my eyes, the golden years) then it was LimeWire when it fell to shit... + all those other weird ones, BearShare, eMule (never ever got that to work... not once), iMesh, WinMX etc. and on that point, those very sketchy file upload sites... Rapidshare, Megaupload, etc etc. GameBoy... probably with Pokemon Red, Blue or Yellow and Tetris... Non-Touch iPod's (Shuffle, Nano etc)... probably not the best MP3 player, but they were everywhere. (If you are a guitarist) Guitar Pro 5.... and Ultimate-Guitar.com. Fucking every tab, for any fucking song you wanted to play and another piece of software that was years ahead of it's time... which is why I still use it to this day. The Bad... Anti-Virus Software, now yes, I know they were absolutely necessary thanks to Microsoft's inability to make a secure OS but just how bad were some of those Anti-Virus suites back in the noughties? Fucking Norton Anti-Virus? Does anyone remember that? Curiously does anyone still use it? I remember that upon installing it on your super-fast new PC, you basically handed your entire CPU and memory over to it and your new Ferrari-esque machine now ran like a rusty Ford Cortina with no oil in the engine. Clipart... Wordart... fuck me any of the Microsoft 'Art' tools... and on that note... ...That fucking Office Paperclip that tried to give you useless advice like brushing your teeth and drinking coffee while doing your work. RM Computers found in every school including yours... totally unusable budget computers with specs so low, you couldn't run Word and Paint at the same time. Yet like some rabid spreading bacteria they were somehow everywhere, in every fucking school, in every fucking city.

GameSpy Arcade, that place was basically the best chatroom on the internet, no holds barred, and you could even hop into Battlefield or CoD or whatever to settle the debate once & for all afterwards!
Teamspeak, came in very handy for letting you gob off at the person you just 'pwned' in BF1942/CoD/etc...
WinRAR, is there anyone anywhere on Earth that actually paid for it?

Limewire and Frostwire were always crapshoots when downloading something. Talk about risky! Brother used to use Kazaa a lot. I remember having a Packard Bell system with Win 98se when I was really young, Winamp was a staple of playing music. Worth it for the visualisation effects alone. PSU blew up, and thus the system died entirely. Rapidshare and Megaupload were a godsend for the Warez scene, so many games. Nowadays I use repack sites, and no slow 200 kb/s download speed limits . Nice to see MEGA is still operating under a very, very slight rebrand. Still use it from time to time. My memory of anti-virus always starts with McAfee. Utter shite. Of course, young me didn't have a clue about it. Looking back and comparing it to what I run now, huge difference. And yes, RM Computers. I've experienced them in primary school and high school. And don't forget having an SGFL email.

Never a big gamer, but for a brief period when College wasn't particularly taxing on my time, I got into the original Call of Duty and Teamspeak was the tool of many arguments. Still use WinRAR to this day, and it still pops up with that very same message and no, I still haven't paid for it. Unfortunately, I wasn't a teen in the late 90's and early 00's, much, much younger. Full of dodgy virus', most of which were basically jokes or adware but some that basically guaranteed the death of your machine. I wasn't going to go as far as reminding us all just how bad those early Window's versions were. I used Windows 3.1, 95, 98 and ME and they were all shite.... the jump to Windows XP was the jump to true modern computing... like going from old to new. A lot of Windows XP's functionality is ever present in modern Windows. Winamp. Great shout. I remember it and it's very primitive streaming services (shoutcast was it?) which back then were actually brilliant all things considered. Windows Media Player was (and still is) basically unusable back then and Winamp was the answer. I only ever had McAfee on a really old Gateway 2000 Pentium 2 computer. Dog shit, absolutely. I think Norton, McAfee and Sophos were the big ones back then and they were all absolute arse gravy.

Agree with most of that though 👍🏻 Yes mate All started when I booted a really old laptop earlier today. Surprised it started to be honest... upon Windows loading I was greeted with the Live Messenger popup and it just reminded me what a cracking piece of software that was. A reminder of what we've lost

IraqiGoals. Mid 00's it was the best* place to watch football.
*Best is a stretch as it was basically 240p & lagged for ten seconds every five seconds.

It was a bugger for albums with fake tracks. Never got the album you wanted. I’d argue 98se was one of the best. Original 98 was shite because of its lack of usb 2.0 support, when SE came with that it was a godsend. And was fairly quick on a load of systems. XP was a huge step up though, but if like me you had 64mb of ram to run it, forget it ShoutCast is still going, but doesn’t look like it has any real affiliation with the Winamp team anymore. They’re making a new version of winamp actually. Real player was also one I remember using a fair bit as well. Thank the heavens for faster internet and an open market on antivirus software.

I have spent most of my working life repairing RM computers and their warranty side of things was superb until they decided to stop producing hardware around 2010! There are still plenty kicking around and even though the specs were poor the biggest issue was the RM software installed on them! It really was shite and one thing I noticed was those same RM pc's are still running to this day day with Windows 10 and generally better than when they had RM connect installed! I also found Norton anti virus OK, the main problem was most folk would install it nit knowing they had some other anti virus running in the background which would make things run dog slow! Limewire I used it a lot over the years and had very few issues, found it great for downloading music👍

I guess when I left school they were probably running Pentium 3s or early P4s Speaking of which..... The Pentium 4... Intel's attempt at making a computer processor that runs hotter than the sun. I definitely did not have Norton running with another but it was just a big piece of software and most budget friendly PCs had limited resources. Did anyone give Windows Vista a try? Definitely one of Microsoft's lower moments. I went from XP to 7 but my old man persevered with Vista for a while...

Dont discount the Saturn and Dreamcast. Saturn was the home of the 2D fighter and 2D games overall. 3D was a disappointment for the most thanks to its use of Quadrilaterals, but Panzer Dragoon and Nights really stand out. Dreamcast was the first real internet ready console with near pixel perfect arcade conversions, and home to the 2 of the best sonic games (IMO) of all time.

Fucking youngsters What was wrong with the BBC Micro, ZXs, Commodore and the king Atari 2600 I had a Dragon 32. It was basically a keyboard connected to the TV with the occasional opportunity to play ‘Hi Lo’. It was a bit like ‘Play your cards right’ but without the cards.
