So, who gets to decide what gets "cancelled" on what channels and at what time and what is deemed suitable for "cancellation"?
And how do we know that people are happy with that, from both sides ie those who aren't happy with the lack of offensive material and consider comedy sterile and no-one is funny or allowed to laugh for fear of reprisals, and from the other side who think there are too many offensive gags?
To be fair, the way it's done now is that OFCOM set the times and they consult the public twice yearly about them being happy with it.
Last figures showed 75% of the public surveyed being happy with the current 9pm watershed rules (and it's not a free for all as soon as it hits 9pm. Channels still have to leave material that may be deemed "most offensive" until later in the evening).
They are already standard rules set out, it's not as if it's some hypothetical that no-one can answer because it's some new fangled concept.
So there you go, the regulator sets the rules and they know people are (broadly) happy with the rules as they consult the public twice yearly to check with them that they are.

Exactly so. And those rules probably reflect where the middle ground that most of us occupy is to be found.
Some folk will want any "offensive stuff" on and leave it up to the viewer to decide what's fit to watch or not, others will whine about anything remotely risque.
Both as bad and as unrealistic as each other, if you ask me. Daft hyperbole on both sides.
Justin Thomas, one of the world's leading golfers, has had his sponsorship deal with Ralph Lauren terminated after he uttered the gay slur "faggot" when he missed a short putt, citing that his language was "entirely inconsistent with our values."
I'm sure Thomas won't be short of offers in the very near future and he'll probably look a whole lot better in Adidas, Nike and Under Armour than RL on the course, but maybe RL should take a look at themselves before they start dishing out their advice on values. Their clothing is made in countries like Bangladesh, Eqypt and Indonesia where homosexuality is illegal and if convicted is subject to imprisonment, fines and physical punishment.

This is becoming absolutely fucking absurd isn't it?
Most gays I know would be equally as disgusted at such censorship.
If 2020 was the year of crazed Covid lockdowns then 2021 is the year the West lost the plot even further and implemented mass censorship.

Hey, you leave those big multi million/billion dollar companies alone!
They're providing work to those people!
Imagine where we'd all be without their greed! We'd have no employment!
No, because mass censorship isn't actually happening...
Well it definitely is, as we've all pretty much established and agreed on here 😊
Not sure we have!
Those who over react a bit about the "woke" agenda might think so, hence comments about no-one being funny or allowed to find anything funny for fear of reprisals. Similarly, those who over react and take offence at the slightest thing are the flipside of the same coin.
Meanwhile, in between the two extremes, the vast majority of us muddle through, observing and responding to the changes in society that have always happened and will continue to happen, and by and large taking them on board.

A lot of what’s happening isn’t life changing but it’s setting a presitent and not in a positive way. Why not look forwards rather than back and want to change everything. It’ll be only fools and horses next. Without doubt the finest British comedy and one from when times were better and where people had a smile on there face because things were a lot simpler and everything wasn’t being challenged.

Precedent. Auto-correct being annoying again!
Society is moving forwards, just not in the way that some folk want to see it move. My take on that would be that these are the ones I was referring to who tend to over react to the whole woke agenda thing.
It's interesting that you want everyone to look forward rather than backwards, then cite a comedy from 30-40 years ago as the time you are most comfortable with. I think that's the crux of the matter, society and its ethics move on and some people get stuck where they feel most at home, get left behind and don't like it.

Let's not forget this scandalous episode from the Twitter elites. Allowing the former Malaysian PM to retain his account after posting actual hate speech demanding the massacre of millions of innocent French people, while banning the US President for calling for a "peaceful" protest on the Capitol. The Twitter elites are becoming beyond comical with their actions and horrifyingly political.

Only fools and horses Faulty Towers Auf Wiedersehn pet Porridge Steptoe and Son Phoenix nights The office Alan Partridge The list goes on. Name me a better present comedy?
Moving forwards? Stabbings on a daily basis, 12 year olds murdering other 12 year olds. A country where more attention is given to the killing of a career criminal in the US than 3 innocent people murdered in the U.K. I’m happy being one of the “some folk” as you put it.

Yeah completely. The way that the entirety of the British media, corporate elites along with the vast majority of young, white, middle class kids in London sipping their soy lattes have spent months on end self flaggelating and focusing on a murder thousands of miles away (of a convicted criminal who is said to have once held a pregnant lady at gunpoint) over three, decent, white, British gay lads having their throats cut with a machete while having a cup of tea in a park - It's easily one of the most disgusting reflections of woke Modern Britain.

It’s laughable yet if you dare to question the morals behind it your instantly accused of being some thick, racist bigot by the usual suspects.

The trend seems to be that if the perpertrators aren't white, the incidents and victims aren't allotted the same degree of consideration and soul-searching. Weren't the three poor guys in Reading gay? If their murderer had been white no doubt it would have been "Brexit Britain going to hell in a handcart" but as it wasn't...the sound of silence. Still, if you're sitting in a park you're more likely to be killed by a Neo Nazi apparently 🤷♀️ See also the Birmingham school protests last year.
Going back to censorship, it's 100% right that names such as the dog in Dambusters are cut out or edited, that's common sense in this day and age as the name's offensive. But to remove whole series? Worrying.

You got it.
Only in 2021 could you create a society where a certain race and status grows to resent itself, self flaggelating en mass. It would be funny if it didn't involve a sinister, dangerous, identity politics driven agenda. The biggest irony of all being that the people who end up suffering are the minorities said group are professing to protect.

Culturally people tend to gravitate to things from their youth. It's the same with music, and why revival nights were so popular pre-Covid: scooter/ska rallies, Northern Soul (which is older people appreciating black music made overseas, shock horror 😲) and Golden nights to name three examples.
In my prime, there was no drill rap with lyrics about gang wars and county lines drug dealing, the worst we had was people singing about being a bit high and loving everyone 😊

"I think that's the crux of the matter, society and its ethics move on and some people get stuck where they feel most at home, get left behind and don't like it."
Honestly, you sound like a bunch of ranting old fogies nursing a half of mild down the boozer, conflating all sorts of issues - race, stabbings, Brexit, the "woke" agenda, cancel culture, bigotry etc!
"Tell you what, they used to collect the bins every bleedin week when I was a lad too...!
Perhaps in 60 years time people will be complaining that there aren't enough Martians on TV, that Sigourney Weaver was a vile xenomorph-hating racist and demanding that plant-based food is banned as they eat their meals that come in cube form 😄

Bah, grrrr, back in my day, when I were a lad all this were green fields, and you could give the missus a good clout if she were uppity and the coppers would hold your jacket for you while you were about it...the world's gone mad...

Well it is a discussion forum and if people are using this site to discuss news/politics from the US and other parts of the world, it shouldn't be much of a shock if we're discussing things happening closer to home. There's not much else to do right now!
Aren't you a regular contributor to threads dedicated to many of the subjects you listed in your last post- including race, Brexit and this one to name three? 😆
I don't see anyone ranting to be honest, I think you've just seen some posts from people you disagree with and assumed that's the case!
Oh, and I'd rather go teetotal than drink mild. Belgian/Czech beer any day over that muck 😎

Yeah, ok
What was a thread about cancel culture suddenly took a turn into ramblings about stabbings, Brexit, bigotry, lack of interest in white victims, kids killing kids, "soy latte-drinking London elites" , not a bunch of old men ranting at all!

The only one who seems to be ranting is you fella. And I'm certainly not going down another rabbit hole with you, it's a waste of time and there's four games on back to back.

I’d say it’s more about having your own mind and have the balls to disagree if you don’t think things are moving in the right direction. You might call it progress just because it’s happening now doesn’t mean it’s better. Just means that it’s a different time.

You try and enjoy your day mate 👍
Ranting, yes, hence all the laughing faces
To be honest, I'm glad you've managed to shed the Angry Frank persona and all the name-calling and abuse. That's definitely progress.

You were obviously happier 30-40 years ago when "Only Fools and Horses was on and times were better and where people had a smile on there face because things were a lot simpler and everything wasn’t being challenged."
Entirely fair enough. Your choice to disagree with how you think things are going.

I'm not sure being challenged to see if your child should undergo genital mutilation or sending children to racism de-radicalisation camps is a healthy place to be but hey 😂
