He still has quality, but his energy and batteries are fading. What is the issue is not so much Mikel, but the fact that he’s not be used correctly. Give him 60 minutes and then sub him when he starts to fade and before he becomes a passenger and a hazard. He doesn't just fade after 60 mins though, his general play is sloppy and slow. He's a liability.

Ironic that Watford's Will Hughes has said that Mikel was the one making it a very difficult first half for Watford. They had to change their pressing pattern in the second half in order to overcome his influence. Maybe other players see things fans don't understand? Indeed. Andy Hinchcliffe declared on commentary that we played a back three with Jack Clarke and James McClean as wingbacks, when we clearly played with a back four. I certainly didn't understand that. Maybe I should just ignore my eyes and let the ex professional think for me? Lack of understanding should not close your mind to enlightenment

Mikel did ok in the first half, dropping deep to pick up the ball from the defenders, but he lacks the energy and drive we need in central midfield.
Cousins and Thompson will never be in the same class as Mikel, but I'd play them with two wide men in a 4 man midfield.

I was puzzled by the signing and he’s done nothing to change that view

He is just slow, and used to possession football where you have time on the ball
The Champ just doesnt give you that luxury, oppo players are at you like terriers
He seems a good sort, but not sure he is our answer - I would rather see 4231 as plenty have discussed
I think Chester gets caught out by a through ball too often
Had no issues with Clucas or Allen last night bar end product, both could/should have scored but both coming back from injury
We looked a different side with forwards on
Clarke looks a talent, but obvs struggled fitness 2nd half having not started any game since early 2019!
McClean is all effort but no quality. He must know the Doughty signing is time to move on
Davies (Bursik/Gunn are fine alternatives)
Collins Souttar CH (ideally Ryan if fit) Nozza
Allen Clucas
Clarke Powell Winger (take your pick, we have 300)
Fletcher
Be interesting next season when Tye is back how we setup, and a speedy winger on the other side - got to get Powell in the box for headers all the time

Watching him chase shadows and get near nobody last night was almost sad to watch. Cousins needs to come back in, at least he can actually get around the opposition.

His lead boots jumping for headers defensively also give me kittens
