Playing for Chorley against Derby at the moment.
We had such big hopes for him!

Well he at least played in a headlining FA Cup game this season. And I expect he'll be on MOTD before us. Good luck Ollie.

One of my LadsanDads players for 5 seasons is on the bench for them too (Oli Putnam (19))
Was top scorer for me 3 seasons running, including 6 in a cup final against our fierce local rivals in a 7-1 win!
Went off to Castle Town after we finished, picked up by Chorley
Hope he gets on the pitch - Chorley currently 1-0 up v Derby!

The margins between making it big and playing at a level like Chorley must be so fine. Luck surely has a massive part to play.

Looks like it'll be plain ordinary Derby today. Unless they surprisingly win and resurrect themselves as "Wayne Rooney's Derby" once more, to ecstatic media acclaim.

Deffo some element of right place, right time, but would add that he was also determined to play football for a career, worked his nads off Probs just great coaching 😂😂😂🙈 I've known Ad Porter most of his life too (he played briefly for me before Stoke took him, went to school with my lad - is a really bright kid as well as good with a ball!) and good mates with his mum and dad since our schooldays - the work he put in daily and the sacrifices he made in his free time after school - rushing to training every day, travelling all over to play matches, not able to play with mates, got stopped playing cricket for me too at Knype - its a lot for the kids and parents to cope with and takes tremendous dedication with no guarantee of a contract at the end. If there was a preferable path its Olis, able to live his life, enjoy his football, and if they are good enough they will make it either way Couple of my lads were picked up and spat out by academies, I find the system little more than a cattle market to unearth the odd gem. Everyone else is used and discarded. But there is deffo some luck involved in when/where/how you get spotted, and coaches who believe in you.

WRD are isolating so these are somebody else's Derby U23's. Not sure who would be the favourites but first half Chorley looked like men v boys. Just proving how important loans are for learning to cope with the physical side of the game. Shenton wasn't involved much in the first half and certainly doesn't look like a player who should be playing at a higher level.

Luck and very often 1 persons opinion at a key stage. Like the Glentoran coach who showed a young George Best the door for being "too small and light"! Lots of kids suffer that one. Liverpool, in trying to encourage kids/parents to sign for them, use the Gerrard story. He missed out on youth international honours coz he was too small. When he saw his mates go on international duty, he'd be gutted to be left behind but went in to do individual work with a youth coach who had ultimate faith in him. Then Houllier saw him and had the same belief in him that this particular youth coach did. The rest is history.
