Just watching that great film, all I'm thinking is " we all hate leeds". And what a shame it's been edited so the dog doesn't have a name, political correctness gone mad.

One of the Dam Busters, Douglas Webb, took the photos for the iconic opening and end credits of The Sweeney. A remarkable man, as were many of his generation. Douglas Webb

^ I can agree on most things where PC seems to be running amuck, but not sure the dog's name was important to the movie as I recall, so this seems a non-issue. The reason I say this is I coincidentally just finished watching "The Killing" a Kubrick film, where the "n" word is used. Could Kubrick have use a different word? I suppose, but I don't think it would have gotten the correct reaction since the character speaking it (acting regrettably) needed the end result of saying it.

Aside from all this canine business, can we all agree that using two spot lights converging on the water's surface for proper drop altitude is a damn elegant solution to their altimeter problem?

It’s fair to say, I think, that the name of a dog is of no great significance to the significance of the dambusters.

Still no news on the possible re make of this. Reports suggest it is in the hands of Peter Jackson which fills me with confidence with his background and “They shall not grow old”.
With CGI I reckon it could be fantastic.
All he has to do is keep it out of the hands of the Yanks or the Lancasters become Flying Fortreses, Barnes Wallis someone from NASA and Guy Gibson turns into Tom Cruise flanked by F35s armed with laser beams.

Frankly, there's more risk of him putting Orlando Bloom in it leaping around shooting arrows.

Agreed fantastic film and I’d be up for a remake, recall reading somewhere that the actual mission itself had very little affect on the war ??

The only significance of dogs in war films was usually just like those soon to be married it usually guarenteed they never made it to the end of the film but yeah the dogs name is about as relevant to the overall story as the football team he supported or his favourite drink.

One of those military ventures that enjoys prominence in the collective psyche,a byword for ingenuity, moral and physical courage and steely pragmatism.
"Can you deliver the bomb from 60 feet, (under intense fire and darkness of night?")
"We'll give it a go..."
A light hearted take on the story that shows its cultural penetration:
Not the dambusters, but someone posted this on a thread a good while back,an awe inspiring historical testimony to a fine generation:
