The queues at Dover should cause us to question if we really need to import so much food, particularly out of season. The same question could be asked about other commodities

Until such time we can grow things like macadamia nuts and various other exotic ingredients we'll have to carry on otherwise I'd be out of a job. 🤔

I wonder if we need to move away from meat We don't need to move away from meat, but we will be told we need to in the coming years. Want a nice steak? No, no, only the rich & powerful can eat food like that, you'll make do with your insect burger & be greatful.

I just recall reading somewhere a long time ago that too much arable land is given over to producing animal foodstuffs....whatever that means. Is the meat production too intensive for animal welfare? I don't understand why we don't eat more fish, bring an island nation. I'm not against eating meat

Sounded right rank ( just watching to pick up a few tips.......honest) 😁 Loved the bit where she made an analogy between her jammy dodgers and Michelangelo’s David....... . We’ve decided that “I’m feeling fabulously festive!” Is the catchphrase for this Christmas in our house.

It just seems to me that we almost expect everything to be available all the year round eg strawberries and raspberries available at Christmas....do we need to import such a range?

We will need to change our diet towards a more vegetable based food intake. There are parts of the country where cattle and sheep rearing is the only way of making a living because of poor soil, steep terrain etc. At the other end of the scale, I recall returning from Shrewsbury to Stockport on the train and passing field after field of maize, which is used as cattle feed. Maize is a greedy crop and impoverishes the soil very quickly unless heavily fertilised on a regular basis. This land could be used to produce potatoes and other vegetable crops which, admittedly need fertiliser but would produce a lot more food per acre. The old idea of crop rotation has merit when land is put down to grass in the rotational cycle and cattle grazing helps to restore the soil in a more natural way. For those interested, it is worth visiting Fordhall Farm near Market Drayton where the Hollins family maintain a productive farm using organic methods. If you have a small garden you could plant a fruit tree or some raspberries or strawberries for your own consumption, I have an apple tree in my small back garden which produced over 50 kg. of fruit which I have used/stored/given away to neighbours etc. The issue of flying in beans/asparagus/strawberries etc out of season is another matter. very expensive in terms of food miles and carbon emissions, but provides a livelihood for people in developing countries.
