Since the "war on terror" started terrorism has increased 10 fold, both parties are weak on terror, both parities gave up on the "war on terror" a long time ago and decided to embark on silly wars against countries who haven't attacked us, never threatened to attack us and posed no threat what so ever to us.
If the terrorists aim was to "change our way of life", which the governments claims was the terrorists aim, then they have succeeded with the help of the government, ... 42 day detention without charge, ID cards, CCTV capital of the world, etc etc etc ... welcome to ex Great Britain.
As much as i hate to say this, at least the Tories (bar a few notable exceptions, the odious Anne Widecombe) are standing up to the Orwellian ID card scheme and this stupid and dangerous 42 day detention law.

My point is Serpico that they are doing it for oppurtunist reasons only and not for any principled reason .... After all I don't recall the Tories being too upset when Internment was used in the North of Ireland

Fuck me, you just knew Serps would turn the argument into a “we only attack countries who pose no threat like Iceland and Belgium” debate.
As for the Orwellian ID card scheme that everyone seems so apposed to because it invades their privacy, maybe Labour should rename it “The Facebook” Card Scheme and there will probably be millions of people who will get on board and make their details available.

Fuckin Hell - I agree with JPM!
I can't see any reason why the 42 day limit shouldn't be introduced unless it's the tip of the iceberg and we'll suddenly find ourselves awash with new draconian laws.
All we need now is for the 42 day detention to be made law, anybody connected with the Labour government for the last 11 years to be labelled a terrorist and a danger to the people of the UK, and then fucked off to a Guantanamo Bay-esque institution near Rhyl.
Let's punish the real culprits who've made this country the bag of wank it is today.

To be fair I've no idea why Davis has done this as he's already made his views clear on 42 day detention. There was a vote, he lost, get over it.
His constituency won't vote for him purely on the basis of the 42 day stuff so it's a total waste of tax payers money but...
He should be more upset about the many millions we're probably going to give the DUP as a sweetener to vote with the government.
Now that is government gone wrong!

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." You trust the government with all your personal information ? even in light of the latest blunder with regards important data ?.... al qeada documents left on train ? ..... or earlier in the year when everyones child benefit information went missing due to the incredibly incompetent government ? fuck the government, fuck each and every last one of them, they can stick there ID cards up there arses.

There’s not much we can do about the government losing vital information. I agree with you that they are an incompetent bunch of fuckwits.
That said, I am not against ID cards.

Serpico Why are you worried about the AQ documents ? According to your past ramblings they pose no threat to us anyway Nope...... never have i ever said that al qeada isn't a threat to us. And I'm not to concerned about them going missing, i just wanted to illustrate how utterly incompetent the government is.

i think i would prefer to be microchipped rather than carry a card.
cons- the government would know when i was taking a shit
pros- i wouldn't have to pay a £15 "administration charge" when i lost my id card

So you except that the government is utterly incompetent, even with the most highly important infomation, but you're still willing to hand over all of your personal and private details to them ?

Serpico, the information I would give them is not that important.
It’s D.O.B, Name, place of birth, address, photograph, nationality, NI number etc. It’s not like I’m handing over all my research into my personal program to build WMD’s FFS.

Just don't forget that laws bought in as part of previous anti-terror legislation upgrade are now being used by local councils to snoop on Al Queda cells they suspect of putting too much rubbish in bins / not recycling and trying to get their children into schools they're not eligible for ;D

Thomas...once again, I find myself agreeing with you. How can this be...a PHW agrees with a Pulista. I'm now off to Berlin for a few days where I hope to set up a cell for PHW's. Angela Tubby Fucking Merkel has expressed a view that she wants in. I shall exact a big slice of European dosh towards the renovation of The Brit as part pay off. It will, as is the norm with rich-bastard-tories-on-the-gravy-train, be included in my expenses as legitimate...probably to pay my nanny. BTW, Davies is off his fuckin' rocker. Labour should withdraw along with the Lib Dems and made him look a real plonker. OS.

every year the government tries to extend the detention limit. They will slowly creep towards their original 90 days they asked for way back. Called getting legislation in through the back door.

I have nothing to add to this debate, other than i wish New Labour would stop messing about and just take a massive dump on the Magna Carta.
David Davies has done this because he wants the matter kept in the public conciousness, not because he seriously thinks he is going to lose his seat. Nonetheless i applaud him for it and his attempt to discuss just how invasive this legislation could be, not to mention the opportunity we have to scrutinise our beloved leader's claim that no deals were done with the DUP (yeah, fucking right).
In a day and age when politicians are quite happy to throw their political beliefs to one side in a bod to garner power, i find it refreshing that a man is prepared to possibly consign himself to the back benches in order to make a point.
