www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/55214584The player gets booked for scoring slowly! I don't get this, surely if the defenders would have got to him quicker he would have put the ball in the net sooner?

Nothing.
Pathetic, weird reaction.

Utterly bizarre! Is showboating against the rules?

I guess the referee decided it was unsporting behaviour.
Bit harsh.
But he was taking the piss.

Weird. Lucky that ref wasn't the ref when our John Ritchie stopped the ball on the line against Southampton and dropped to his knees and headed the ball over the line as a dig at Peter Osgood who he had a running argument with.
I suppose it comes under unsporting conduct but it looks more like a sense of humour failure by both the opponents and the ref.

I guess the referee decided it was unsporting behaviour. Bit harsh. But he was taking the piss. It was at the end of the game. What's wrong with running the clock down as much as possible? It's no different to than when a keeper doesn't pick the ball up until the striker reaches him.

Perhaps he was worried that the player had bought a golden goal ticket and was trying to rig the time of the goal?

Absurd decision by the ref.

Could we set up a competition between him and Gregory to see who needs the longest to take up a goal scoring opportunity?

I remember John Ritchie finishing off his hat-trick by trapping the ball on the line before kneeling down to head it over the line after Osgood had said he could only score with his head, his first 2 were a left footer and a right footer if i recall correctly.

So does that mean that player's should be booked for taking the ball into the corner and holding on to it to waste time too?
Isn't knocking a ball through someone's legs taking the piss?
I don't get it, the player is entitled to take as long as they want as ball is in play, it is up the defender's to stop him surely?

This player had clearly been trained to wait for support in attack from team mates, and not take risks on his own.

Stupide decision, ref needs a ban and a jot of training, the opposition should have tried to get the ball back quicker

Live ball, up to the defenders to get to it. You can only time waste in a dead ball situation IMO. And I agree should be the refs last game for a good while.

Why would you want to lamp him? I don’t get it. Did you ever play football? If you did, you get it. If I was playing for the green shirts (having played a bit of competitive football in my time) the only ones I would want to lamp would be my defender and the goalie, what a mess, the attacker is entitled to do what he wants, its not his problem. Terrible reffing that.

If the ref had really wanted to punish the player he should have blown for time a second before the ball crossed the line!

Hasn’t broken any rules. Unsporting or not. Unsporting behaviour in this case is to subjective. Bad decision. Anyone who says they would lamp him if he was playing on the opposite side, then they should be sent off for being a prick. And yes I have played football.
