Ramipril is what I’m taking. I’ve not from my GP yet regarding a sleep analysis, hopefully next week and will know more after. Thanks for your good wishes👍🏻 They range from 2.5mg up to 10mg and I’ve always took mine last thing at night I’m taking 5mg, why do you take them at night out of interest? Drowsiness?

I was told to by the doctors at the time but I also know a few people that couldn’t get on with Ramipril to start with due to dizziness but fortunately I’ve never had that

Been a high blood pressure suffer foe about 20 years, go twice a year one for just a pressure check then one for a mini medical blood test weight and so on, once or twice a bit in the high side had to go back a week later for a recheck but in general okay, so now they won't do it, and told me to get a home test one, now for want of a better word I was have and possibly still am a bit of a hypochondriac, so purchased a decent, according to reviews a decent checker and have to say I did 4 tests in the space of a few minutes just before I rang the ambulance and all 4 were so far apart it was unreal, one red not great then yellow in between then red again then normal so what the fuck?
Have been really over weight in the past and still am but not greatly play 5 a side twice a week and power walk most days from 3 to 5 miles so I don't know what to think!

Hope you’re on the mend soon and feeling better. You’re one of the good guys on here mate. I learnt a lesson a couple of years ago when I had an over 40’s health check (at 48) and it was the best thing I ever did. Though the readings weren’t as worrying as yours. I was bordering on diabetic. 2 years later and nearly 4 stone lighter and my readings were hugely improved. Thankfully I don’t drink and it was fast food that was my downfall. I joined slimming world and a gym and that made a huge difference. The weird thing is when you keep getting complimented about your weight loss the buzz you get from it outweighs any Chinese takeaway. It’s never to late to change your lifestyle and it’s a great adventure doing so. Ahhhh! What a great thing to say about Badge (and yes, he is). I always love your posts, Cobs, and always seem to agree with everything you say on all subjects (honestly, no messing!) Do you remember the wonderful Mares (ID: Marysbeanflicker) who used to post on here until about 12 months ago? I miss him like hell, incidentally…. ( COME BACK, MARES.) Mares had a very similar 'about-change' to yourself with his diet. It's such a pity he's no longer posting, because he turned out to be incredibly knowledgeable about diet/health/fitness, etc., and I'm sure he would have been able to contribute very wisely to a thread such as this. Anyway, what you've said in your post about fast food is fantastic advice for a lot of young/middly guys who perhaps know full well in the back of their minds that they really need to cut down on burgers & fast food & start to eat more healthily but keep putting it off. This means especially cutting right back on meat, especially red meat, and instead start eating more vegetables and fruit. Cheers Murph very kind of you to say. I may be one of the gang but I try to say it how I see it right or wrong.

You’re supposed to take them before you go to bed because they are much more effective during sleep; same with statins. I think it’s assumed you’re not going to indulge in a shagathon after taking them, cos that would be counter-productive 😊

It also didn’t say on the leaflet. Anyway I’ve just done a bit of reading on it and will change to evenings.👍🏻

So yesterday morning I decided to check my blood pressure at home and I was astonished at the results. It was at Hypertension Crisis level which for folk who don’t know means you are on the verge of a heart attack or stroke. Called the GP and due to the pandemic had to wait 6 hours for a call back from a doctor who advised me to immediately go to Bradwell hospital where they checked again and my blood pressure had increased further. I was sent immediately to A&E. They tested another 4 times, each time the blood pressure had gone up slightly, had to have blood tests, urine sample, ECG, Chest X Ray. I was then given several tablets at 1 hour intervals to try and bring my blood pressure down to no avail. I was eventually sent home and asked to go back this morning for further tests and more pills(not been yet), just about to pick up a prescription. I now have to give up all alcohol all together, go on a special diet of boring food and lose weight whilst taking pills for life. The point in all this is I thought I was a relatively healthy 40 year old with the usual odd bad habits (too much beer, naughty foods, not exercising as much as I should). It was only by chance that my Mrs has been checking blood pressure due to hers being low that I thought I’d check. So I’d urge anybody who doesn’t get checked regularly to invest in a home testing monitor, not sure how much they cost but can’t imagine they’re too expensive (I’ll let you know when I order one later). Anyway stay safe and stay healthy all and do me a favour Stoke, next time I’m in hospital can we have the usual dull nil nil please😀 Cheers for the heads up!! How did you test it mate?

I went through very similar, where I wasn’t allowed out the surgery “in case I keeled over and died”. Anyway, a few years later, my own CPAP machine and two heavy duty pills a day and the BP is under control.
Point if the post matey is to say preserve with the cpap, it is an absolute bugger to get used to but you will do so. It just takes a fair time - try watching TV with it on at first, to get used to it. That might help you relax a bit once you are in the dark with it and your negative thoughts.
Good luck and don’t give up

Good luck and don’t give up I guess it depends. I thought it would be difficult as well getting used to the CPAP, but it turned out not to be. Mine is over the nose only so maybe that's an easier mask, fell asleep very easily first night and since then as well. I do laugh at my nightly ritual though: night guard (check), CPAP (check) and white noise machine (check) with the occasional melotonin or ZZZquil dose taken beforehand.

I should have gone for a follow up cholesterol check after the first one indicated I was at risk of a heart attack, stupidly it’s 11 months overdue

Well I’ve still not managed to get a GP appointment, I mean what else are they doing🤷🏻♂️ I’ve not had a drink, cut out salt, sugar(apart from brews) and started a moderate fitness regime. Latest BP is 162/116 so although extremely high it’s a lot less than the 234/145 or whatever it was last Wednesday so things progressing well. Hopefully will be able to get the sleep analysis done ASAP.

Had a Heart Attack 1/6/19 - 100% Blockage in the Main Artery, nearly didn't make it in the ambulance. Before that I didn't WANT to know my numbers, even blew off a work-based Health Screening 2 weeks prior. I use a CPAP since the heart attack - Best sleep you'll ever get. 6 hours on a CPAP = 9 or 10 hours without it for me. Also found out I was Type 2 Diabetic - Since controlled with medication Blood pressure was something like 435/220 when I had the attack, so I nearly had a stroke. (Since controlled so well by pills that they just reduced my dose) My BP runs about 140-150 over 80 now. Started exercising moderately, lost some weight, sleeping better, quit adding salt to my food (for the BP) and quit eating sugar like it's going out of style. I learned that the crazy diets are the easiest to quit. Just eat in moderation, cut down the portions and try to get as much veg as you can. If you screw up and eat something volatile, just go out and walk it off. Drinking? I will go to my grave drinking. I agree with Compo Seminite on that (When he was told about a guy who didn't drink) He asked "Well what kind of irresponsible attitude is THAT?!" The beer actually thins my blood and lowers my blood sugar due to all the pissing. And my numbers haven't been thrown off by it. Just relieved to hear that you have caught yours early - we need you around here! Hopefully they can get you into that sleep study soon - just getting good rest takes care of a lot of ills. Oh and if they tell you to take a baby aspirin daily - do it. (Also helps thin the blood)

I have to say I’ve not wanted a beer at all since but I get the feeling it will return at some point before Christmas, one things for sure it will be significantly reduced. I’ve not gone on a diet as such, like you say everything in moderation, I’ve just cut out the salt almost completely(never really did much salt anyway), sugar(never into sweet things so that’s easy). I do however struggle to get enough fruit and veg into my diet as there isn’t much I like but I’m trying. Sounds like you’ve done fantastically well to get your health back on track after what must have been a very traumatic period. I’m around 4 stone over my “ideal” weight so the doctor says, if I can get rid of half that I’ll be pretty satisfied but would like to get it all off. As for the CPAP I’d rather not have to use them, I sleep really well as it is but I wouldn’t say I’m worried if I did need to. At the end of the day all these things are there to help get you through life so I’m all for it. Glad you are in decent health and long may it continue for all of us👍🏻

The fruit thing sounds stupid but when I moved in with my now second wife she used to make me take an apple and banana to work but I couldn’t stomach them. Not all working class kids got fruit in the old days!
Anyway, I found that putting them in some natural yogurt helped me adjust to the taste! Really helped.
And I’m 95% vegan now (couldn’t get on with the statins for cholesterol)!

How’s it all going Badge? Noticing a difference yet or is it too early to tell? Well it’s day 11 and still not a drop of booze, balanced diet and plenty of moderate exercise. Already feel about ten years younger, all aches and pains have disappeared and much more awake so great on that front. BP is down to 147/97 as of this morning but got to wait until next month for sleep analysis🙄

Assume that CPAP will improve things even more, but you have already made significant strides. FbrgVaStkFan made mention of the type of mask that just fits over your nose. I'm familiar with the full face mask and a type of mask with little tubes that fit into your nostrils, which are called "nasal pillows" in the US. These will only work if your mouth remains closed and creates a seal while you sleep (nose breather). If you sleep with your mouth open (mouth breather) or have nasal obstructions such as a deviated septum, it will probably not work for you. You can experiment while you wait for the sleep study.....tape your mouth shut and spend time sitting and lying down. If you struggle to breathe and cannot get enough air through your nose, you will probably require the full face mask. Once the sleep study is completed and if sleep apnea is confirmed, the next step is to determine what type of equipment you need. Conducting this simple experiment, will get you a step closer to determining what will work for you.

The Oatcake never fails to deliver😀 I’ve done my best, not easy but certainly easier when you get a shock to the system. Interesting about the different masks. I tend to breathe a lot through my mouth due to not being able to breathe through one of my nostrils, having had my nose obliterated during a bar brawl about 15 years ago! I’ve not really thought about it before🤔
