So the plot thickens. I’ve just got back from the hospital again and my blood pressure had dropped off quite a bit so that was good. However based on the info I’ve given them they think it could probably be caused by sleep apnea, which is when you stop breathing for long periods whilst asleep causing fatigue in the day. So now I’ve got to be put on a sleep apnea machine for a while🙄 Are you scheduled for an overnight sleep study first? That normally comes first.....they need to determine several factors and measurements to set up a CPAP machine for your individual use. I tend to snore due to a deviated septum. Did a sleep study last December......several years ago I had a dodgy sleep study and told I had severe sleep apnea. The December test revealed that I did not have it. And I only snored when lying on my back......no snoring lying on my side. Until you get better clarity, you should do the obvious things like back off the salt, lose weight if you need to and get some moderate exercise. A relatively inexpensive pulse oximeter is a small electronic device to check your oxygen saturation levels and your pulse. I use one as a simple measure to check for COVID......my normal oxygen level is 98%....if it ever drops to around 90% or lower, I'll be getting tested. I've heard of people who have dropped below 50% and are asymptomatic but then they get hit hard with the virus. Best wishes,

My wife had severe sleep apnea for years and despite several visits to the G.P. nothing was done about the problem. It was only when we moved house to a different area and got a new G.P. that she was sent for tests. Up to that point we didn't even know that it was sleep apnea. She was always tired during the day and would frequently fall asleep, and she would go usually over 30 seconds between breaths at her worst at night, then she gulped air in. The tests showed she spent around 80% of the time not breathing during sleep. She was given a CPAP and after a week or so where she initially struggled to get used to trying to sleep with it, her breathing was controlled, her sleeping improved beyond beIef and her general health greatly improved as well. She now only needs to have a check up at the hospital every 2 years where they read the data card out of the CPAP to check her sleep and breathing pattern. It's been fantastic in helping my wife.
Good luck Badger, hope things improve for you !

I snore a lot and very loudly but sleep on my side as much as I can, I have also had instances of stopping breathing when asleep and choking, all very concerning. I’ll take a look at the oximeter machines. Already started the no alcohol, no salt and more exercise and have started a record to log progress etc. Thanks👍🏻

Try Strava or a similar fitness app on your phone, Badger.
If you're like me, you'll find it'll help you walk when you'd normally take the easy option and jump in the car, and keep up a running schedule too once you get into that.
Walking helps you take time to appreciate your surroundings more and allow your mind a bit of time just to chill out.
Good luck with it.

Also don’t forget the old adage:
‘A wank a day keeps the apnea away’
I know it sounds like a lot but I’m sure you’ll be able to cut down...

He did send me straight to hospital. Well about 6 hours after I first contacted them about it. Most consultations are done over the phone during COVID so I literally had to sit their all day waiting for them to tell me what to do. Haven’t you read the original post!!!🤣 Soz pal...Just read the 1st bit. When mine was 186/120 I got told by my company that I needed a cert from the doc saying im okay to drive...He said absolutely not, as DVLA guidelines said a resounding nope. Got put on sick for a month. www.gov.uk/high-blood-pressure-and-drivingNice one it was 177/110 this morning which is obviously still very high but had dropped enough to let me come home

So yesterday morning I decided to check my blood pressure at home and I was astonished at the results. It was at Hypertension Crisis level which for folk who don’t know means you are on the verge of a heart attack or stroke. Called the GP and due to the pandemic had to wait 6 hours for a call back from a doctor who advised me to immediately go to Bradwell hospital where they checked again and my blood pressure had increased further. I was sent immediately to A&E. They tested another 4 times, each time the blood pressure had gone up slightly, had to have blood tests, urine sample, ECG, Chest X Ray. I was then given several tablets at 1 hour intervals to try and bring my blood pressure down to no avail. I was eventually sent home and asked to go back this morning for further tests and more pills(not been yet), just about to pick up a prescription. I now have to give up all alcohol all together, go on a special diet of boring food and lose weight whilst taking pills for life. The point in all this is I thought I was a relatively healthy 40 year old with the usual odd bad habits (too much beer, naughty foods, not exercising as much as I should). It was only by chance that my Mrs has been checking blood pressure due to hers being low that I thought I’d check. So I’d urge anybody who doesn’t get checked regularly to invest in a home testing monitor, not sure how much they cost but can’t imagine they’re too expensive (I’ll let you know when I order one later). Anyway stay safe and stay healthy all and do me a favour Stoke, next time I’m in hospital can we have the usual dull nil nil please😀 40 is a fantastically young age to sort your shit out Badger and there's no such thing as boring food once you train yourself to enjoy it Glad you're sorted with a plan. Good point on the food, just need to be a little more creative. I do cook most food from scratch but it’s not always the healthiest, cutting out salt won’t be a problem at all, it’s trying to find low sodium food and switching to whole grains, nuts and fruit I may struggle a bit with. As for being 40, your thoughts were echoed by the quacks👍🏻

Think I would cry if was told to give up alcohol. I'm amazed anyone can drink alchol at all, since most adults (where I live) take at least 1 or 2 medical drugs each day, some are dependant on as many as 5, 8 or 10 different pills each day. i think my grandmother had 12 or 14 pills at the age of 65. The pharmacist told me, another pill to add for each decade is a good rule, it's a sort of average here in Sweden. And most of these pills can't be combined with alcohol whatsoever. And I don't mean a use of alcohol to swallow it, I mean to use alcohol at all during the day. It goes for not only most of the common drugs, but also for most of the diseases. Alcohol is a big no in many diseases. I don't use alchol nor any medical drugs, which makes me really odd, but I've thought about trying alcohol to some extent since new research shows it can be protective against ALS (which coffee also can), and I don't drink coffee. Any good gluten free beers out there?

Stopping breathing and choking are classic symptoms, as is the daytime fatigue also mentioned in another post. Until you get all of this sorted out, I'd suggest that you buy some kind of a dense foam wedge and place it under your back in such a way to prevent you from rolling onto your back. When you fall asleep on your back, the muscles in your throat relax and your tongue tends to block your air passageway. It doesn't do this (or much less so) when you lie on your side. This is a simple mechanical solution and if it helps, you will have useful information to share with your doctor.

Thanks and yes this is all info my doctor told me. It’s weird, I go to sleep on my side and wake up on my side, yet the Mrs says I’m always on my back in the night. I generally have good sleep and don’t really feel fatigued the following day that I’ve noticed🤷🏻♂️ Anyway just waiting for my GP to call to arrange a sleep study.

You’re one of the good guys on here mate. I learnt a lesson a couple of years ago when I had an over 40’s health check (at 48) and it was the best thing I ever did. Though the readings weren’t as worrying as yours. I was bordering on diabetic. 2 years later and nearly 4 stone lighter and my readings were hugely improved. Thankfully I don’t drink and it was fast food that was my downfall. I joined slimming world and a gym and that made a huge difference. The weird thing is when you keep getting complimented about your weight loss the buzz you get from it outweighs any Chinese takeaway. It’s never to late to change your lifestyle and it’s a great adventure doing so.

I always love your posts, Cobs, and always seem to agree with everything you say on all subjects (honestly, no messing!) Do you remember the wonderful Mares (ID: Marysbeanflicker) who used to post on here until about 12 months ago? I miss him like hell, incidentally…. ( COME BACK, MARES.) Mares had a very similar 'about-change' to yourself with his diet. It's such a pity he's no longer posting, because he turned out to be incredibly knowledgeable about diet/health/fitness, etc., and I'm sure he would have been able to contribute very wisely to a thread such as this. Anyway, what you've said in your post about fast food is fantastic advice for a lot of young/middly guys who perhaps know full well in the back of their minds that they really need to cut down on burgers & fast food & start to eat more healthily but keep putting it off. This means especially cutting right back on meat, especially red meat, and instead start eating more vegetables and fruit.

I know a lot of lads I used to work with that were as fit as a fiddle and still on B/P tablets so it’s not just about being overweight although obviously that doesn’t help
