So yesterday morning I decided to check my blood pressure at home and I was astonished at the results. It was at Hypertension Crisis level which for folk who don’t know means you are on the verge of a heart attack or stroke. Called the GP and due to the pandemic had to wait 6 hours for a call back from a doctor who advised me to immediately go to Bradwell hospital where they checked again and my blood pressure had increased further. I was sent immediately to A&E. They tested another 4 times, each time the blood pressure had gone up slightly, had to have blood tests, urine sample, ECG, Chest X Ray. I was then given several tablets at 1 hour intervals to try and bring my blood pressure down to no avail. I was eventually sent home and asked to go back this morning for further tests and more pills(not been yet), just about to pick up a prescription. I now have to give up all alcohol all together, go on a special diet of boring food and lose weight whilst taking pills for life. The point in all this is I thought I was a relatively healthy 40 year old with the usual odd bad habits (too much beer, naughty foods, not exercising as much as I should). It was only by chance that my Mrs has been checking blood pressure due to hers being low that I thought I’d check. So I’d urge anybody who doesn’t get checked regularly to invest in a home testing monitor, not sure how much they cost but can’t imagine they’re too expensive (I’ll let you know when I order one later). Anyway stay safe and stay healthy all and do me a favour Stoke, next time I’m in hospital can we have the usual dull nil nil please😀

My wife’s 8 stone, an obsessive long distance runner and a vegetarian and she’s had to take tablets for it for the last 15 years, hers is hereditary she’s been told.
I’m a firm believer everyone should get an MOT done on themselves every 12 months (even every 6 months of possible) as there are so many hidden diseases that can be caught early.
Hope you get better soon mate......

I bought blood pressure testing kit for my business, me and the staff test ourselves once a month or so, and have a bit of banter whilst doing it, so far none of us have had any bad readings but I'd recommend any employer to get one. Its a non brainer really.
Hope you get it sorted hartshill

On a related comment to redstriper's workplace testing, place I used to work at did some blood pressure and cholesterol testing, most of us were in the normal range, one bloke who was slightly older but by no means old or ill had a cholesterol level over 11. Normal is under 5 I think. No symptoms, nothing. Just goes to show the value of getting checked regularly before something goes badly wrong.

So the plot thickens. I’ve just got back from the hospital again and my blood pressure had dropped off quite a bit so that was good. However based on the info I’ve given them they think it could probably be caused by sleep apnea, which is when you stop breathing for long periods whilst asleep causing fatigue in the day. So now I’ve got to be put on a sleep apnea machine for a while🙄

What where the numbers, over /over,?? 190/130 up to 232/141. Scary stuff 😐 In Sweden anything above xx/80 is usually treated. First with exercise, diet and less stress. Then the meds. I have myself a galloping blood pressure, easily too high when active and too low when asleep. But due to the pandemic another slight problem has occured. After wearing the gas mask for protection against paint removers and stuff, for several days and hours at the time in the spring, my pulse and blood pressure is always low now, too low. I often feel chilly. The rest pulse is 30 sometimes now and when checked at the hospital blood pressure was 98/80, and it was even after rushing. Sometimes my sight gets black. It must have been the air block that have made it this way. No use to call a doctor. They won't let me in. I haven't got Corona. Take care, h-badger! The most important thing now is to bring your values down to a more normal interval. Yours were awfully high! Were they really taken after resting a few minutes?

It will probably make wonders for you, since the blood pressure builds up due to the sleep apnea. He's like another person now. Keep in mind there are other treatments for this condition as well.

I've cut down since Lockdown 1 as I was overdoing takeaways and alcohol earlier in the year (sitting in the garden when the weather was nice, having a beer over the fence with the neighbours etc- I was probably getting through seven cans a day minimum).
I put a lot less salt on my food these days and only smoke on occasion (usually on a night out or on holiday, so obviously not much at the moment). If I have a curry, I don't have stodgy naan bread (chipatis are better). If you do a home curry, the Lloyd Grossman sauces are healthier and tastier than some of the other brands- I just add my own garlic, chilli and ginger to mine.
I fully expected to have put weight on but I'm about the same as February. I tried some trousers/shirts on this week and they still fit anyway! Getting rid of Sky Sports for a few months helped, as I drink when live sport's on.

Many health providers use the same make. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00IIOI9Q2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_HdbPFb1D4ZR1RAnd all the best. I know two people who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, to their surprise. Both had stopped breathing in the night 300 times or more to their surprise.....one apparently up to two minutes. They use an oxygen cannister and mask and have got used to it. ( not sure if that's reassuring or the opposite...sorry)

As some have mentioned having a blood pressure monitor at home is handy even if only used very little. We have had one for many years knowing family history. I would recommend buying one you can get them for about £20 at most chemist.
I have been luck enough to work for companies that have had annual health check ups in house as prestwitch says try and get an annual MOT with your health centre if not able to a blood pressure monitor also a handy piece of equipment to have/use at home.
Note know what readings mean and when to get it professionally checked. I do mine 3 times as the first one can be slightly higher than the later 2 (white coat syndrome).
Hope you get sorted Hartshill.

Most consultations are done over the phone during COVID so I literally had to sit their all day waiting for them to tell me what to do. Haven’t you read the original post!!!🤣

I can’t bear to even look at a beer never mind drink one which can only be a good thing. Did a very steady 2k jog earlier. If it is as predicted sleep apnea then I’m not sure what the plan will be then but that all needs checking for first. Good news is all the major organs appear to be functioning as they should, even the liver😉
