I'm not particularly a zoo fan , unless they are trying to save species/ animals.....but a sign of the times....and obviously sad/ desperate for the workers and an issue for the animals /?sfnsn=scwspmo

I loved that series they did at Chester zoo, very few if any are now just exhibits they are all conservation minded and breed endangered species.

But the days of keeping animals in cages/enclosures just so we can gawp at them should be over. By all means conservation and breeding programmes if necessary, but habitat protection seems, to me, to be a far better way of dealing with the threat to species in their actual environments generally.

In a perfect world of course but unfortunately we don't and animals etc are being left "homeless" every day due to development or harvesting resources and nothing will change that. As long as there is a need for certain items we will continue to pillage natural resources.

True, but nobody seems to want to address the fact that chucking more and more people onto the planet and using up more and more natural resources to fund our existing consumerist growth model won't last forever.

And that's the crux of the matter nobody will deal with it ever in any country. So while a zoo is not perfect they do a valuable service in repopulating groups that are on the brink of extinction. Kew do a similar thing with seeds of otherwise extinct flora given the commercial throw away world we live in its vital we preserve what we have left in some form. I'm sure there is something we could do but no chance of anyone doing it.

On the very few occasions I've been to a zoo, I find the obvious depression of most of the larger animals, especially the smarter ones, quite depressing in itself.

While I've not been to one in the UK lately I've been to Singapore Zoo and Cologne and both while not prefect are as natural as can be no glass enclosures for most exhibits a vast improvement on what I remember them to be as a child. I would go as far as saying Singapore is more of a safari on foot than a zoo.

It the first zoo I've ever been to and be able to touch and feed some of the animals like elephants.
