I was looking at another thread where Gods had posted Bob Dylan performing 'Hard Rain's Gona Fall' and my thoughts immediately went to my preferred version by Bryan Ferry. This got me thinking, Has there ever been a more covered artist in the history of music? Hell, some of his songs are that synonymous with the first artist to cover them (like Jimi Hendrix and Julie Driscoll) that you hear a new version and you think they're covering the cover and not Dylan. The more I've thought about it, the play list is bigger than Charlie Adam's arse, so what are some of your favourite Zimmerman reworks?

Always, the best Bob Dylan covers are done by Bob Dylan, live. This is unfortunately incorrect on the one occasion I saw him he was awful. He couldn't have ruined Like a rolling stone any more if he'd been trying to.

I've got a friend who is Dylan mad ( I can't understand these people who seem overly devoted to one perfomer) and has seen him 30/ 40 times particularly on his " never ending tour" and he says that he had his off periods.

Adele obviously had a huge hit with this but the very mention of her name seems to get some people frothing at the mouth so here's Billy Joel, think he covered it first anyway. Besides that the girl on the bongos looks stunning

My brother (much older than I) was a massive fan and I got him tickets and took him to see Bob in Brum. The alone and together tour with Tom Petty. I was a massive Petty fan at the time so it was no great hardship. McGuinn opened and it was stella.Seen him a number of times since. Don’t go to a lot of gigs as it’s what I do for a living but agreed, he can be difficult and inaccessible live but it’s always interesting. They’re his songs, I think he has earned the right to do them as he wants lol. As a side note I do a couple of covers of his when I play live acoustic sets. If I do knockin on heavens door I always finish the chorus with “ like so many times before” Inevitable some Dylan bore will tell me that those aren’t the right words and I can tell them without a word of a lie that it’s the only version I have heard him sing live

I posted this on the Listening To thread, last month. Dylan has been covered many times but All Along The Watchtower is, imo, the most incredible pop song ever written. It is almost other worldly in the way that in many cases, it completely possess the artist covering it and it's in the covers of the song, that we realised how incredible it actually is. My favourite song of all time ... period. Three of my favourite artists of all time, doing it, the first from Michael Hedges, just a few days before he sadly passed ...
