The following two paragraphs are taken from a Sentinel article today:
Stoke’s average age in Nathan Jones’s final match in charge at Millwall, a year ago tomorrow, was 28.3 – and had cost more than £40m to put together.
In comparison, the average age against Brentford was 26.9 – and cost about £11m – despite the arrival of influential 33-year-old summer free agents John Obi Mikel and Steven Fletcher.
I've always admired MON as a manager and I regarded Jones as being a man out of his depth. But even I am gob smacked when I see the stats above.
I really hope that we get back to the Premier League before the rest of football wakes up to the full extent of the turnaround in our fortunes under MON

Obviously didnt think it at the time but in hindsight I am so,so glad Jones was cack because if he had been ok we wouldn't have MON as our manager.

Have a look at the league table when he joined, and then have a look at the final table last season, and tell us he’s achieved nothing. I echo LP’s worry about another team coming in for MON. Hopefully he goes unnoticed when the PL sacking season kicks in. |

I'd say that converting what looked like almost certain relegation to a mid table position by the end of his first (part) season, was a superb achievement, to be honest. I'd also say that getting the cost of the starting eleven down by almost £30 million in his first summer window whilst reducing the age average age significantly, is a much more impressive performance than Jones achieved. I didn't make my original post to try to belittle Jones (even though I do think he underachieved) but to show just how MON has turned things round at minimal financial outlay. He's also done it by using players (especially young players) who Jones just didn't rate and certainly didn't use. |

Spot on!Jones is a complete chancer.He was trying to take credit for signing Powell and Davies after we beat them recently.He omitted to say that they only got two starts between them under him.His post match interviews make me cringe with embarrassment. |

O'Neill himself made a point of saying that escaping relegation was not anything to celebrate, which I agree with him on. He's a good manager for us, but let's celebrate when he wins us promotion or gets us to Wembley (even if most of'us' won't be able to go there this time).

What I am saying is that avoiding relegation from the position we were in when MON arrived, is a superb achievement. And I stand by that opinion and I bet I am not alone! |

If MON gets us up, why would he go anywhere else? The bigger teams won't go for him and we'd be perfectly able to pay him what he would get at teams our level. The same goes for the players. If we got promoted they'd stay. If we don't go up but make the Play Offs, we may well lose the three players mentioned, but for once we may get decent money with which to build again. We're all getting ahead of ourselves though. I think if we're hanging around Top 6 in January we may look to draft in one or two for the push, if we can offload as well, but it'll take some doing. Lose badly at Swansea and it'll be sackcloth and ashes time again. Let's het to the New Year and ask more serious questions then.

Tymon for me isn’t in that bracket and I’m not sure on Thompson yet but haven’t seen enough to form an opinion yet. Look at Brentford for how they’ve bought young players on the up and made a fortune selling them. I honestly think that if Brentford had kept a consistent squad they’d be in the Prem by now. |
