Nice to know we have these individuals doing the unpleasant work some seem to think doesn’t need doing. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-54684440. Typical of the BBC to describe them as stowaways.😞 Hope they and all other service men and women, past and present, are properly looked after now and in the future, especially as we near Armistice Day to remind us of the sacrifice and risk they expose themselves to.

I think the BBC were just quoting this the same as Sky News.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The operation was launched after Hampshire Police received reports that a "number of stowaways" were on board the vessel and had made "verbal threats towards the crew".

Both originated in WW2 with the SBS in 1940 and the SAS a year later. The SBS were the first British Forces to land in the Falklands War - they will be delighted you don't know much about them.

Our SBS is the military equivalent of the Navy SEALS in America. Oddly, in the USA it is the SEALS that are the best known of their Special Forces, largely due to extensive roles in mainstream Hollywood films.

I know some UK troops do security work for a bit of extra money but navy seals making movies they must be really badly paid

my understanding was that the SBS were the most elite of the SAS, could be wrong, normally they are kept shrouded in secrecy, this is obviously a bit of a statement making the actions public

We were doing some R&IT at a loch in the darkest depths of Scotland and a coach with a dozen or so of them on turned up, their accom was quite close to ours apparently. There's no way you'd have known they were in the forces judging by their appearance, maybe by the hardware they were carrying, but not by their appearance. To be honest they looked more like a bunch of revolutionaries and some of them looked positively psychotic!

I suspect not much is said about the SBS because the general public/ general media confuse them with the SAS clearly with this one they got the story straight.

They rarely get the same amount of coverage as their colleagues from Hereford. I shan’t even go there as to who is the lead, they will both argue a case, but the main thing is we have some of the very finest special forces in the world who are ready to do this kind of stuff when needed to deal with “stowaways”.

For us ex-matelots we have probably encountered some of the SBS in training, I remember one night a group of us capturing one trying to sneak onto the ship from the sea, and then the master at arms trying to 'torture' him for information by putting ice cubes down the wet suit

There is a decent book about them on amazon titled special boat squadron was on prime reading that’s where I read it a while ago might be worth looking out for.

They knew the stowaways were onboard way before they got to British waters. Not sure why they didn't contact the authorities straight away.
