I note the 4 Tory MPs for Stoke & Newcastle voted against! Bell, Brereton, Gideon and Gullis hang your heads in shame! And to think Gullis was a school teacher too!

Left wing opportunists? Wanting to feed British children not even old enough to vote, in a pandemic and economic crisis, is opportunism? I would have thought opportunism was giving lucrative contracts to party donors with no tender or performance targets. Everyone has their own definition options I guess.

He has mentioned how he was a teacher in deprived areas too. Staggering really. Still, he is just an opportunist MP who was lucky enough to be selected as the Con candidate and rode the Brexit Wave. I hope he enjoys the 5 years as he will most definitely not be back.

Brereton's cut and paste response on this issue really is the most offensive load of old balls I've ever seen. They simply don't care.

Maybe just try being a decent fucking human being therefore making sure the poorest kids aren't going hungry during the holidays. That's all the fucking understanding you need. It’s a disgrace. I’ve bought my booze and fags, paid my sky tv subscription, done the food shopping for the week but only for myself and now I’ve got nothing left and my poor kids are going to starve for a week until the school feeds them again. And now I’ve got some idiot thinking that the first pennies I have should go on feeding my kids and not the last!

And even if it were true, and 90% of parents were milking the system, or taking the piss, their fucking kids are going to school in a morning without any breakfast. Which is a disgrace, whoever is to blame. The kids come first, they can't choose their parents.

Don’t you know where you are?! I think it was Thatcher who described socialism as the politics of envy, and maybe it does reflect a certain envy of rich people. But I’ll tell you what, I’d rather that sort of envy than this empty, bitter, clueless, cynical, race to the bottom variety directed at those least worthy of our envy and most in need of our help At its heart, the Tory movement relies on sowing seeds of division and envy between ordinary people who have far more in common than they realise. To distract from a general plundering of most wealth for the people who need it least.

What has that got to do with a child that goes to school with an empty stomach not knowing where his or her next meal is coming from or that the only meal will be from their school? Fuck me the shit is certainly floating to the top on this thread!

These things just aren’t that straight forward as they seem and though not possible each case should be dealt with individually. There’s a mum local to me that claimed for school food vouchers even though the previous weekend she’d spent over 100 pounds on alcohol for a party at hers. How’s that fair and is a total abuse of the system. Of course that’s an exception but exactly the reason it shouldn’t be just yes or no. There’s clearly a lot of people around who have the funds but still claim and still receive benefits to fund other non essential things which is so unfair on the genuine cases.

Quite right it's taxpayer funded. As a tax payer, things I'm happy for my tax to be spent on: Children of all ages receiving food packages. Things I am not happy for it to be spent on: Faulty PPE, failing track and trace, non-built vanity bridge projects, £7k-a-day consultants. 5 Conservative MP backbones, and 1 Conservative Mayor.

Birmingham's Conservative mayor goes against government and says govt should pay.
Well said, sir, shame our local MPs weren't so similarly backboned.
I would've thought doing the right thing on this is much more likely to get you re-elected in Stoke than just being a toadying party MP. People will remember.

If a child is going to school without any breakfast I’d say there’s a 99% chance that the child’s parent is to blame, not the government. Putting my sarcasm about booze and fags to the side, feeding my kids is number one in my financial priorities. If I had to starve, get an abysmal credit rating, have the bailiffs knocking on my door because I wasn’t paying my bills I would do if that was the only way of feeding my kids. There are families in poor financial states. The government may be, but not always, to blame for that. But that poor financial state means that they’re struggling to pay their rent/mortgage, gas and electric, water bills etc. If a kid isn’t being fed, then the parent(s) needs to take a good look at themselves.
