Party politics aside, what a refreshing, calm and astute man Mr Burnham appears to be, with the interests of his City and people put first
Calmly delivers his message with enough passion, doesn't get involved in the mud slinging particularly, engaging, empathetic, and seemingly able to bring together politicians from all sides of the chamber together for a common goal.
The Labour party really did miss a trick not making him leader back when he put his hand up, he is an excellent leader.
Have no doubt those in charge will override him today and put Manc in Tier 3 anyway with little care on jobs and social impact (and their infection rate has plateaued and starting to drop post the initial student spike), you wonder if you will start to see the first signs of a rebellion with the feisty North West making its feelings known....
Interesting to see the Govt also using its selective stats when it needs to undermine people (critical care beds 'full' (there were only 15 Covid ICU beds in the hospital used in the example) etc), its a dangerous game when people are starting to get a little anarchic about the situation, especially when the areas being selected for the harshest restrictions sometimes have lower infection rates than Tory heartland areas that are still in the 'medium' rating...
Good luck Andy - an honest and genuine person in the stench of politics.

Boy will he have a shock when he finds out who the health minister responsible for the N Staffs hospital scandal was and how he tried to cover it all up.... He's a slightly more self aware Jess Phillips in that he doesn't talk about himself all the time but still has a vastly inflated view of his own abilities.

Although I do think the opposition are improving. Starmer is showing himself as being credible as well as being the boring/level headed kind of leader that we need right now. The Shadow Chancellor seems only capable about complaining about things, the Shadow Health guy is no better than Matt Hancock and I don't think I would recognise any of the others in the Shadow Cabinet as they've largely gone missing over the last few months. Still, there's a good chance that they're better than most of the current Government Ministers. It used to be that by voting conservative, you knew what you were going to get, but these days we get the same shit and arrogance that can be expected plus a boatload of incompetence and a bit of value added evil.

I always thought him to be the rational face of labour when he was in the party, and should have been leader if they wanted to have any hope of winning.
He's every right to question what's going on and every right to try and drive a deal for his city. Ultimately though he has a wider responsibility and so is walking a tightrope in terms of how far he should push it.

LOL. Here is the first paragraph of their wiki page... Easy to see why certain individual(s) on here hang on their every word. Sleaford Mods are an English electronic punk music duo formed in 2007 in Nottingham. The band features vocalist Jason Williamson and, since 2012, musician Andrew Fearn.[6] They are known for their abrasive, minimalist musical style and embittered explorations of austerity-era Britain, culture, and working class life, delivered in Williamson's East Midlands accent.[1] The duo have released several albums to critical praise

Again, I find it hard to disagree with most of that. Although I think you're a touch harsh on Jon Ashworth strikes me as one who would grow into the role. Value added evil is my phrase of the day though Sir, Bravo! 👏

I think it's fair to say most people have been criticising him since he sat on his arse and did nothing for about 10 days in March. He was fucking useless during that period, and it ain't got much better since. Let's hope for everyone's sake he starts showing some sort of leadership soon - although the lack of test and trace may have fucked things for this winter (really hope I'm wrong on that one).

The failure to implement a functioning Test and Trace system will be both economically and politically the biggest failure in UK Government since James Callaghan sabotaged the reform of industrial actions. 'Whatever it takes' when it suits.

I thought he was a decent bloke until this his public blackmail of the government is a disgrace. Not only has this delay put people at risk to do it for money is pathetic, he asked for 90million to help. Now forgive me but if he was so principled then he should have stuck to his guns instead he dropped his demands to 65million he was offered 60 and said no. Now if he needed 90 say so and stick to it thats principled instead he's an opportunist and a poor one at that, dont play games with people's live Andy. Just for clarification I dont agree with further lockdowns because as he stated it is devastating business around the country but dont blackmail people for money by risking death its disgusting.

You now being just like one of these politicians who criticise eight months into this, like I said in my op what would they have done differently given that government guided by so called specialists who even contradicted each other with different opinions, how the hell do we mere mortals know what the way to go is!!!

I'm with Franklin on this one.
Burnham's a snake. If you don't think this is small p - politics and posturing there's not much left to say.
Not that the Tories have given themselves any room to not look like fascist cunts throughout their 'handling' of COVID - (Handling here meaning flapping and going full nanny state.)

It doesn't alter the fact that he's spoke more sense in the last two weeks than the government has since the pandemic began.

Even this government isn't as filthy, heinous and so bereft of compassion as to deprive an area of funds it has already calculated that it needs, just out of bitterness.....is it?

No. They’ve fucked up their comms again. Manchester will get the same as everyone else will get. Which will stop stupid bickering as different regions enter tier 3. Why they didn’t use today to establish that position is completely beyond me. Other than gross incompetence. They had a chance to put Burnham in his place but instead shot themselves in the foot. I rate this cock up alongside that other recent piece of gross ineptitude of having a minister stand up in the commons and announce that the Government intended to break international law. No wonder folk in Scotland put their faith in Sturgeon rather than Johnson. There is no way she’d make these fuck ups.
