Yesterday went for eye test and new specs hoping to take advantage of their buy one get second pair free. So got tested and chose a pair which with varifocal and light weight Anti scratch lenses came to £209. Bit steep I thought but with the second pair would make it a decent price. The assistant said I could have any pair with the same frame cost including sun glasses. So I chose sun glasses. The assistant said that will be a total of £390. But I thought the second pair were free. Yes they are but only the frames, you have to pay for the light weight lenses plus £59 for polarising. WTF my Mrs bought a pair of over the counter polarised sun glasses for a tenner so how can they justify £59 for polarising the lenses. So decided to just go for the one pair. That’s £152 she said. But I thought you said £209? No because you aren’t taking the "free" pair offer we can give you 25% discount on the single pair. As a mathematician I can’t get my head around the figures she worked. Free second pair my arse.

They’ve got a more than decent range and their prices include all the add-on Specsavers charge for (although maybe not the polarising).

If you are a referee than I recommend a new pair every month.

So in essence, it's a bit of a con. They don't even keep that a secret, by giving you a much better price on your £209 glasses if you don't want the 'free' second pair. Then the 25% discount doesn't add up either.
Sounds like you had a lucky escape, I wonder how many people go for this and think they've got a deal?

I do like their T.V. adverts, though. My favourite was that of the shepherd shearing sheep and then his sheepdog by mistake. It reminds me of an occasion when I was walking with friends in a remote part of Mull. We had sat down for our lunch when a flock of sheep appeared from round the corner, followed by the sheepdog and then a kilted young shepherd effing and blinding at the dog who, apparently wasn't doing his job properly. The tone and language from the shepherd changed abruptly when he spotted us!

First of all, she probably gave you a 25% discount not to lose you as a future customer. Second, if you had picked the sunglasses as your first choice, you would have got the second pair for free. Third, you shouldn't pay extra for the light weight lenses in the second pair, if they were the same as the first pair's. If this the offer they normally have: buy 1, get 2: If the frames both are in the same price group. And if the other pair doesn't have any extra add ons - even better lens, for instance.

To be fair there was a thread about some codger being rescued from a mountain that stayed on the football side... As the codger who was the subject of the thread I did think about complaining about it being on the footy board. But it was started by Malcolm Clarke who is a sort of National Treasure for his work on behalf of fans - so obviously it wasn't going to be moved! One law for the "establishment" and another for the rest of us!

Well they even had the gall to offer £59 reduction on the "free" second pair if I didn’t opt for light weight lenses. She seemed desperate for me to opt for a "free" pair and she got herself In a right muddle giving me the final price trying several times to put it through their computer pricing system. She ended up doing it on her calculator. Having priced it up myself I feel sure she under charged me. £99 for the frames, £79 for the premium varifocal lens and £59 for the lightweight lens. Comes to a total of £237. Minus 25% = £177. She charged my £152. Happy days.

Comes to a total of £237. Minus 25% = £177. She charged my £152. Happy days. Probably it wasn't the store manager and probably she got a bit nervous. Perhaps she came from a job pool, new and all. I shifted from another one to Specsavers, to get a lower price. We also have some other minor stores as well. Normally, if you go to most of these stores and need a certain lens correction for long, medium and short reading distance sight plus astigmatism, in a normal frame, and they make the plastic lens (they are never made of glass these days) first step thinner - nothing fancy that is: the price is seldom below 5000 SEK (£420). If you want the most thin lens there is on the market, and to react to the sun (could be used as sunglasses), with the widest reading field possible, prices are between 7000-12000 (£590-£1000). Specsavers sold my pair a few years ago for about 2000 SEK (£170). The frame was in their own std brand.

My mother had both her eyes done a few years ago - one at a time. I had to go there and be there to give her the eye drops. 300 of them I think it was. First thing she said after op: "I thought the carpet was dirty. But it isn't!"

Madness. It's not without risk. And secondly, the eyes changes over the years. If they were short-sighted at 25, get an op done, they'll probably have to buy new glasses before 30 anyway.

I will not be using them again. She told me I needed long distance glasses for driving. I replied I can see 4 golf balls on the green from 250+ yards! Had Them anyway and was not comfatuble with them so went back. A different optician confirmed that I did not need them.
