Not sure what Souttar's got left on his contract, but maybe it needs reviewing.... Won't be long before teams start sitting up and taking notice, if they aren't already!!! End of 2022 season

A bit like with Mikel's performances, the biggest gauge of how well they're playing isn't so much what they're doing as what they're not doing.
For example, we haven't seen our centre backs outjumped by tiny forwards, lose their men at set pieces and trudge through treacle after getting done on the turn. Compare the assuredness of those two today with a typical defensive performance over the last few years.

Playing him on the left side probably didn't help with his passing. Without trying to sound all Bayern, it shouldn’t matter THAT much should he? He also needs to learn how to play on the left side and quickly as that’s the team I’d like to play moving forward. Might be a slightly off day, but just calling it how I see it. Maybe it shouldn't but it always has, with how we want to play it would be much better to have a left footer there.

When did footballers stop practising using BOTH feet? When you think of the top players of the pasts, MOST of them could use either foot equally well (Ference Puskas excepted!!). When you think of the hours that our own Sir Stan spent mastering two-footed skills, it's a shame today's pampered darlings can't be arsed (or instructed) to improve their weaknesses.

Chester got dropped rightly for being poor in the air. Now we seem to win everything with those 3 at the back. Very solid back 3 if you ask me. Maybe questions against some pacy forwards but this looks the future Chester and Fox were injured

Bobby Moore, John Terry, Tony Adams were not blessed with pace, one was world class and the other two didn’t get done too often. If you can read a game, the gaining of experience will help compensate for some lack of pace. Best thing for Toby Adams career was being destroyed by Van Basten at Euro 88. He learned from that and can't say he was ever done like that again

Souttar has been excellent - just stepped straight in and doing a great job. He reminds me of Huth a bit - still a bit to go footballing wise but an absolute presence.
Collins is going right to the top. I hope he takes us up with him.

No real relevance to your point but what a finisher he was.

Both excellent again today. We all know how good Collins can and will be given game time and am impressed with his leadership and composure, but I am so pleasantly surprised with how Souttar has performed since he's come back, he has been a revelation, wins everything in the air, knows when to go for the ball and when to back off to force a player wide, composed on the ball and positionally very adept. He's a real throw-back to Huthy. Have to be our 2 first choice centre-halves on both the strength of today's and their previous performances this season (to play together in a back 4, and the third berth up for grabs with a 3, Would be BMIs if he was here, but, out of the centre-halves we have now then either Batth or Ryan when fit)

Just think if we can get Edwards back to his initial promise we could have a very good and young back line

Today, Souttar and Collins well marshalled by the safe hands of Ba’ath. Ba’ath comes comes in for some criticism, but is a good egg and a safe pair of hands in the Championship. Do not forget his contribution in maintaining our Championship status, whilst “ stars” sat on their arse.

The main thing we need is patience, they will make mistakes but will learn. Its probably a help for them that there are no crowds.

He was decent today, but his contribution in maintaining our Championship status was to be the lynchpin in a defence that conceded 68 goals. Having said that, I’d sooner have him than Chester.

Yet another clean sheet! Both were more than adequate and I prefer Batth with them rather than Chester or Fox. Well done Stoke, we are getting somewhere now the back line is sorted

Bruno alongside these two would have been the best partnership we’ve had for ages.
Shame Bruno left us and that has left us without a left sided centre back because Fox was shocking there.

Fox was fine there and much better than Bruno when he gets pulled out to his natural left back position. What exactly did he do that was shocking?

absolutely no relevance to the thread but what a goal against the ussr I was at that game and it looked like a naff cross from our angle ,Was pretty much the general feeling from those we spoke to afterwards also. I was in my teens and had rather a few large frothy beers with lovely Dutch ladies pre game so my punditry was at a Sol Campbell standard at the time

In what way was he shocking? We have given the grand total of one bad goal away this season (Bristol City first) All of our defenders have defended well this season including Fox
