Sentinel seem to be blaming Hughes for his signing, slightly unfair I'm sure he was given his 5yr contract long after MH had gone That cant be said for Wimmer etc etc.

I'm fairly certain Bauer was a Cartwright / Scholes signing and nothing to do with either Lambert or Hughes.

His extension was signed July 2018
Lambert left May 2018

Wasn't he a Hughes/Bowen scouting job initially? And then we pushed it through anyway because we were panicky about sacking a manager in the middle of a transfer window and needed bodies in?
The extension was a bad move in hindsight but at the time most people were overjoyed and it was seen as a statement of intent by the club.

I can still understand why we signed Bauer, and with Edwards going out on loan he could still have been an option as a wingback in our system. We paid around £6M for him, if I remember this correctly, which is a relatively low fee in the PL and everything pointed in the right direction with this player. The big mistake here was to give him an improved contract after relegation, but I'll hold my hands up and admit I was glad we did at the time. I honestly think we were way too certain we'd go straight up again, and splashing out £10-12M for players in this division certainly is crazy business! Still I think most of the fans loved to see us do that in our first season back in the Championship, but as we failed it has backfired and we now need to keep finances very thight due to FFP.

The contract extension was nothing to do with either though as was done in the summer.

5 year contract what were they smoking That is way too long unless it's a very young promising player on relatively little money.

Cost millions? - ✔️ Can’t get rid of him? - ✔️ Nowhere near the first team? - ✔️
Looks like a Hughes signing to me.

The contract extension after though that was all Scholes Without a doubt this, he spoke about it in the post match interview following the defeat to man utd. It's easy to slate the decision to extend his contract in hindsight but no one was complaining when it happened. He was one of the only players to come out of that second half of a season prior to relegation with any credit and at the time it was thought to keep the motivated, better performing core together then we would bounce straight back. It was just understimated the amount of baggage and bad eggs that we had accrued under Cartwright / Hughes.

No one knows who was involved in him signing etc, can speculate and point fingers all day Bottom line is until someone comes in for him he's here for the foreseeable future foreseeable future and personally would like to see him on the pitch but until then.

The Bauer signing wasn't the worst by a long chalk. He was MotM in a couple of games i saw in his first season, and was at one point the only positive player in a team of players running scared.
He pledged to stay when we got relegated and I'm sure he'd like to be playing rather than sitting around on his arse. A clever chap by all accounts, speaks five languages and holds a pilots licence. Must admit I thought he'd do really well at Celtic where they're expected to attack most games, maybe a bit unlucky they signed a 19 year old who they decided was ready to blood early.
If he leaves I'll be wishing him well.

Bauer had his medical on the day we lost at Coventry in the fa cup when Hughes was the manager He actually signed whilst we were playing and listened to 2nd half on radio in car back to the airport knowing the incumbent manager was leaving. Bauer knew he would be returning to a new manager. Hughes knew he was leaving before the coventry game.

Does it matter?
His positional sense was the worst I've seen.
I'm even thinking those games everyone thought he was playing left wing, he was actually meant to be right back.

The real issue is the contract extension that I think was signed when we didn't have a manager. Not sure if Rowett was with us at that point or not but I remember seeing something on here that said he definitely wouldn't have given any players a new contract in his first couple of weeks, without seeing them training first. Was almost certainly a Scholes job on the extension. And as pointed above - definitely a Highes signing, confirmed after the Man Utd game when Eddie N was in charge.

When things were looking good with Bauer he was a player identified by Mark Cartwright, finally having been unleashed and showing us what he could do.
Then he turned a bit shit, they double checked the paperwork, forgot they'd done a big sentinel piece on it, and said he was a Hughes signing.

What now for Bauer and Wimmer? Can they really be left to train separately for the next 10 weeks? Does this serve any purpose towards our goal to move them on?
Surely with being light at right back/wing back cover Bauer should come back in the fold for now? We are paying him after all?
Wimmer too surely training with the first team keeps him closer to get a move at some point? I really have no idea what personally has gone on with them in terms of fall outs/attitude problems or MON feels there could be issues with the squad re the money they are on? At the end of the day the club gave them their contracts and probably none of us would give that up to walk away for the sake of our families. I can’t see how they can be totally blamed?
I know people will have strong opinions and ideas to what may have gone on but unless they are truly informed it’s purely guesswork?
Thoughts?
