Is it just me or is our midfield worse off since we added Mikkel? Our midfield has been the worst part of our team for years so hard to see how he could make it worse We haven't conceded many goals which was a huge problem mainly due to wafer thin midfield defensive effort, until Cousins plugged some gaps last season.

Probably our Second most Inconsistent player just behind Powell, wouldn’t be at all bothered if they both departed
Promotion teams are build on consistency and personnel

There's nothing wrong with Clucas going forward. He's got on the end of 0.6 xG in three games, which is slightly above his per 90 average from last season. His failure to score is because conversion rate naturally jumps around a lot and last season's unsustainably "clinical" Clucas was always going to raise expectations to unrealistic levels. Blue circles are Clucas' 4 shots at goal, greyed out are the rest of the Stoke's team in 2020/21.

Is it just me or is our midfield worse off since we added Mikkel? Genuine question: how did you watch the game yesterday and come to the conclusion Jordan Cousins is better? Mikel was a Rolls Royce yesterday. Unfortunately I couldn’t watch. Family matters. So could only listen on the radio. I am basing my question based on result to date, especially goals scored against mediocre teams. 3 goals from 6 games doesn’t cut it. Most of the goals are created from midfield, and most of the rest are scored from midfield. At least the defense is shaping up, if we abandon three at the back, which we can’t use without two wing-backs. I just haven’t seen any improvement with Powell, Clucas and Mikkel playing together . Assuming Mikkel is the King-pin of the midfield that leaves two spots to fill. Powell is off his game, so it’s two from Clucas, Oakley-Booth, Tymon, and Thompson. I really think Tymon has great potential so that leaves one from the other three: Oakley-booth, Clucas or Thompson. I’d rate Thompson below the other two. So maybe he has to build a midfield 3 around Tymon, Mikkel and Oakley-Booth. I can get excited about that. Trouble is, it requires dropping the captain with no obvious replacement. Here’s another alternative thought. Powell remains me of Peter Dobing, excellent on his day but could not be bothered more than half the time. He didn’t even like football that much - he preferred pipe smoking and fishing. Waddington turned him around completely by giving him responsibility and made him captain. Now Dobing had to show up every week and lead the team on the pitch. He still had his marde-arse moments, but for the most part he was a completely different player - we won our only trophy in the last 50 years and we very, very nearly won the league. Signing Greenhoff, Conroy, Smith and Hudson were important, as was bringing back Big John, but making Peter Dobing the leader on the pitch was one of the best things Waddington ever did. Having a leader on the pitch is often under-rated, but every good team has one. This is a key decision MON has to make. Shawcross led mainly by example, but his leadership is clearly missing. interesting decisions ahead.

Bring in Collins instead of Chester and make him Captain. We will then have a good centre half pairing on the pitch and a driving force. Give the young man the chance now!

To be fair why would we tinker with the defence the way we've started? long run I agree but Bristol aside we've been solid .We haven't conceded away from home yet

Mikel was a Rolls Royce yesterday. If that is Rolls Royce, we’ve no chance of finishing higher than mid table. There has not been a game where we have dominated midfield, and Bristol made us look slower than stop. I ‘m hoping Mikel has much more to offer- if that is as good as it gets then we will have some good performances, some lousy performances and a lot of bog standard performances.

Probably stokes most over rated player In living memory imo (and I’m 48) , always been a terrible liability without the ball and positionally very poor
The problem is he’s been absolutely gash with the ball also of late

Are we really knocking Sam Clucas Jesus fucking wept Goldfishes We was poor today. His touch is not great and the way we are playing means he is getting the ball in tight spaces and struggles to cope. He needs more options in front of him.

Clucas, for me, is being weighed down with the captain's armband. He isn't a captain and I think it's affecting him. Definitely not worth a start based on performances to date this season.

Rest him until his injury clears up, and I think he will come like he finished last year.

Very poor today but class player underneath. Form is temporary. Goals and play will come good soon. I’d persevere and I was a great critic today.

He isn't suited to this system at all and it's showing. The way he is being asked to play is very similar to how he was asked to play in the diamond ie. The legs and pivot for the only wide outlet on that side of the pitch. His form was transformed in the 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 last season as he only had the middle of the pitch to think about.
Anything more than that and he struggles, and eventually gives up.
