4-3-3 isn't it? A little disappointed as I hoped/expected Ryan to start tonight. Struggling with a calf injury picked up in the U23s v Leeds apparently.

Morgan Fox as a centre half, if it is that, is still an improvement on the weekend.
We just need a left wing back now, and a right wing back, and we are set for that system.

Yeah I'd prefer 4231 but with the actual players he's picked, it's crying out for 433. Listening through on Grapey's link, MON is asked directly about it and he says "Most importantly you have to build the system tailored towards the players you have... I personally would prefer a 433 system but I'm just not sure we have the players at this minute" Which is absolutely mental because as you say, this very lineup is blatantly way more suited to 433. I can't quite believe he's said that tbh. Blimey, that is really, really odd.

If it is 3 at the back, Fox at left centre back and McClean at wing back is an improvement. It will be good to see if Souttar, Collins, TOB and Tymon build on last week's showing. I hope Tye gets a goal to get his season up and running too.

So we have to pack more numbers in there.

McKinlay wasn't asked about formation in his interview - but he read it out as a clear 3-5-2, so presumably that's what it is. I really hope it's 433. That would be just as bad as having 3 at the back, its more a 4-5-1 under MON.

In order to play 433 you need forwards who close down the opposition quickly and full backs who get forward and provide most of the width. As MON says, we don’t have these.

Just reward for that scintillating, all action display of leadership on Sunday 🙂 OK Sheikh, I'll bite - who is your choice for skipper? Not much experience in team there to hang it on. Unless, of course, you are saying he shouldn't be selected?

Would have gone with Cousins over Thompson but looking forward to seeing this side in action. Butland not on the bench again - surely means the plan is to get him out the door with the added value of not being cup-tied... If so that would suggest Southampton not interested My bad - for some reason I assumed playing in one cup would cup-tie you from all domestic cups. Googled it and that's not correct - it only applies for the competition in question

Butland not on the bench again - surely means the plan is to get him out the door with the added value of not being cup-tied... Why? As for Butland the value of not being cup-tied could come to nought as most of the teams remaining in the cup have no interest/money for him. Turns out I was wrong! In games until now I've never been impressed with Thompson's use of the ball, whilst also not offering a huge amount defensively. Cousins does offer that extra protection, and I did honestly think Gillingham would prove more of an offensive test than they ended up doing. But no - Thompson was arguably the best player on the pitch last night. Otherwise Soutter had a very good display, Tymon had an excellent first half but disappeared a bit in the second.
