Spoke to my Accountant last week and lo and behold I was advised to leave the country in order to ensure my non-residency status is maintained. So, at short notice, I find myself in Frankfurt. Anyone have any advice on decent bars, restaurants, things to do etc? I have a lot of admin work to catch up on so I don't plan to be out and about every night. I will plan a couple of day trips to Koln, Mainz and Heidelberg etc but if anyone can point me in the right direction for decent bars and restaurants it would be much appreciated. I am staying nr Sachsenhausen on the South bank of the river - 10mins into the centre by train/tram.

Dozens of bars and restaurants👍🏻

Bar Helium But to be fair you cant go wrong there i love it. As for Koln I use flix bus from Frankfurt HBF cheap and 2hrs you're there. Smashing indoor market called Kleinmarkthalle in Frankfurt Worth a visit. You can cross the river into the town on foot its not too far most of the busy area is around Konstablerwache where they usually have a large outside market at the weekends plenty if cheap booze and food.

Thats true mate not a bad bar at all being honest it depends on price and how much you want to spend plenty of ciosks that sell booze and its not uncommon to walk about with a veltins in your hand. One brilliant but slightly pricey place is mainnizza.de/Right on the river bank beautiful outside terrace.

Sachsenhausen is, indeed, the place to be. Just avoid the "stinkkase" though. If you are into culture, the Museum, near the main train station, known as the "Piece of Cake" because of its shape is worth a visit for some of its quirky exhibits of Modern Art and sculpture.

If you want a bit of culture, the Dom (cathedral) is well worth the knackering climb to the top and the Museum is excellent. Loads of great bars selling the delicious Kolsch.

Not having a pop at anyone, it's a free world (unless you believe Starkiller!), but why would you go to an Irish bar when abroad?
I'd much rather immerse myself in the local culture rather than some plastic Irish pub which are pretty much the same in every country you go to. Had a drink in one off Ocean Drive in Miami Beach in March and I could have been anywhere!
Just an opinion.

I'm off to Frankfurt for a few days then Koln for few days. I go once a month usually but I've been slightly hampered by covid both my lads lost their jobs and lots of rent costs has been annoying lol. Kolsh is delicious 😋

Da Rosaria on Otto Strasse - small and gets busy, but good Italian food at reasonable prices. Drinks well priced too. Outside seating on street in good weather. About 2 mins walk from Hauptbahnhof.
The Terrasse at the back of the Kleinmarkthalle does a good range of good wines, but can get a bit smoky.
On the top floor of Kaufhof (the massive department store just off Hauptwache) there is a good rooftop restaurant with an outdoor terrace giving amazing views over the city centre and for miles beyond.
If you fancy some chill-out time in the city centre and the weather is good, go to the Palmengarten (botanical gardens). 5 mins walk from the nearest U-bahn stop (Bockenheimer Warte I think), always plenty of space, take your headphones and zone out. There's a charge to get in.
Alternatively, for a free chill-out walk, do the old 'City Ring' circuit. Basically, you are following the line of the old medieval city walls and ditch / moat in front of them, which is now all public parks. It's about 2.7 miles in total, mostly with tree cover, water, cafes etc and takes you past some of the spots mentioned above like the Alte Oper. At the north-east corner of the circuit, you can cross the inner ring road and get to the Bethmann Park, which is my favourite spot to chill in spring and summer. The roads leading off from the inner ring road here close to the park, like Berger Strasse, have some decent daytime cafes and bars, and are cheaper than the city centre.
As regards daytrips, Mainz is easy to reach on the train, and the U-bahn allows you to reach some nice small towns quite a way out of the city like Kronberg im Taunus. Also, don't pass over smaller places that you can reach in Hesse cheaply on a day travel ticket using the local / regional trains, like Budingen, for example - well preserved medieval town, city walls, lots of timber-framed houses, big castle, nice countryside around etc. The only thing to watch out with these smaller places is sometimes they still follow very parochial old-fashioned opening hours, so you could arrive there at 12 and just find all food places and decent pubs shutting up and not re-opening until 3 or 4pm - check in advance.

Very good point its been a long time since I've visited a country where smoking is so prolific. Yes, even after nearly 30 years of going there, I still find myself doing a double-take at the cigarette posters / adverts in the street and in cinemas. I believe they are finally introducing a ban on public cigarette adverts from 2022.

I believe they are finally introducing a ban on public cigarette adverts from 2022. Noticed the smoking thing straight away. Not sure why I am still surprised. I have visited Germany often enough. You see a pretty German woman from afar and lo and behold as she gets nearer you see she has a fag on the go. It seems more women than men smoke..unless I am only staring at the women and am not noticing the men.

Thanks for all the tips. I will make a note of them and find them on Google Maps. As I said, I don't plan on going on the ale too much but I like all-dayers so maybe take a couple of days to explore the bars in the different areas. I have been around Sachsenhausen - quite small but with lots of bars. V.quiet on Mon-Tues early doors.

My contract was up on 15 Aug and my visa expired on 31 July so it was an easy decision for them not to renew my contract with Covid-19 and the oil price. Not unhappy. I have been a slave to the grind for 14 years. I just worked 135 days straight through in Kazakhstan from March. I am looking forward to taking 6-8 months off. I was hoping it would be in Thailand playing golf and lazing around but not going to get back there until January at the earliest. To make matters worse the wife is stuck in Australia studying. I was looking forward to going out there for the T20 World Cup cricket in Oct/Nov but that has been cancelled. I doubt I can get into Oz until Jan either.I am not interested in applying for a Marriage Visa and having to do 14d Q at my expense in Thailand especially when the wife is not there. Back in the UK for 4 days after Frankfurt and then off to Italy for 2 months. Taking my gravel bike with me so probably go to Bari/Puglia to get the better weather in Dec.

On the cultural side I can give another vote to the Cathedral & the climb up to the top of the tower. They were doing work on it last year when we went & the entrance for the tower was easy to miss down past the main cathedral entrance heading down towards the river. We didn't do it but the ones who zipped past us were enjoying the mini hotrod tour, www.hotrod-tour-frankfurt.com/en/homeTo be honest everything we did in Frankfurt was top notch, as with most cities the walk along the riverside is a great place to start, lots of life everywhere, hopefully its still the same in these times. Wish I was there again now
