3 at the back at home is unnecessary surely? This is the thing I wouldn’t be adverse to the idea if we were playing with attacking wing backs. Sometimes that can work although I’m not a fan of 3 at the back in any circumstances really when you can play 4 at the back with a proper midfield shape.

3 at the back at home is unnecessary surely? I would generally agree, but don't Brizzle play three at the back, so he may want to match them up. Personally I'd prefer to pull them out of their shape, leave three marking one forward and wide attackers who either push their wing backs backwards, or require lumbering centre backs to come out wide where they are not comfortable. It would leave 2v2 in our defence, but without wide midfielders to mark surely the full backs can help out, tuck in and cover from the opposite side.

Looks like Bristol City will be missing Dasilva, Baker and Kallas, that’s three of their first choice back four.

I’m always of the belief that you impose yourself on to them and not the other way round. Never really understood why teams change a game plan for a specific side. Not that we would obviously. But I think we need to more than contain. We have to attack, get Powell on the ball and impose a good attacking game on them.

Fletcher demands a start. Personally I’d go easy on the rest - if nothing else they likely need a rest after the shift they put in against Wolves. We’ll have a poor game soon no doubt at which point we can start bringing in Tymon, Brown, Souttar etc

I think if you’re the underdogs it’s understandable to be pragmatic in your approach, however at home v Bristol City we should let them worry about how we’re going to play and not the other way around. By all means have a plan b ready, but from KO I agree we should be taking the game to them in our most effective formation.

This, and it's a pretty easy decision. Dropping those who played in a good away draw in the league would send out the wrong message. Vokes needs to be dropped for Fletcher though. Looked a different team when he came on.

To some extent yes but even then I think the teams that believe in themselves hold fast on to what they do. Of course you can tweak it but like when Benitez would change his whole side to play us in the early PL days. Just stank of weakness to me. The better teams just cracked on with it. Or you had Man City made the one tweak with Kompany as a DM but that was all that was needed. And yeah definitely. At home in this league against any opposition we shouldn’t be worrying about them more than we usually would.

Looked a different team when he came on. If he only had 30 minutes in him yesterday, would he be ready to play for 90 mins three days later? Probably not-

Tricky one.
5-3-2 has served us well so far and seems to suit the players we have. Is it attacking enough at home? Not sure.
I'd probably go 4-2-3-1 and see how that shapes up.
Davies
Smith Batth BMI Fox
Mikel Clucas
Brown Powell McClean
Fletcher
subs: Butland, Tymon, Souttar, Thompson, Campbell, Vokes, Ince

A defensive formation is never overly accepted at home and is often felt as frustration in the crowd. Now there isn’t a crowd, he can just do it how he wants.

I wonder if O'Neil is creating two forward partnerships - Vokes and Campbell or Fletcher and Brown. As Fletcher and Brown didn't start on Thursday I wonder if they are lined up for today.

But Fletcher, Brown and Campbell were all on the bench. Surely one would have started if they were going to be left out on Sunday? And if Fletcher needs games he would have started if he was not going to on Sunday. Chance then on that logic it will be 4-3-3 and the question is who are the centre backs. My guess Batth and Chester as they were left out but Souttar could shade Chester based on the other night

Looked a different team when he came on. Yes but not sure how fit Fletcher is, think O'Neill is being careful with him. At some point Fletcher will be ready to start and then he absolutely plays more often than not.

The only reason I can think of why MON would not to go 3 CBs is because everyone is expecting him to.
None of our CBs are quick, good on the turn, good passers, and can all be caught out, so best to have 3 of them to close the gaps. Nor do we have genuine over-lapping FBs, although Smith is getting better by the match without Ince in front of him. Fox hasn't shown us much yet in that department.
I don't think any of the young players are "ready to go" except Brown, but fully expect them on the bench to be given more chances.
MON is careful and cautious without being totally negative, so I expect him to go with basically the Millwall team, with possibly Fletcher in for Vokes. Davies Chester Batth Indi Smith Obi Fox Campbell Powell Clucus Fletcher Does look a bit negative, but Bristol have started well, as they did last season and were 4th in December, second highest scorers, and should not be considered a push over. Is there a place on the bench for Ince?
