No!!!
We can't lose the great man, love his 'heart on the sleeve' reporting and sardonic wit, sound track to a section of my life :-(
Thank you Sir Martin and good luck :-)

"What the heck, thanks even to those individuals who have waited patiently each week for my column to appear so that they can relentlessly and ruthlessly denounce my opinions. As Oscar Wilde once observed, the only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about!"
Great stuff Martin, and happy times just being a fan.

Thanks for everything Smudge - the many many years of the Oatcake and in more recent years, the Sentinel column. I hope we will see this board continue and that you may even post your own thoughts on here occasionally - and on facebook where we "meet" from time to time.
Whatever happens be happy and enjoy the extra time you will have to spend with your family - you deserve it.

Smudge, thank you for being the voice of reason, even in the most trying of times. By and large I think you have reflected what most rational Stoke supporters were thinking & trying to see a positive route ahead. You will be missed.

Thanks Smudge, i enjoyed the the 'paper edition' oatcake from the start and it was staple part of my trips to the Vic and reading at the match or later in the week. Your match write ups were always similiar to my version of events. The newspaper column has also been a re affirming read thanks again. Good luck with just being a supporter and enjoying pre and post match opinions of the game/club.

I stopped reading his column years ago due it being full of contradictions. He'd say one thing one week and say the opposite the week later.

That's a shame Hackett - it stopped being full of contradictions the week after you stopped reading it! Ah well - too late to start reading it now to see if you agree with me!

On those that stuck their noses out, as well as the other two, what's happened to Toxic Avenger aka Rob Doolan? He's still on TWitter, but haven't seen him here since before lockdown.

Another excellent piece. Sound observations and an objective voice amongst all the reactionary, screaming hysteria will be missed.
Some of us could learn from Martin's words that it is possible to be a supporter and not a "happy clapper", objective and not a moaner, to enjoy being a part of Stoke City and be unashamedly proud of our fantastic and historic football club.

I stopped reading his column years ago due it being full of contradictions. He'd say one thing one week and say the opposite the week later. The staunch defence of Hughes followed by the next column calling for his head was a particular highlight. Good luck to him in the future though. He's done some brilliant SCFC fanbase stuff.

Come on Benj, this is right up your street. With Benji's mangled spelling it would have to be the Grauniad!😁 Have you seen The Sentinel recently? It reads like it's written by people whose first language isn't English (and who've also suffered serious brain injuries). Benjamin Bumnugget will be editor-in-chief within a few days of rocking up there

Supporting Stoke City is etched into the very fabric of my life. From a young boy smacking the ball against the garage pretending to be Biggins and Stein, to talking endlessly to my dear departed grandad about teams, tactics and our history, losing at Telford to thumping Bolton at Wembley and baiting Wenger relentlessly. The match day with my dad to reading the paper version of the Oatcake over and over. It’s always been there and although I’ve never met Martin Smith, he’s always been there- part of the fabric, the culture of my Stoke supporting life.
I salute you sir, all the best and we’ll all be with you when the good times return- and they most definitely will.
Cheers

I was gutted when the oatcake came to an end and I’m gutted that Martin’s no longer going to be writing his column. He has a unique ability to capture the thoughts, hopes and fears of so many of us. My only criticism is that the one time I had the honour to buy him a pint (and I can’t quite get my head around this) I found out that he prefers larger to bitter - unbelievable!!
