RedWhitenBlue for some reason it won't let me quote your post. Yes a double play is where two outs are made in one play just like you said. No problem on the terminology - you're learning Baseball and I've a lot to learn about football. (Real football, not American Football) I started playing Baseball at 7 yrs. old and later, was fortunate enough to get recruited and Baseball paid for my college all those years ago so I picked up quite a few things off some really good coaches.
Now your cricket? Holy smokes talk about terminology! I tried to figure it out a few years ago and all I got for my trouble was a sticky wicket!

I presume that you are referring to the Intentional Walk. They usually do it because they consider that particular batter too dangerous to pitch to. Most times it's because they are currently on a hot streak or hit for so much power that they are a continual home-run threat. They are literally so worried about that batter either hitting it out, or hitting it into a gap in the outfield (scoring someone else who is already on base) for an extra base hit that they would just as soon put him on first base as to take a chance pitching to him. Also putting someone on first often results in the probability of turning a double-play if the pitcher can get the next hitter to hit a ground ball (As opposed to the 2-run homer you referred to) I've also seen them walk someone just because of which side of the plate they hit from. (Example: Sometimes a left-handed pitcher will intentionally walk a right handed batter to GET to the next guy who is hitting left-handed) But it's usually out of concern for the "danger" that the hitter presents. And yes, because it's professional - I have seen it backfire, walk somebody just to have the next guy jack it out of the park for a 2-run homer. It's a managed risk. Kind of like a football player making a "cynical" tackle to stop a striker from getting into a shooting position. Too dangerous to let go. Excellent, thanks, forgive my ignorance on the terminology, I've only recently started watching bits of the odd game or two on my BT sport package. And a double play is where two outs are made in one play, presumably? Do they both have to be run out from a ground ball ie throw to one base for the first out then to another for the second? A double-play does not have to be two force outs as you’ve described. It can be any combination of a force out, tagging a player out, a player not tagging up on a caught fly ball, or a strikeout. Basically, a double play just means that two outs occurred in the same instance of a ball that was in play.

Thanks dirtclod and deadly.
I'm getting there, but sometimes the commentators rattle on about stuff and it just sounds like when you're on holiday abroad and the taxi driver's got the radio on!
Big fan of cricket too, clod, so if you need any cricket explaining, just ask! There are a fair few of us on the board who love our cricket and will be pleased to help out.
I was in a bar in NZ showing the cricket many years ago and got asked "Sir, could you explain the rules of this game" by a lovely American couple. Pretty sure that I lost them fairly quickly but it turned into a good evening! One of the joys of travelling, random meetings and conversations with strangers in far flung places.

Browns are 2 and 1. First time winning season in 6 years!!! Can we keep it up? Woof, woof. Browns need to give up on Mayfield for me. He just isn't going to be what they hope he will. They've got so much talent in that squad (Chubb, Hunt, Landry, OBJ, Hooper etc...) But Mayfield is a bust. People like Derek Carr & Teddy Bridgewater (Bog standard QBS) are way above him, and they haven't got half the talent in their teams. Give Case Keenum the job for this season, yeah he's bang average but he's much cheaper than Mayfield! Get him off the wage bill somehow & try & find a new long term QB. Just watched extended highlights of the Browns beating the Washington FT, thought Mayfield did alright. I have to admit though that Browns largely won because Washington imploded.

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man (or woman) that’s in the side that’s in goes out, and when he/she is out he/she comes in and the next man/woman goes in until he/she’s out. When they are all out, the side that’s out comes in and the side that’s been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men/women still in and not out. When a man/woman goes out to go in, the men/women who are out try to get them out, and when he/she is out he/she goes in and the next batter in goes out and goes in. There are two men/woman called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men/women who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men/women have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men/women have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game!

Cobham: You have my sympathy with the Pirates (But then again look at us, we're Stoke fans ffs!) I grew up just south of St. Louis, so lifelong Cardinals fan here.
Deadly: Yes I forgot about the line drive in the air double play. I even got to see a triple-play turned in college (My third baseman caught a line drive, stepped on 3rd "doubling off the runner" then whipped it to second also catching THAT guy off the base. I remember it taking some time to decide what we had all just seen to believe it, but neither runner made it back to the base in time - talk about embarrassing for them!
Hitting a baseball is one of the hardest skills to learn, it takes at least 100 practice "cuts" a day at live pitching to be able to do it consistently. I was a pitcher so my job was to make life difficult for hitters. I was a "junk-baller" instead of throwing 95 mph, I relied upon location and had 6 different pitches, curve ball, fork ball, slider, screw ball and 2 kinds of fastballs. My whole "scam" was to get you to hit the ball, but either pop it straight up, or hit it straight down into the ground. That way, I threw less pitches, kept the defense involved (I saw a lot of double-plays turned off ground balls) and could get out of innings quicker. This was taught to me by Galen McSpadden who pitched for the San Diego Padres for several years. He also taught me his signature pitch, the forkball. (A nasty, nasty pitch) This pitch came in to the plate looking like a fastball, then it would just "die" at the plate and drop straight down.
Now....hitting a cricket ball that comes flying in at all angles and often on the bounce? I don't know how you EVER learn that, other than self-preservation.

Enjoy a bet on the old NFL, not that I’m any good. Usually just £10 singles on an even money chance. Recorded my first loss of the weekend with the Jets last night (cheers Sam Darnold) but got the Bengals -3.5 and Eagles +7 over the weekend both even money.

Slider. The topper spinner looking for LBWs Knuckle ball. When the quick bowlers release the ball from the knuckle rather than the finger tips in order to disguise a reduced pace delivery. Cross seam. Encourages the ball to grip so the bounce is slower. Off cutter. Run the fingers down the side of the ball on release in order to disguise speed and alter the angle off the pitch.

I hear you steakandchips!
Redwhitenblue: The forkball I threw - easiest way to describe it...make a vee sign with your index and middle finger (from what I understand every Englishman can make a vee! LOL) Then hook those two fingers over the top of the ball. Then you throw it like normal - the slightly backward spin causes it to sink eventually. Curveball is done by introducing either a top or side spin on the ball just as you release it, causing it to "bend like Beckham" hopefully. The two fastballs would break opposite ways all I did was grip it differently when throwing it. Screwball was the hardest - same as a curveball, only you make it curve the opposite way. I am lefthanded so my screwball would break left and my curve would break right. Slider was as hartshillbadger described it. One of my fastballs actually rose a little as it reached the plate. The other was a off-cutter as once again, hartshillbadger described. I could throw it hard enough that I didn't lose any velocity.
And the commentary - yeah they act like they have to fill every second with sound....

Well, DC, Allen did it again for you.
Putting him in your fantasy team seems inspired given his fairly modest stats the previous 2 seasons.
Always thought he was a decent QB being let down by his offensive line. This season he seems to have so much time he can pick secondaries apart whether they're in man-to-man or zone.
So you've effectively not just got Allen in your fantasy team, you've got a much-improved Bills OL without having to select them or pay for them. Now that's smart.
Wasn't just Allen & the OL, though - the whole Bills team did very well, I thought. Definitely worth more than a 7 point victory.
Pats @ Chiefs tonight. (And I thought it was on last night so inadvertantly recorded the Bills - LV game, grrrr !)
Think the whole game will rest on Mahomes & whether the Pats' pass rush can get to him quickly enough to hurry him into interceptions. Expect another high-scoring game (with both defences getting a lot of yards/points). Chiefs to win by less than 7 points for me, sadly.
So whilst the Bills steamroller trundles along, Pats are looking vulnerable. Which will all change when the Pats do the double over the Bills (as usual )

Regarding the Baseball Infield Fly Rule: When there's less than 2 outs and when first and second, or first, second, and third bases are occupied and a pop fly is hit (In FAIR territory) that an infielder can catch with ordinary effort according to the umpire's judgement, (Can't be halfway out in the outfield) - it's an automatic out. (It's basically a penalty for hitting a pop-out with runners on and less than 2 outs)
Minnesota Twins not winning in the post-season: It's a recent-years "curse" similar to the one the Cubs used to have where they could GET to the World Series but never win it. This year was particularly odd because one could argue that the Minnesota Twins were the best team in baseball in the regular season. They are a good team and I wouldn't be surprised if they "break the curse" soon.
Yes Cobham, the Padres are still in - they eliminated my Cardinals.
