I find this flag-voting business quite strange. Why Penkhull? Did Penkhull have to be nominated by someone or are all flags given a go? Why does the Penkhull flag represent the whole of Stoke-on-Trent? Are there other local flags? Newcastle-under-Lyme doesn't seem to have one. I know it's only a bit of fun from a flag charity, but I'm interested to learn more. www.flaginstitute.org/wp/flags/penkhull-flag/

The Shelton flag would have won it but ‘The Thing’ and ‘Shelbooth’ being scrawled on the bottom of it ruined our chances.

Shelbooth might need explaining for our younger viewers Mr Lavin! In the late 60's / early 1970's it was quite common for various skinhead groups to have their own names e.g. Hanley mods, Smallthorne Clampets etc who would scrap each other at football matches, pubs and particularly at the Kingpin Stoke on a Saturday night. I seem to remember Trent Vale had a particularly hard 'crew'. Anyway, there weren't quite enough wide boys/wise guys from Shelton or Stoke to make a possee so they took the decision to form a coalition of Shelton (Shel) and Stoke/Boothen area (booth) A bit like the Tories and Ulster unionists joining up to make sure Boris stayed in power although Shelbooth seem to have been left out of the history books?

Never heard of Shelbooth. "But", as Shanks said to Don Howe, "I've heard of the Clayton Rivers". And don't forget the Haregate Mafia from Leek.

Never knew the 'Shelbooth' story.
Pretty sure 'The Thing' graffiti was down to a kid I went to VI Form college in Fenton Manor, Justin Heath, I guess there's a statute of limitations on that kind of thing... If not soz Justin....
