There are a few Stoke players that SHOULD have release clauses in their contracts, ones which state: "if you turn out to be a complete tosser the club can release you without paying up your over inflated contract"!! Other than that they seem to be a backlash / safe guard against Bosman, protecting clubs from losing assets too cheaply when players run down their contracts...some, like Messi's do seem ridiculous

It's written into every contract in Spain, not sure why when they often are stupidly high. Not sure they're as common in England or the rest of the world, unless they're relegation clauses like Shaq had.

If anything, in england atleast, a release clause benefits the player. As once a certain figure is offered the club must accept and the player can leave. The idea is to settle on a fee the club would be ok to accept, then both parties are happy. In Spain it’s a little different as all contracts must have a release fee, so they’re usually obscene figures and players tend to move for much less than their release fee.
