For the next ten years I want our local leadership/council to give there heads a wobble and identify which of our towns they’re going to call our city center (Hanley) and get on with it instead of a half arsed effort, put some green space/escape space in the town such as by the old bus station. Make Hanley a destination town with bars and eateries that are diverse, maybe introduce street food as a regular thing, and put them in an area instead of spread all over. Whilst this is ongoing spread the wealth amongst the other towns, develop what they already have , embrace there history. That dude from the sentinel was on radio the other day saying what great buildings they have in boslem and how they are criminally underused, make a town like that a go to for ceramic art etc. Put someone like valentine clays in there that can run some sort of hands on experience and encourage ameture potters to get in there. Bring people in, make stoke a town that embraces its links to the nearby uni....... what I’m trying to say is try shit instead of giving us a city that will be all right when it’s finished. A phrase I’ve heard for 38 years Fuck all chance of any of that happening. fuck all chance of anything happening now Covid has bankrupted is. But we can all dream

On a related note, any good 2nd hand bookshops locally/any charity shops with a decent stock? Been in a few in Hanley and they weren't great. Likewise. I get books from the library or charity shops, both currently unavailable. I'm out in the country where lots of village phone boxes have a motley selection - but Abacas Books in Milton is open with good stock at fair prices. Cheers. Have seen those phone box efforts at home and abroad and its always good to see, though Id be skeptical about how much turnover of books they actually see. Will check out Abacas as have been through Milton several times, but never heard of it. These places need to be supported.

Went into Newcastle yesterday for a few pints. Not been for a couple of years and my god I won’t be going back, can’t believe how downhill it’s gone. Went into Wetherspoons at 3 and it was like a match day pub. Went Yates’ and there was a bloke walking around with his top off threatening people with a golf club. Saw a female Monkey dust addict being all sweary and aggressive to a group of around 6 kids who were no older than about 12. Went Bulls head where said monkey duster came in and abused everyone in there saying she was going to burn the pub down. Went Blackfriar where there was a bloke going around telling everyone he had Coronavirus then was coughing and spitting everywhere when being wrestled out of the pub. There were 4 rough sleepers in the subway. Speaking of Subway there were 4 staff members stood in the doorway smoking. Christ what a state we’re in😬 You'll not get a job in the Tourist Office. 😁 Have been in all of those places bar Blackfriar I think, but pre Covid and wouldn't be near them (apart from Bull's Head, which was sound) in these difficult times. Covid has made me far more selective about where I drink, so any chain bar or one likely to attract wankers is automatically out. Its a handy filter I plan on keeping for more normal times, as I've drank in some unreconstructed dumps over the years (including every dump in Hanley you can imagine), and life's too short.

As an outsider looking in (from the inside now) it's not clear what they're actually trying to do.

Spode seem to be making a good go of improving Stoke town, fair play to them.
I think Stoke could thrive if it really pushed for that quirky, boutique style. With more places like the Sanctuary in Hartshill, and with nice cafes(not greasy spoon).
It requires firm direction from the council though...
In answer to the original question, there has been a noticable downturn in the last 10 years, but look who's been in power for those 10. A lot of it will be the increase in poverty in the area because of the government's actions or inactions.
Who can blame a person on minimum wage, buying cheap online when they have very little disposable income.
I'm still happy to live in the area as it's home, I would like to move to the Moorlands eventually though, some beautiful villages around there.

All makes sense to me but Concrete (Arch, as was) are bidding to provide homeless provision and looking to site it in Stoke town. We've all seen that work in Hanley through Brighter Futures and Stoke is bad enough as it is, this would tip it over the edge.

Stoke has a huge homelessness issue so those affected will have to live somewhere. I've no opinion on whether that somewhere should be Stoke, but if not there it'll be somewhere else locally. Improving how homeless services are delivered is one thing, but they're clearly needed locally.

Improving how homeless services are delivered is one thing, but they're clearly needed locally. It's the delivery that's the issue. To the organisation delivering it, it'll be just another contract that they staff with people on slightly higher than the minimum wage. In my experience the staff turnover of these organisations is getting higher as a result. You can earn as much on a checkout at Lidl.

Likewise. I get books from the library or charity shops, both currently unavailable. Will check out Abacas as have been through Milton several times, but never heard of it. These places need to be supported. My parents live in Milton, nice little place, opt for Bagnall though lovely place. There’s a nice feel about the place overall, a few pubs, nice curry house and it’s not rough which is important. If you need any information about Milton PM me as I grew up there.

Yet another example of the depths this city is sinking to yesterday. Just about to get in the car to go for a job interview to find all 4 tyres slashed. Along with another dozen or so cars in the street! What’s wrong with people?😡

Don’t know if they bought the story! There was a happy ending though. My mrs was so furious she insisted we go to the pub to “let off some steam”🤣
