Somebody start a ‘top Hanley DJ’ survey, I’ll start with a few.... Chris Williams (Top Rank) Phil Oliver (Antelope) Trevor M (The Place basement+ Fluid) Wilf (Leadbelly’s) Pete Bromley (Satchmo’s) I worked with Trevor Molloy for a good few years. Top bloke. Pete Bromley still holds the mantle of local legend and Stoke's walking house music compendium. He's like the fucking Rain Man of electronic music featuring syncopated rhythms. For those harking back to Valley's indie proposition earlier in the thread - Eddie Kerr is still going (rather amazingly) and is the Sugarmill's current resident. His Rosie's equivalent on a Monday night, Steve Tilley, still part owns the Sugarmill but is now a multi-millionare big-shot national promoter based in that London. And keeping on a similar indie-bent, can anyone remember Mal Robson of Monday Millionaires fame? He looked about 60 in my late 90s heyday so gawd knows if he's still alive, let alone spinning the biscuits.

According to today's Sentinel intu want Lidl to move in. Which kind of reinforces the fact that Hanley's a bit shit. Saw that🤦🏻♂️ Mind you, every shopping centre you go in in Germany has one and seems to increase footfall. It’s just a bit shit isn’t it, needs more big names and especially independent shops. Saying that I’ve heard the rent is so extortionate no one will touch it with a barge pole. Can't imagine it fits in with Lidl's ethos of cheap low-maintenance buildings with free parking, just off a ring road. I'll be surprised if they take this offer.

Monday- underground Wednesday- Gatsbys Thursday- Revs castle Friday- Sugar Mill Saturday- Satchmoes/Underground

Gatsbys - there was more beak in that place than in Tony Montana's mansion 😂 Was that the one in Castle across from Yates’? That’s the one. I was 17/18 and used to finish my shift at Sainsbury’s at 11 and head straight there. Cracking night out.

Bit cheeky of the 'Mill to ask for funds from the public in the way of crowdfunders when it's seemingly got so much dosh behind it, no?

Like a lot of venues up and down the country, The Sugarmill is in dire straits at the moment as it cannot generate any income to pay its obligations such as rent etc. I'm told staff are currently furloughed and still getting a wage (but that won't last forever) and they have received some emergency funding from both the government and Arts Council England that should see them survive until October at least. Anything after that though and it could be curtains for what in my opinion, is the best small venue in the UK. The crowdfunder they did was done as part of The Music Venue Trust's national campaign that was participated in by 500+ venues and was done months before these venues had any inkling that they would get any support from the government

Anyone remember The Locker Room?😬 What was that like? I was only 12 or 13 when it was opened. I think it was flattened and the Hilton hotel is now on its site.

Don't forget Jaxx opposite The Place Yes. I had a 'leaving do' there 👊 Also - Regime's - moody as f£%k at times. Left Bank was quality. A schoolmate of mine DJ'd there. Heavily populated by Stoke lads.

Anyone remember The Locker Room?😬 What was that like? I was only 12 or 13 when it was opened. I think it was flattened and the Hilton hotel is now on its site. The Locker Room was formerly Liberties/Regimes wasnt it (back in my day lol - I was 18 in 1992) The sad lament of big clubs and 'going out' up to Hanley or Castle are sadly a sign of a few things 1 - Knobheads. everywhere. There have always been knobheads, looking for a fight or trouble, but back in those days and before they would be sorted out by other lads or bouncers Nowadays they are off their faces and you are as likely to be stabbed to death over a spilt drink by some moody steroid filled type who dont give a shit about consequence. Thats no fun for a start spending your evening not trying to get twatted 2 - Cost. Beer used to be cheap, places like Manhattan where you could a pint and 2 shots for about £3 (memories of drinking cider with 2 Taboos in (disgusting lol)), clubs were a fiver to get in, a taxi back to your town would cost £10-£15 between 4 of you. Nowadays its £4, £5, £6 a drink if you are lucky, a taxi back to Biddulph for example is about £25 from Hanley at night - no idea how much clubs charge to get in with extortionate drink prices. 3 - Drugs. Lots of them. Again they have always been there, but seem far more prevalent and cheap now - but stories from places like Fluid etc with folk being syringed, roofied, spiked etc are scary, as well as the monkey dust folk wandering the streets and the menacing dealers on every street corner 4 - Police. Back int'day there was always a presence around the city centre on a Thurs-Sat night, checking in on revellers, dealing with trouble, engaging with people. Nowadays the first emergency service you are likely to see is an ambulance. Lots of other economic reasons and preferences - Hanley is pretty much unrecognisable nowadays as an absolute shithole, boarded up shops and pubs/clubs, and a sinister atmosphere all around it. Castle is the same - I took my lads to the mini golf under the cinema (the old market), we came out at night, the marketplace was full of teenagers all in black behaving like morons, and pissed people looking for a fight Manchester sometimes isnt much better near the station or at Xmas markets time of year, but for the sake of a £10 return on the train from Congleton, its a far better day/night out, loads of different pubs and activities to do, a scene for everybody whether dance, rock, karoake, entertainment and food - we have our team works Xmas party there every year in December, its always a cracking day out, and even after a day on the lash and a train its probably cheaper than a night out in Hanley!

We’ve done it for years jumped a train to Manchester or Birmingham on a Saturday morning for a day and night out. Stations heaving with people and you’ll always recognise people from Stoke in the pubs/restaurants where you go. Not a chance we’d ever contemplate stepping foot in Hanley.

Mad isnt it - my work colleagues (who are primarily Manc/Stockport/Wilmslow based) are always amazed that I bump into people I know regularly when we are out on the town in Manc! That said, my wife and kids marvel at the fact we can go anywhere in the world on holiday and I will spot someone I know lol (the joys of playing Sunday football and local cricket for 20+ years, running kids teams in both for 10+, living in pubs until 18, Stoke, and just generally getting involved in local stuff!)

Imagine visiting Stoke as an out of towner for a day out, getting off at the train station, getting a bus up the hill to Hanley and then the first thing you see as you leave the bus depot is the wasteland and resident dustheads opposite.
