Chico's...filthy dump but welcoming all the same Chico's was the best club by a mile for me. Far more relaxed atmosphere than anywhere else, and certainly the best music! Yes but stand still too long and your feet stuck to the carpet

No checked shirts or labels- smart trousers and shoes only. That's one thing I do prefer now- I can go out in jeans, trainers and a polo.
Plus women seemed to make more effort then. Barely a tattoo in sight and nice dresses 👌

The Freetown;Leadbelly's;Evergreens (Cobridge,) Left bank, happy days... The Freetown... was a money laundering front for some dodgy persons - the owner got bumped off for a gambling debt had some cracking bands on but they didn't advertise had a chat with Jah Wobble in there about 71 & 72 semi finals, he 's a Spurs fan & no one else wanted to talk football with him brilliant musician & decent chap door staff were N40 I was probably the only person in there who wasn't up to no good Chico's...filthy dump but welcoming all the same Saw Havana 3am there, because it was Paul Simonon’s band. I also saw a band called Wolfsbane, one of those great new hopes for British hard rock that never quite made it. This would be circa 1990.

Wolfsbane were lousy but their singer ended up in Iron Maiden for a couple of years.. used to drink in the Black Lion, Albion, Smithfield when lived there in early 90s and often in Valentino’s, the Place and Chico’s ( latter I loved actually) for several years. Hello “Patricia from Fenton” if you’re reading this Now there’s a story for another time lol

Sunday night in Fluid was full of people who'd been The Void the night before on a comedown and trying to use the rest of their drugs 😁 The place you're on about- I remember it being Aruba but I think that was more a 00s thing- can't remember what it was in the 90s.

Random memories:
Getting into Hanley for daytime shopping/work and spotting that month's Golden poster.
Listening to records in Global Grooves and trying to hum a tune to Pete Bromley as there was no such thing as Shazam.
Being able to listen to CDs in HMV before you bought them (as obviously no internet).
The little shopping centres where Wetherspoons and TK Maxx are now.
Videoworld.
The chocolate vodka craze.
Great days 😎

Life After Dark is a book about British nightlife written by an ex-D J Dave Haslam. Happy to say Stoke/Hanley features in the book quite a few times. The range of nightlife we enjoyed in the 60’s through to the 00’s was quite simply ridiculously good. TOP artistes at the Place, the Top Rank, Baileys and the Steam Machine included many who’d now be considered A listers. If you think just of The Void and dance music you’re talking Judge Jules, Carl Cox, Boy George etc Then you’ve got the Northern Soul connection (via The Torch, Tunstall) which had people from all over the North and the Midlands visiting. There was a lot of negative, cynical people who didn’t back the council’s efforts to gain support for a medium size arena where the old bus station is (for multiple usage) but their argument was always: if places like Derby and Hull could sustain one then so could we?

Used to be great in Millionaires, Rosie's and Flackets, always called in Yates, Pig and Truffle too before either going The Place or Valentino's on a night out.

Never went in but remember the bikes in the window. I haven't been up Hanley for ages, I don't even know if it's still there.

Yeh fully glass fronted. Was bigger than it looked from outside That is something like Aruba isn't it? Later than 90's I thought for that place. We used to go Valentino's after going Flackets but we used to go out the back and turn right at the end where the Foyer is. Walkabout wasn't there until after 90's.

Yes it was called Aruba in the early 2000s but can’t for the life of me remember what it was before. I remember it stood empty for a good while before Aruba. It’s doing me head in now trying to think of it🤦🏻♂️

What was this pub called? Used to have a rate mancy pint of Carling for a quid but had a proper mint jukebox. Conna for the life of me remember what it was called! From what I remember it was called Heaths and Bar 105👍🏻 I'm trying to picture that one from the route. Where was the Dew drop Inn, used to go past it on the bus, never went in but always remembered it.
