Inexplicably found myself in Hanley the other week and most of the bars are boarded up. It was mint in the 90’s early 00’s. What would we say are the main reasons for the downturn in nightlife do we think?

What would we say are the main reasons for the downturn in nightlife do we think? People going out of the area? A mate of mine's a DJ and he said Leek was rammed regularly pre-Covid. Loads of new craft beer places opening up and people with different accents who seemed to have come from beyond North Staffs milling about.

What was this pub called? Used to have a rate mancy pint of Carling for a quid but had a proper mint jukebox. Conna for the life of me remember what it was called!

What would we say are the main reasons for the downturn in nightlife do we think? I read another Way We Were article from a couple of years back suggesting that revellers were leaning more towards the bar scene rather than big clubs, and that's why places like Valentino's and The Place shut down. But even now, the bar scene in Hanley is rubbish. It's not just Hanley either. Newcastle used to be a fab night out, great venues like Time & Space, The Cube and Metropolis all gone. A night out would always start with a few jars at The Black Friar, Edwards/Brassingtons or Revolution. 'Castle's nightlife is almost non-existent in comparison to its heyday.

Hanley late 90s early 2000s was a good night , a few drops in cheap seats then down toward millionaires or trinity’s before you talked vallys or the place. Many happy nights, I think maybe the cost of bing out and having a few killed a lot of Hanley but also the pathetic failure to embrace changing habits, look at Chester/ Liverpool / Manchester etc. There bars etc are as busy in the afternoon as Hanley was at night. There’s pubs around stoke on Trent that will do more money of a weekend afternoon than any night. This sort of drinking with ‘lighter’ entertainment just isn’t available up town. A pint of piss and a DJ blasting whatever garbage at 4pm is the best you will get..

I much prefer a pint in the day myself now (before the lockdown), hop on a train and get out of Stoke. Hopefully bringing back the train to Leek will come to fruition. Hanley's ok for a midweek curry night when you only need a couple of pubs but as a full night out? Forget it- and I'm not convinced there's enough down Piccadilly either, unless you're talking daytime.

The Freetown;Leadbelly's;Evergreens (Cobridge,) Left bank, happy days... The Freetown... was a money laundering front for some dodgy persons - the owner got bumped off for a gambling debt had some cracking bands on but they didn't advertise had a chat with Jah Wobble in there about 71 & 72 semi finals, he 's a Spurs fan & no one else wanted to talk football with him brilliant musician & decent chap door staff were N40 I was probably the only person in there who wasn't up to no good Chico's...filthy dump but welcoming all the same

Does anyone else remember watching early 90's Dance Group 'Cappella' at Valentino's? That was a class night No but I remember Candy Flip at The Place 👀 saw the lead singer of Candy Flip go round FreeTown at the end of the night (which would be 3 or 4 AM) drinking all the dregs from as many remaining glasses that he could classy.

That hipster place on the other side of the road sells beer that is far too hoppy is still there isn't it? Not too bad in there.

Chico's...filthy dump but welcoming all the same Chico's was the best club by a mile for me. Far more relaxed atmosphere than anywhere else, and certainly the best music!

In Newcastle it would have thrived.

Maybe so but even now 'castle is like Fremont Street in Vegas compared to Hanley, especially if you're into craft beer/real ale. Plus you've got Hartshill up the road.
