OK its slow news day!!!
the post by our friend billc on the hospital ward got me thinking, and its probably been done before but........
Top 5 games of all time with any anecdotes thrown in. Games attended that stick in the memory the most! Sorry that most of mine are of an era!!! Really difficult to choose but here we go!!!
1. Stoke 5-0 Arsenal
thrashing of the Champions especially Alan Bloor's rasping shot in the roof of the net that took it to the 'taking the p***' territory one of my first games so it sticks in the memory, I remember thinking "is it like this every week"?
2. Stoke 1-1 Liverpool
Alan Hudson's debut. It was like a revolution in Stoke City football. Difficult to describe the impact it had on me. Bill Shankley described it as the best debut he had seen I think. What a player!!!!
3. Stoke 2-1 Chelsea
League Cup Final. Was it a dream! Just a fabulous day out from start to finish, and all our heroes getting their just rewards.
4. Stoke 1-1 Ajax
I had never seen football played like Ajax played football. European football at the Victoria Ground! Incredible team Ajax, yet we were also bloody good!!! Proof that we could mix it with the elite.
5. Stoke 3-2 Aston Villa
Back in the Prem, first home game after years in the wilderness, the loss at Bolton was a real wake up call that it was going to be bloody difficult if not impossible. Fuller's piece of magic, Rory's rocket throw in, last min winning goal. Fairytale stuff. There was a real spirit in that team.

Stoke 5-0 Arsenal. Stoke 3-2 Leeds. Stoke 3-2 WHU (LC semi final). Stoke 5-0 Bolton (FA Cup semi final). And no idea of the year or the score, but Stoke V Fulham when Best played for Fulham. I saw him play for Man U, but in this game, even with him unfit and probably past it, Best was (with the possible exception of Banks) the greatest player I have seen live. His performance was staggering - worth at least five of every other player on the pitch.
Also agree with Spitthedog - the first Prem game was amazing. Remember the Ajax game too.

Looking forward to Old Stokie Blackburn Olympic FC 1 Stoke Ramblers 3 Would love to have seen the Ajax game. The Villa 3-2 was a rush as was the Chelsea 3-2. One of the earliest games I remember was a 1-1 top of the table game v Palace. Sammy Irvine for us, a great game and Gerry Murphy lobbed Roger Jones with a great goal for them. I think because the first big game I saw as a kid. I think was 1st v second and we had a great side forming. Bolton at Wembley an obvious one. It felt like we'd won the cup Going to go for an odd one,1-0 loss to Coventry in the FA Cup. Atmosphere was incredible, saw a Cov fan get arrested for punching a horse and sell his ticket as he was being led away by the police with his hands behind his back. Are far greater ones , 6 v Liverpool etc but different games stick with you

I'd go for all of them apart from the Ajax game which I didn't go to; so I'd replace it with the demolition of Bolton in the FA Cup semi final......Or possibly the League Cup semi against West Ham at old Trafford

I can't argue with any of the above suggestions but perhaps the most entertaining game of football that I've ever seen was Stoke 4 Luton 4 in 1982.
Peter Fox was sent off when we were 2-1 up for handling the ball outside the box, as a consequence of what was still the relatively new "professional foul" rule. George Berry had scored both the goals and had been assisted for both by Mark Chamberlain, the second with an unbelievable cross.
Richie Barker decided to put Carl Beeston in goal but then changed his mind at half-time and put Derek Parkin in goal instead, which was just as well becasue Beeston then scored our third!
Luton took the lead for the first time to go 3-4 ahead and it looked all over before Brendan O'Callaghan scored a great goal with a shot from outisde the penalty area to equalise.
Luton then got a penalty in the final moments to win it but David Moss hit the post and the rest is history.
A quite incredible game of football!

Without looking at other responses, and only games I've been at... - Wembley semi, obvious reasons - Autoglass 1. So many flashbulb memories burned into my brain by the dazzling sunshine of that day, not least TGO's thunderbolt rippling the net up the other end of the ground - Gillingham away. The searing injustice, solemnly singing "we're proud of you" in the drizzle at the final whistle, the bastard long drive home through the night in the dark and rain - I hesitate to include such a vile experience but, well, it's memorable - the Man City relegation game. ugh. - Coventry FA Cup '87. I was a little kid, it was all a blur of Brian Kilkline's hair. I remember my un comprehending child's brain thinking the result was so unfair that the FA would have no option but to replay the game. Rather depressingly most of the memories that sprang to my mind when I brainstormed it were negative

I am surprised no one has mentioned the return of Stan Matthews to Stoke in 1961. We beat Huddersfield 3-0 I think. Of more significance than the score was probably the fact that the attendance was about 36K which was nearly 4 times the attendance at our previous home game. We got promoted 2 years later and I doubt that would have happened without the stimulus of Stan's return.

Stoke 3-0 Peterborough (13/04/94) My first game. Sat on one of those red railings as I was too small to just stand. It was an evening game and very exciting for a 7 year old.
Stoke 2-1 Bristol City My only game at the old Wembley. I couldn’t believe how old and shabby the place looked but it was Wembley and it was massive compared to the Vic or Brit and at the time. Standing on my stool with everyone else doing the same to see us lift the shield while my poor mum was too scared to stand on one so missed it!
Cardiff 1-2 Stoke, play-off 2nd leg I watched this game at the Brit and remember being incredibly nervous throughout. I remember asking the kind man next to me how long left over and over in extra time and him rubbing my head at full time before I went onto the pitch for the first time.
Stoke 0-0 Leicester The second time I went onto the pitch. What an incredible day. Premier League had just been a dream for years especially with us being nowhere near it (bar the Leicester playoffs loss) in my young life.
Stoke 5-0 Bolton My favourite game and we will probably have to win the Cup or do a Leicester to better it. The atmosphere was brilliant and easy to maintain with the performance on the pitch. The Delilah and even We’ll Be With You (which I usually cringe at) after the game we’re brilliant.
Honourable mentions - Stoke 0-1 Everton for the most spine tingling Delilah I’d heard up until then, Stoke 2-0 Brentford when even I, the ultimate pessimist, was relaxed all game, and Stoke 2-1 Besiktas wow we were in the Europa League and their crowd were much different than anything I’d seen before.

Stoke 2 The Shit 1, Boxing Day 1984 - for younger viewers that season was known as the Holocaust season, easily the worst season the club has had in living memory but that game was fantastic. 1.0 down, blatant handball on the line (Duxbury?) ref didn't see it but linesman flagged. If he hadn't given it even with the fences honestly believe there would have a mass pitch invasion & a dead referee by the end of it. no red card for the handball in those days so still 11 v 11, a young Carl Saunders popped up with the winner at the (real) Boothen End 12 years old I thought it was brilliant, strongly suspect everyone else did too we didn't win again for several months... Stoke 2 The Shit 1 , Sept 1993 the Steino utter brilliant goals one in the league cup - don't let anyone bullshit you about their 'weakened team' either: Schmeichel, Irwin,Pallister,Dublin,Martin,Kancheslkis,Ferguson,McLair,Phelan,Robson,Hughes Stoke 2 The Shit 1 01 Feb 2014, Charlie Adam rocket, cracking goal, sweet victory Stoke 2 The Shit 0 Boxing Day 2015, Arnie screamer - this game should have been at least 5.0 Arnie should have had at least 3 himsen superb football from Stoke that made even the national media sit up Stoke 3 The Shit 1 'friendly' August 2003 Marc Goodfellow scored 2 & made Barthez look a complete tool (which of course he was)

Coventry 1 stoke 2 - promotion year. Lennies goal was the cue for a top mental. Barnsley 2 stoke 4 - MON first game. Like a party in the away end. Stoke 6 dippers 1 - steeevie g last game pmsl. Stoke 0 leicester 0 - the day we got promoted to the prem. Nervous game but the full time whistle and the en masse celebrations were astonishing. The town centre after was one massive piss up. Any win over the scum gooners - always celebrated with extra vigour.
Special mention for stoke 5 bolton 0 to get to our first fa cup final. An historic moment.

The first four were the seasons and the matches that stopped us becoming Notts County or Brentford and made us expect to be a top-flight team, to be disappointed and irritated when we were in a lower division. The fifth was just the best day there could have been. September 28 1961: Stoke 3-0 Huddersfield. Stan's back. Years of steady decline halted. 36,000 at the Vic, 7-game undefeated run lifts us to finish eighth. The worst winter since 1947, and unmatched since: Easter Monday, April 15 1963: Stoke 2-1 Sunderland. Freezing cold day, crucial win against close rivals for promotion. Eddie Clamp taking a throw-in had an opponent standing in front of him, intending to delay a quick throw; Eddie threw the ball right into the guy's face. May 11 1963: Chelsea 0-1 Stoke: Killer win at the home of our closest rivals, after two or three very poor results. Clamp, again. to the fore putting "tough guy" Harris in his place. May 18 1963: Stoke 2-0 Luton. Promotion to First Division clinched when 48-year-old Stanley Matthews runs 50 yards to slot the ball past the Luton goalie. February 23 1974: Stoke 3-2 Leeds. 2-0 down we come back to inflict their first defeat of the season. That night I have the last fight of my life, alongside my brother against a bunch of skinheads in the Rose and Crown, Shelton. We win. And, actually should be compulsory viewing for all under-35s: March 15 1975: Derby 1-2 Stoke. Just look at the staate of the pitch and wonder at the skill and guts of Salmons and HudsonandGreenhoff. This was the day when we began to believe we could win the league.

I'm glad someone has included this, I was so tempted and when I think about probably should be in my top 5 too It was so unexpected, given our terrible form, but was a momentous win against the likes of Hughes and Robson. 70 minutes we were 1-0 down and looked out of it , then 2 goals in 5 minutes Painter and Saunders cue absolute mental in Boothen
