He's such a Stoke legend in the making. I'm going to be really miffed if he gets poached. Really enjoyed the programme too.

Great viewing...thanks for the link.
We really do have ourselves a gem of a manager here, and one who I feel sure will want to build something of a legacy here before he moves on...
Here's hoping!

Excellent programme, I really enjoyed.
He has accumulated a lot of experience in many places and will have loads of contacts.
He seems to place great store in our ownership which could stand us in good stead if someone tries to tempt him away.
Clearly likes wide players; surprises me he has not got Ince playing on the left and crossing balls, but maybe he favours McClean in his best position.

the IFA must have seen something to keep faith after such a poor start to his managerial career. Probably what we are seeing now.

Interesting watch and shows he has a level of humility by asking his captain if he should step down when things were tough. Clearly had a good relationship with them and I think this must have been going on behind the scenes with our lot. As much as I dislike the attitude of many footballers to get themselves motivated, MON acts in a way where players want to play for him and that must be a huge part of the battle won to bring success. Really looking forward to next season.

the IFA must have seen something to keep faith after such a poor start to his managerial career. Probably what we are seeing now. Michael talks about being invited to interview by the IFA and he went along on a "nothing-to-lose" basis. Which is probably fair enough, it would be "good experience", as he said.
But I have it on good authority that there was another candidate who, if not quite a "shoo-in", was strong favourite for the job and rightly so, since he was a very credible candidate and the bookies' favourite.
But when Micheal rocked up, he absolutely aced the interview, with his preparation, research and preparation etc, which was on a whole different level from the other candidates.
As for keeping faith after a poor start, they may have spoken to senior players like Steven Davis, Aaron Hughes and Jonny Evans etc, who will all have backed him. And having been at nearly all those opening games, performances were genuinely (much) better than the results, where we had absolutely no luck anywhere.
That said, Michael was only on a low wage initially - later boosted considerably, incl bonuses - and apparently the decision to renew his contract was by no means a foregone conclusion.
Discussion were due in October 2013, after NI's last two World Cup qualifiers. They lost the first of those, 2-0 away to Azerbaijan - again we were robbed blind. The final one was away to Israel and we were 1-0 down until Steven Davis equalised mid-way through the second half. A fighting draw away to a then decent Israeli team wasn't a bad result, all things considered, but had we lost Michael possibly might have gone, the decision was that close!
How differently might things have turned out, both for NI and Stoke, had Davis not scored that goal!

He could have become our manager much earlier...NI's loss our gain.

On such fine margins are people's fate determined. I well remember on a pre 1970 WC tour in one match in Mexico Jell Astle nearly scored a certain goal but it was deliberately stopped by a defenders hand. Franny Lee missed the penalty and England were slated by the critics for not winning the match. There had been a media campaign for Ramsay to select Astle who was the outstanding striker in the late 60s and Ramsay took him on the tour . But Astle was dropped and didn't figure in the 1970 WC. It might have been so different for Astle had that defender not fouled and England won the match. Geoff Hurst tells a similar story of a goal he scored for West Ham that lead to West Ham winning the European Cuo Winners Cup, which he believes lead to his selection for the 66 World Cup squad. The rest they say is history.

Really good watch that... and who would have thought he played with Gazza in the early years! It's not difficult to see how players would want to give everything for him and that alone is such a huge part of potential success. We have a seriously good manager here, and a thoroughly likeable bloke on board, I hope he stays a Potter for many years to come. Not felt so positive for a very long-time folks

I didn't realise he'd played at such a high level during his career and (for some reason) just can't remember him as a player at all. I probably should have had a look at that stuff when he joined us, but I'd assumed he'd just been a League of Ireland player. Sorry Michael.
