Must admit I didn't know .Hopefully it's great news in as much as I've always loved Stoke playing with skilful wingers.Too young to see Mathews or Conroy (although I read all I could about our history as a kid )And then being lucky enough to see Chamberlain in his prime, (and spending all my youth trying to play on the wing and trying to cross the ball on the outside of the fullback like him).Neil Adams,Phil Heath,Peter Beigrie ,Lawrence ,Ethrington,Pennant, Arnie,Shq ECT ect.Now all we seem to have is Ince and he can't really be classed as a winger.A winger each side and a lump of a centre forward, Not too much to ask is it ?

I think we can find the lump of a forward without too much difficulty. Then its all on for the dream combination.

Before reading that I had absolutely no idea what career Michael O'Neil had in football. That's a great piece. Thank you. OS.

Linking up with Gazza at Newcastle: Jack Charlton at the time desperately tried to get Gascoigne to play for Ireland He said it never really looked like happening as he was getting too much media attention but Paul Scholes nearly did.

Didn't see so much of Michael in Scotland but i always thought him one of those players who started out as a winger both to utilise the natural pace of youth, but also to spare him the rough attention you get from CB's and Midfield destroyers if playing through the middle.
As he got older he relied more on trickery and intelligence than pure pace when playing wide, before eventually moving inside, as you say.
And forget the "next George Best" label, where he was merely No.31 in a series of 150 lol.
Rather i'd say that he was the best young local prospect of his year/class, but ultimately never quite fulfilled his promise, unlike eg his namesake Martin, who was similarly touted for the big time a generation earlier, and did go on to play at the very top level.
Bit like (ahem) Alex Ferguson, who was just about good enough to play for Rangers, but never played for Scotland, or broke through to the top level in England.

I can live with you not thinking of McClean as a winger. But that you have already forgotten Verlinden... And some will say we saw the birth of a new star winger named Josh Tymon last week, although some will insisst he shall always remain a useless fullback.

Mate Verlinden has a long way to go to be named in the same breath as my list of Stoke City wingers, I hope he makes it tho "GOD WILLING"

Ah, yes. Harry Burrows. A veritable tank. Loved to see Harry ploughing down the wing and through the mud at the old Vic ground. he was almost unstoppable, and got a shot like a cannon to end his runs with.

' Harry Burrows almost uprooted a post'
