I will be buying (all being well) a used motorhome in the next two weeks or so. Mrs Buzzb and I have been on about giving it a go for a few years so, now we are taking the plunge. Any tips, do's don'ts places to visit would be much appreciated. Gone for the motorhome over a camper so the Grandkids can jump in, once we have learned the ropes. I hope you get sorted mate, let us know how you get on. Update: So we bought it, took the plunge so to speak, we are complete novices! To look at it from the outside it certainly is no looker, in decent condition but just resembles a tank, big, sturdy not flashy at all. Go inside and its pretty immaculate for a vehicle that has pretty much stood (MOT and service apart) for 3 years. We had a habitation check done, electrics gas all good, but some damp around the main door which can be rectified for a few hundred quid so all in all we are happy. Spent the past 3 weeks timping, cleaning improving and personalising it and have booked a few days away in Wales in September. Having done all this work I can see how it can become a love / obsession, can't wait to get started, and from the experience of trying to book for September it seems every man and his dog are doing the same. Can't wait.

My brother has one for his Fiat Comanche and is 'road friendly' in terms of route finding and programmable and which is suited to your size of motorhome. If you already have one just ignore everything I just said !

In Scotland it's perfectly legal to put h up by a roadside that is not fenced off and kip the night. Best scenery in the world, best beaches, low crowds.

So here we are 6 weeks down the line, yes we took the plunge. We bought a 2003 Ace Roma Nouvelle, Fiat Ducato 2.8 from an elderly couple, they had, to be fair looked after it having owned it since 2007. First impressions were blimey, this is in good nick for its age, only done 22000 miles. We had a qualified ( if thats what they are called) caravan expert to check it over, electrics, gas, damp check etc, he told us that it probably needed £600 or so spending for various things, considering what we paid for it we agreed it was within our budget and its now ours. After committing to buy, having checked the MOT records on line I noticed it had only done 60 miles in 3 years! That was taking it for an annual service and MOT. I must admit I got a bit concerned but all is well as it turns out. With the tax, insurance, secure parking ( it aint being parked in Meir ) it adds up, and little things you don't notice when viewing are cropping up. Only minor stuff but it all adds up. So, anyone doing the same as us, as first time buyers, I advise you take a good few looks and do your homework on the costs I mentioned. So its ours, cleaned by Mrs Buzzb to within an inch of its life, jet washed new hub caps (can't afford alloys just yet) it certainly is no looker, a bit tank like actually but internally its the biz. Last Sunday was maiden voyage for us, deep dark Wales, well it was gorgeous weather actually, we did Conway, Porthmadog and Delamere Forest, our first impressions of campsites are good, immaculately clean shower blocks and bogs at each one. The freedom to move on to where ever you want is great. I can see how you get "the bug". I now want to spend all my time on it, and money to improve it, lots of doors have opened, I wished I had done this 20 years ago when I was alot fitter and in better health. Anyway, for anyone reading who is contemplating doing the same, do it!

Wolstanton Marsh was always popular with caravaners when I was a nipper.

I've thought about getting a camper van for a few years, but I'm edging more towards a small van or even car. Pop a couple of camping beds on top of a couple of strong storage boxes, get some window blackout things and job's a good 'un. I slept in my Corsa (passenger seat all the way back with a camping mattress on top) a couple of times during a 3-month trip around Scotland, and it was fine. There's also stuff like this and some suggested vehicles look almost as big as the VW T6: redcoteleisure.co.uk/removable-camper-conversion-kits/www.simplecampervans.com/
