If he's played in the right formation like he was today looks a good player. Excellent in the air, holds the ball up well and links play. Thought he was excellent today. Definately a good foil for the 3 behind him. Can we keep playing the formation and team out today for the rest of the season. Our best performences this season have been on the back of Campbell out wide and Vokes up front.

Plays well in this formation.
Seems to have come back off of lockdown wearing Sonic The Hedgehog's speed shoes, such is how much quicker and fitter he looks. Links up really well with Campbell to his right. I was a Vokes hater pre lockdown but we have to stay with 4-2-3-1 and he has to stay up front, definitely grown on me a bit.

He's got good pedigree, plus scored 8 could of been 9 today. Great team player potential.

He's a focal point and gives balance to the team, we look far better with him in the team even if he's having a quiet game. a more mobile version of him would be perfect.....

Like all big, slow target men, the key is having players around him.
4-4-2 is ideal for someone like Vokes- crosses aplenty and a strike partner to lay the ball off to. 4-2-3-1 is the other option that works well as there's always support from the 3 in behind.
4-3-3 though- forget it. The striker gets isolated in that system if they're someone like Vokes or someone who can't hold the ball up that well. You need top class players to make that system work.
I don't think it's a coincidence that Vokes has looked pretty good in the spells we've gone 4-2-3-1 and like something on Blackpool beach whenever we've played 4-3-3.

We played 433 against Barnsley and today, well at least first half today. Even MON calls it 433 and I reckon he would know! It's doing my absolute nut that everyone is calling it 4231. The difference is how the midfield shape up though. With Powell AND Clucas playing as CAMs, Powell right side, Clucas left side, both getting up in support and the wide men getting close too, we have been getting 4 around Vokes. Cousins lone central CDM. The shape of a 3 man midfield most certainly, but done the right way. Second half we went what I might call 4231, with Clucas deeper as a right side CDM, Cousins left side CDM and Powell more as a 10. Please don't make me come out with red lines on photos again.

So pleased to see this. Have pointed this out several times. As you say, a classic 4-3-3 with Powell and Clucas ahead of Cousins. Allows McClean or Campbell to get close to Vokes for long balls as we have cover in behind if their full backs break

Both hard working, cover a lot of ground, but forward thinking and can damage the opposition, in their different ways. Any of our other plodders trying to play those roles and we're a bit knackered.

If it means anything at all, he looked genuinely buzzing when Clucas scored, so yes he cares.

He looked fit and firing in pre-season then we didn't utilise him when the season started. Hopefully he can get a decent 'pre-season', whatever that will look like this year, and we'll get a full season out of him next year. He's more than decent at this level.

I still feel we need someone like him who can also work the channels moving forward.

Since the restart he has probably been out best player. He’s one of the few that has come back looking fitter. He was superb today
