A well deserved accolade for the lad.
In a week he's had a Beatles song named after him, 60 years after it was wrote and a squad number retired for him, almost 20 years before he retires.
...and people wonder why they think he's a special talent? This is almost David Blaine shit!

If they can convert him to a centre half and he turns into Booby Moore and wins our 2nd world cup, then it's a shrewd, prophetic move by Brum to retire the number 22.
But Brum are not known to shrewd or prophetic. Not in the slightest.

Tinpot club. A truly embarrassing gesture.
Christophe Dugarry saved them from relegation almost single handedly, and they didn’t retire his number.

I see these posts about him having an 'attitude' he is an incredible talent at his age, I don't see the attitude, I see the talent. Seems that a young man that was approached by a European giant is now a gobby lad now has an 'attitude' would that be the case if the lad was white? I dont think so, it would be pats on the back and a well done. He didn't ask for his shirt number to be retired, he just wanted to be able to advance his career like several English born players do now.

I certainly felt that we should retire the number 7 when we sold Stan Matthews to Blackpool. I was only 2 at the time but I was very mature for my age. But what shirt would TC have worn? In those days the jersey numbers were based on position on the pitch. 1: goalkeeper, 2: right back, etc. That system assumed all teams lined up in a 2-3-5 or similar minor variation, and survived for 100s of years.. It was dictated by the offside rule that required 2 defenders (right back and left back) plus the goalkeeper between the forwards and the goal. This was reduced to two defenders to increase the number of goals scored in the mid 1950’s and resulted in the introduction of the 4-2-4 formation, which was perfected by Brazil who won the 1958 and 1962 World Cups. The 4-2-4 system still used two wingers. Sir Alf introduced the wingerless 4-3-3 system in 1966 with great success. 4-4-2 became in vogue in the 1970s but the 1-12 player number persisted, even though it became a bit more difficult to work out who was playing where. The back four were always numbers 2,5,6 and 3. The centre forward was always number 9 the rest were less easily defined. The squad numbering system is a nasty American thing that crept into the game relatively recently, along with other annoyances such as “assists” and retiring players’ numbers. Watch for MVP to replace MOM, which is not gender neutral, unless they have WOM - I don’t know because I don’t follow the women’s game at the club level.

Hes just scored on his debut against the Dog & Duck.
Ballon D'or beckons.

Watch for MVP to replace MOM, which is not gender neutral, unless they have WOM - I don’t know because I don’t follow the women’s game at the club level. This is partially correct. The "always" only refers to conservative English clubs/ British international sides. On the continent numbers were given following the system in the 70s, so you'd have central defenders wearing 3 and 4, leftback wearing 5, midfielders 6-9, the main strikers wearing 10 and 11, or slight variations depending on the actual system. By and large it stayed until some time this century you would split midfielders intp 6s and 8s, and attacking midfielders became 10s, wingers 9 and 11, the solitary striker 9. The higher numbers partially came from the US, but already in the 80s you had Italian players, when the second striker couldn't get the beloved 9, he would get 18 or 81, with one player (can't recall who), having '8+1' sown into his jersey.

Pre-madonna with a shite attitude. Looks like a luxury player, does have a bit of skill but not someone I'd want in a relegation scrap. Where did this "pre-madonna" thing come from? People keep saying "pre-madonna". Is it another in-joke (like "jesus hates christ") that I'm unaware of?

As stated further down my spellchecker changed it from Primadonna. I still stick by that, the way he flapped his arms and his diva-like attitude towards his teammates when someone didn't get onto his overhit passes was embarrassing (hence the attitude comment). If the lad goes on to perform well against top tier opponents then fair enough. The way this has been dragged up is laughable though.

I know that this is mostly in jest, but his sale has probably done more for Birmingham FC than most individual players have done for a generation or so, especially given Covid times. While retiring the number is an odd move, he may well have saved a club for that amount.
