Another one of the World Cup winning team dies without a knighthood.
RIP Jack. Came to Gordon's funeral recently and was in fine form.

A hero in Ireland as well, tough no nonsense but very effective defender and manager. RIP. Great bloke, gentleman and player. The type of player we so badly need.

Been trying to dig this advert out from Youtube and finally found it. Always makes me laugh but now a bit sad given the players and managers on there we have lost. Probably the best pub team? Not half.

I liked Jack.
As a player he made the absolute maximum of the talent he had, was tough as old boots and a record of 70 goals in 629 games over 20 years is very impressive for proper "old fashioned" centre half. (As a kid on Longton Park, we would practice corners and if we could head it in from on the goal line call it a "Jack Charlton").
It is a shame that he has taken his "little black book" with him. I would have loved to have seen which players he had marked down for a good crunching next time they played.
I loved his interviews when he moved into management. No airs and graces or "media speak" just straight out with it. (As someone who has never been able to remember names I could sympathise with his struggles on that score and it added to the entertainment value)
It was very sad to see how frail he had become in recent years.
RIP Jack

Leeds have been battered this summer ...Charlton, Hunter and Cherry đ Wonder if he and Bobby spoke towards the end or they never made up? Think they lost Paul Madeley not too long back aswell fella Was up in Northumberland a couple of years back in Big Jacks manor. One of the locals told me he loved nothing more than to fish locally and always had time for a chat. A man of the people who never forgot his roots. RIP big fella

Went in to a bookshop in Bray Co. Wicklow in the 90s, where my in- laws live. Bit of a crowd in there, there was Jack doing a book signing. I heard his recognisable voice before I saw him. He was great with the people signing the books. He was one our legends , but he is also an adopted legend in Ireland, believe me, taking them to places theyâd never been before or since. RIP Jack.

Some wonderful stories today personal favourites
Players to manager when the last 16 game in the World Cup went to penalties
Whose taking them boss ?
Charlton
âyou got yourself into this mess you get yourselves out of it â
To cascarino as they walked round the stadium in New York in front of the massed Irish supper pre the Italy World Cup game
You do realise your the only Italian in the ground
If you havenât read Niall Quinnâs autobiography itâs the best football book Iâve ever read and the Charlton stuff is both hysterical and immense in its respect .

I didnât realize Norman âbites-yer-legsâ passed as well. Norm and Jack were the bedrock of the Leeds defence. I didnât feel they were dirty players, just hard as nails, like Bluto and Big Denis. Every successful team had two of those players. The dirty players were Billie Bremner and Johnnie Giles.
Big Jack got into trouble for announcing he kept a black book with the names of players he was going to even with before he retired. I donât know if he achieved his objective or named names.
RIP

RIP Jack, an "ordinary bloke" who happened to be good at football. Always happy to stop and talk and I'll always remember his face lighting up when I told him how much his support meant to us miners during the strike. Never forgot his roots. Respect.

It must have been in the late 70's or early 80's that Big Jack did a coaching program for TV.
He was teaching young kids the basic football skills.
In one particular show they were concentrating on heading the ball. One youngster (probably about a 10 year old) was not too keen on sticking his head on the ball. Jack promptly told him to "get stuck in, don't be like a fairy".
