I’m struggling to get on board with the lack of effort stuff. There was or two that didn’t but overall I didn’t see a team not trying. Butland Ince And maybe Clucas being the ones who I think you can level it at. Every bugger else tried didn’t they? It was just a classic case of a cobbled together side with 3/4 players who shouldn’t have been starting or were out of position (Clucas’ issue imo). No they were fucking rubbish. All of them.

On numerous occasions attacks down our right side ended with players in acres of space because we weren’t tracking. McClean unusually and Clucas were the worst offenders. Vokes worked hard as did Cousins but no-one bust a gut to go and support Vokes, Smith was the first full back to go past his winger. There was a total Lack of energy in the press compared to Wigan. Overall we didn’t run enough when we had the ball or press hard enough when we didnt. Wigan had 62% possession compared to 44% against Blackburn

It’s something that has been a feature of his game because he reacts to situation and doesn’t anticipate them. His tracking back is woeful. That team he put out isn’t going to press. Why start Vokes if you want a press?

Bang on.
There’s this weird idea that seems to have been ingrained into Stoke fans’ heads that whenever anything is going wrong it’s because the players “don’t want to play for the shirt”/“don’t have enough fight”/are “too lazy”. It’s possibly what having a decade of Pulis does to people. It’s why you see bollocks like “if we had a team of James McCleans/Joe Allens etc. we wouldn’t be in this mess”. It’s not new either. I was constantly hearing that we were getting relegated from the Prem because we didn’t have the fight. It wasn’t true then and it’s not true now.
We’re shite because we’re putting 11 one-paced players on the pitch who lack footballing talent. No identity to any of them. I couldn’t take one player who started last night and say “he’s in the team for his [...]”. If they had the lungs of Mo Farah and the mental toughness of a royal marine it would be no different. None of them have any standout attributes; they’re all clones of one another.
I can’t think of a single good team that doesn’t have a mixture/balance of different types of players. Where’s our pace? Where are our creative outlets? Where is our battling defensive mid? Our attacking fullbacks? We don’t have any of it. The lack of creativity and pace in our side was the main reason we were relegated imo. Since being relegated we’ve got rid of the tiny amount of creativity that remained and we’ve brought in various primarily British “Jack of all trades” to fill the entire team. I’d say we have a lot of players who are willing to work hard for the team.
The issue is hard work does not equal success. James McClean and Lee Gregory both work hard. They’re two of the worst players I’ve ever seen play for us. McClean is clearly very fit and willing to run around for the full 90 minutes. But he gets the ball, sticks his head down, runs down the outside and kicks the ball in the general direction of the box with no thought as to whether it’s a good option, almost always hitting the first man or missing everyone in any event. There are no positives to having an attacker that offers that. Would I take a skilful pacey winger that doesn’t run half as much as McClean? Absolutely.

There has been something wrong since the restart whether you want to term it lack of effort, lack of intensity, lack of commitment, lack of desire or laziness.
Almost all the daft free kicks we give away 25-35 yards from goal are where the player doesn't appear to want to put in that extra effort to get goal-side (or even alongside) the opponent and just makes a lazy tackle from the wrong side.
When did we last see a player make a lung busting run to get back to defend a breakaway?
When did a defender (or midfielder) suddenly appear from apparently nowhere to make a last gasp block or clearance?
On the first goal (ignoring the fiasco when the cross came in), once the player had gone on the overlap he had a free run of 20+ yards almost to the 6 yard box before anyone even made an attempt to try and close him down.
The number of times we let players get goal-side on the edge of the box where our closing down player runs past the player in possession when they are supposed to be trying to close them down is embarrassing.
On the third goal, Clucas was in a good position goal-side of the player who scored, but instead of trying to block the shot, he moved to intercept a pass that the player was never going to make.
Across the pitch we looked noticeably less fit, sharp, energetic or enthusiastic than Wigan last night.
All the players are extremely fit in general terms but at the level of professional sport the margins are very small and while I am sure our players all ticked the required boxes on the amount of training they did while the club was closed, how many of them can hand on heart say they trained with the required level of intensity or the intensity they would have shown if the manager had been there?
I don't see why all the above issues can't be fixed, but, they require the one thing we don't have which is time.
The fringe players now haven't kicked a ball in anger for over 3 months, so I can't see help coming from that direction.
I think we are just going to have to hope that some serious arse kicking from the management and coaching staff over the next couple of days can squeeze a bit extra out of the 16-18 players we are currently using.

Other teams when we press high up the pitch always seem to comfortably play their way out, yet when it is done to us, we just panic and launch it..

Other teams when we press high up the pitch always seem to comfortably play their way out, yet when it is done to us, we just panic and launch it.. And that comes from a mixture of things. No one in midfield shows for it and hasn’t since God knows when. Woods would try tbf. The targetman is generally pointless. And in Danny Batth you have one of the single most worse players I’ve seen with a ball at their feet. He’s not the only but he’s the worst. Add it all together and you get what we have.

Where did Clucas play as a no10? He played on the left side of a midfield 3 as I saw the game unfold. It was as basic a 4-3-3 system as you are likely to get last night. I don't know on Smith. I thought he was fine v Boro as well but maybe physically, he's not up to 2 games in 4 days. Those are the things we don't know but for a manager praised for the way in which is simplified things for the players pre-lockdown to now fall into the trap of complicating things unnecessarily, it seems a trifle odd don't you think? I'm pretty sure that there will be a team meeting today and hopefully no punches are pulled from players and manager alike. We are fast running out of time and we have to get a reaction and a result on Saturday. He was practically on the left wing last night I thought. He floated around not knowing where he was meant to be. And going from the last two games that seems to be the instruction. No. We’ve seen plenty of instances where something happens with a manager and they change for no good reason. Like against Boro why would you ever play McClean on the right? Like it just shouldn’t even come into your head. There is no excuse for it. After the Reading game the team selection was obvious but it just got worse. I can’t compute it. I'm pretty sure he's given things he's supposed to do in whatever position he is playing. The fact that he isn't doing it is more an indictment on him and how wank he is. The goals this season have masked how shit he is as a player. If he doesn't score he does nothing. He's invisible in whatever role he's asked to play in the main because he's crap. If he looks lost or like he doesn't know what he is doing it's probably because he's brain dead and doesn't know what he's doing most of the time. I struggle to decide who I dislike the most in our current team and that has been the case for some time. Clucas, Ince, Vokes, BMI, Edwards, Mclean, Gregory...can't stand any of them. Add Thompson to the list because he's shite as well. Another complete non-entity of a player. What attribute does he have apart from set piece delivery?

Pick a team to give us a shot at survival Dave. You can't include any of the loanees. I wouldn't have a fucking clue where to start mate. ? Smith, Shawcross, Collins, ? ? ? ? Powell, Mclean Campbell I'd go 4-2-3-1 just to get the best of the only decent footballer we have in Powell. Who fills the gaps of the ? is just a case of lucky dip. The options are unfathomable really. Maybe Diouf on the right? Or Campbell on the right, as he was at Huddersfield with Diouf up front. I really haven't a clue. Davies is shocking but can he really be worse than Butland right now? It's hard to believe he can be but he probably can. Can we play Bursik with him returning from Accrington on loan? Is he ready? Can he really be any worse than Butland and Davies? Who at left back? Ward was terrible but when BMI came on he was just as bad. Is Edwards so unfit or so much in the bad books that he couldn't play right back with Smith at left back. Smith has played left back before and filled a gap for Huddersfield there during their promotion season? What, realistically are our midfield options? I know someone who worked with Clucas when he was at Hull and he has always been adamant that his best position is DM and that coaches/managers get blinded by his ability to grab a goal and play him further forward, where in the main he gets lost. From what I've seen, that is an accurate summary of him but I get the impression Clucas thinks he's better than just doing a DM role for the good of the team. Will he sacrifice himself for the cause? Is Oakley-Booth any good? Who knows? One little cameo doesn't really give us any real clues and you have to worry given he can't get a game, 3 games back, given the shite we've watched. Does this give us a chance of surviving? Bursik/Blondie Edwards, Shawcross, Collins, Smith Clucas, Cousins/Oakley Booth Campbell, Powell, Mclean Diouf Could Oakley-Booth do a job in the no10 role, releasing Powell to play up front. Could Powell be the striker. He's mobile enough, physical enough and is decent enough in the air to do a better job of it than Vokes does? So many questions but sadly not many viable answers. Survive somehow, and then rip it all up and start again.

I'd pick Butland, Smith, Shawcross, Indi, Tymon, Oakley Booth, Cousins, Powell, Clucas, Campbell and Diouf, but God knows how I'd play them. Maybe a 4-3-1-2 of some sort? I know my left side might raise eyebrows but Bruno and Ryan know each other and might be able to get us by on experience. If not, Collins with Indi playing left back, but we've seen what happens there.

If that doesn't highlight that Stoke have something toxic inside it eating the club from within then I don't know what will convince people. Ill get slated for this but if yoos ask me the first thing they should do is get rid of Scholes. He is a big part of the problem. And little Jonny Coates needs to be fucked off as well as he has done piss all in 4 years. Rip it up and start again with proper football people in proper positions. All the money we have wasted over the last 5 years. If they had invested half of that pot into a director of football who actually understood the game we would be on our way to much much better things. Heads need to roll and they need to start rolling immediately.

Its always a tricky one with Scholes because it easy to say the performance on the pitch is down to the players. And I get it. Its hard to argue otherwise. However at some point surely we have to correlate 4 years of shit on the pitch with 4 years of little John and with Scholes being CEO. But what winds me up is how easily Scholes stays out of the firing line. They've tried countless managers and countless players on countless salaries and we are still shit. Time to start looking up the food chain if you ask me. They are too unaccountable. We need a proper director of football and a new plan drawing up quick. And I don't want either of those 2 doing it.

He's always wanted to play 4-3-3/4-5-1 since he came in dispite his waffle of research watching all the tapes etc etc, he saw this as his oportunity to do it again and the same thing has happened. Yeah I don’t get it. Cousins Clucas Campbell Powell McClean Diouf Campbell and Diouf switching. Not ideal but it’s sure as hell got more structure to it. I don't rate Diouf at all but it would be a lot better than what we're seeing now or keep Campbell up top and stick N'goy (another I don't rate ) if needs be, there's much better options for a ballanced as we can get side than what we've been seeing.

Only just logged on so not read the 3 nearly 4 pages. Like everybody else I am-bitterly pointed but would like to observe that in both our last two games since Lockdown our opponents have really pressed our back line whenever we gained possession, and not allowed us any time to build up or move foreward.

Where was McClean defending and bombing forward? Where were the 5 passes string together? I think Liam said Wigan made 20+ passes before the first goal, effort means fouling, winning second balls, stopping play, a bit of grit and physicality... They really really really did not try

I said second half v Hull that despite winning that half we looked nowhere near as good and I worried for the rest of the season He’s one of the worst for exposing the defence. And this bloody defence doesn't need any exposing. However it doesn't help your defending when you know the the keeper is not going to stop any meaningful strike on goal,it just doesn't. He needs fucking dropping end of.

Only just logged on so not read the 3 nearly 4 pages. Like everybody else I am-bitterly pointed but would like to observe that in both our last two games since Lockdown our opponents have really pressed our back line whenever we gained possession, and not allowed us any time to build up or move foreward. O'Neill without actually saying the direct words is intimating some aren't fit after lockdown Inexcusable
