You can certainly see what our intention is this evening - to sit back, try to close the game down and maybe nick a goal from a set piece. The problem is we lack any dynacism, quality and pace across the team, which, along with an unfamiliar team, low confidence, and a negative shape, could easily allow Wigan to press up on us and pin us back as we lack any outlets who can bring the ball out or hold it up in their half effectively, thus denying us any chance to get on the front foot apart from if we look to play percentages. I would have personally gambled with a 3-4-1-2
Lindsay Ryan Collins
Smith Cousins Clucas Jimmy
I would have gone with 3 at the back with Ryan as the stopper with Lindsay and Collins to bring the ball out. Would have gone with Smith and Jimmy as wing-backs as they can get forward, plus have the workrate to pin the full-back back, thus allowing the centre-half on that side to hold his position and force the winger out wide, with the opposite wing-back dropping in to create a back 4 behind the ball. Cousins to sit in front of the back 3 to break play up with Clucas slightly in front to bring the ball from deep. Lasse to play in the hole as he's full of running and has quality coming forward without having to worry about the defensive side of the game - I would be looking for him to run it and commit their centre-halves on the break, creating spaces for the front pair to exploit in behind, Gregory as a target man as he can play across the line, with his back to goal and presses well forcing their centre-halves to panic and have to resort to long balls which the back 3 would deal with or risk losing the ball high up, plus he's a nuisance who also can get in behind, with Tyrese playing right on his shoulder to play off any second ball, create an option in behind when Lasse can press up and also to press up alongside Gregory.
