Could a boycott kill Facebook?Or just more corporate posturing jumping on the latest bandwagon. On the one hand, there is no doubt (imo) that Facebook (and Twitter) have a serious problem with abuse - the fun and frolics on this forum are trivial compared to the bile spouted on those platforms. I wouldn’t miss either if they weren’t there. On the other hand, who gets to decide what is abusive. Seems folk find stuff they don’t like or agree with to be abusive. There is a worrying spectre of Big Brother hanging over us just now - and it’s not just lockdown Covid police.

A bit hypocritical I know but would it suddenly be closed down, I wouldnt miss one iota. Some of things people post are horrific and as you suggest above about 'Big Brother', I havent asked for them to be sent to me. It comes on something I see as 'suggested for you'......who suggested I want to watch this?????? As you scroll across it the film starts playing. It makes your blood boil sometimes. Then you read some of the comments…...WOW! Ive had a few run ins with posters on here admittedly and insults DO go back and forth but the venom on the messages attached to these films on FB are genuinely appalling. These twats wandering around filming someone get beat up and just standing there doing nothing !!!!! Then they post it to get 'likes'....fuckin scum the lot of them. I wonder what the parents have to say about it? It gets heated on here at times as we all know but surely they have moderators and content managers on facebook and the like??

I'm not adverse to ending social media. It's had nothing but a detrimental effect on everything.
Breeding ground for fake news, disinformation, hatred and extremism.

The Internet as a whole is a bit shit really. Totally disagree - it’s awesome. So much brilliant stuff. But there’s some amount of shite on it. My personal strategy is avoid the shite (the exception to that rule being the Oatcake!). Sometimes we need to remember we have (for now at least) the option not to engage.

I agree, it does seem to bring out the worst in a lot of people. I stick by thinking it's the easy anonymity mainly, but nevertheless, social media is full of precisely what you've said.

I tnink Facebook and Twitter and LinkedIN and Instagram are just building roads.
The drivers are the problem.
If you build a road is it your job to also police it?
I suppose it increasingly is. That's how pubs and bars work these days, you pay for your own security.
And the public authorities just close you down if there is too much trouble.

I follow a bunch of jockeys, trainers, race courses & such like, and I then have a constantly updated feed of non-runners, ground changes etc... It's like my own personalised racing news channel that I can access whenever I want/need. If you're someone who just follows a bunch of people like Carole Cadwalladr, Ash Sarkar & Owen Jones, and you spend all your time hurling abuse at Boris Johnson & Nigel Farage, then I'm guessing your Twitter experience will be somewhat different.

I deactivated my Facebook account on the weekend recently due to my news feed being a complete cesspit (mainly BLM stuff). To be fair much of this side of the message board has become the same but for some reason I keep coming back.

Yeah, it's a powerful tool if you want to track news and conversation on certain subjects. I rarely tweet but ended up creating a couple of different accounts, each specific to a topic or online community. Switching between handles helps to keep your interests, whether it be horse racing, football, medical, history, tech, politics etc. apart.

I only use LinkedIn occasionally. Another problem is so much communication is misunderstood due to illiteracy, ignorance, and preconceived and prejudiced ideas by the reader/listener to the communicator. For example it does not matter what Johnson or Corbyn said in the general election, many people were not prepared to listen, let alone try and understand properly. As the professor said in an old Elvis film " It was one thing for man to discover fire, but another matter to learn how to control it."

I stopped using facebook around the time of the EU referendum as it was clearly becoming a cess pit. I do still use twitter though, which you could argue is more of a cesspit but at least the muck on twitter is generated by peeople I don't know and I don't run the risk of offending people I have to meet by unfollowing them.
This thread is interesting re. social media and advertising:

To be fair much of this side of the message board has become the same but for some reason I keep coming back. I deleted my acount, I had a discussion with some blm types, nothing racist, I just pointed out that harping on about slavery was not good for them and maybe they move on. They didn't like it. They decided to hack my account and post a load of racist shot. I will never go back or support blm.

This thread is interesting re. social media and advertising: I stopped using Facebook in 2008 because I came to the conclusion that "this is a thing for cunts". I'm not saying that I'm some sort of socio-tech prophet* but the subsequent 12 years seems to have vindicated my stance. *I'm definitely a socio-tech prophet and I'm getting a cape and a hat made that says as much

I’ve never been on Facebook, my Mrs thinks it’s her duty to put everything everybody needs to know about me on her own Facebook. Had an Ill fated spell on Twitter where I “disagreed” with Gary Lineker. Apart from that The Oatcake is the only social media I’m on.

Maybe the art of conversation would return. I'm not just talking about with a stranger, go to any restaurant (way back when you could) and see how many families sit there all on their phones not talking and you just know they are doing that same thing at home as well. Sad.

I barely use Facey these days apart from a couple of non-political groups I post in- geeky stuff mainly.
I've never bothered with Twitter as I'd just get 'pulled down the rabbit hole' and end up challenging left wing hypocrisy, and I've spent enough time doing that on here and Facebook! My Twitter experience is limited to looking at links to it that other people load up (basically, the majority of Huddy's posting history apart from when he pops up and has one of his 'gammon' and 'alt-right' sprees, a bit like a malfunctioning Dalek 😎)
Instragram seems full of poseurs and I just don't get Snapchat, I think I'm too old to pop my cherry on that one. It just seems like something that pre-pubescent girls use to send photos of themselves with reindeer antlers on their head. Not for me. Can you send cock pictures?
On a (slightly) related note, is there a more annoying First World Problem than YouTube ads, especially when you're trying to listen to a playlist or video of an album which keeps getting interrupted with some bollocks about ebooks or some shit game like Candy Crush? Even the ad-blocker browsers have stopped filtering this crap out.
This is closely followed by the Google algorithm which means that if I read an article about JK Rowling, for instance, I then get daily articles about Harry Potter or JK on my newsfeed. Facebook's going the same way in this regard.
