NBCSN showing classic stages from the past 9 till 12 Eastern.
Was looking forward to it this morning only to find its Stage 1, 2014. What a treat, as I’m typing they are heading towards Newbiggin-by-the-Sea which is where my fathers relatives originated. My parents took me there when I was small and I didn’t understand a word anyone from there said to me for the week.
They sent me home with a book, A Basin full of Geordie.
Love some Jens Voigt. Shut up Legs, another great read.

I watched stage 7 of the "Wiggo" win yesterday I love it not just for the cycling but for the scenery too.

Missing the Tour de France this year. A true example of fitness and determination to win at all costs. And of course the serenity of it is great too in the mountain stages.

Love the TdF, the coverage is usually excellent, the scenery and points of interest add to the enjoyment and you can't help but feel a little sorry for whenever a lone breakaway rider gets caught 5k from the finish after being on his own for 90km or more!
Good quiz question if anyone ever does them...what traditionally does the rider who comes last in the entire race get 'awarded'?

I love watching cycling and have really missed watching all the Classics, Giro etc so far this year. The TDF is the highlight IMO as much for the fantastic scenery as it is for the racing. I do watch ITV4 coverage with Ned Boulting and David Millar from time to time (particularly for the evening highlights show), but during the live afternoon coverage I usually watch Eurosport with Carlton Kirby and Sean Kelly - some excellent off piste commentary, cookery recipes, and other totally unconnected anecdotes - brilliant !
I've been watching the old stages and particularly enjoyed the 2012 stage 7 to La Planche des Belles Filles which Chris Froome ahead of Cadell Evans and Bradley Wiggins, which put Wiggins into yellow. The sad thing is that I can remember watching the stage live - where has the time gone ?
This year's TDF is due to start 29th August in Nice and I'm really looking forward to it already !

Chris Froome has never won SPOTY despite winning TdF four times and going for a record equalling fifth. Alleged drugs cheat and well-known 'asthmatic' Sir Bradley Wiggins however has, as has Geraint Thomas...!

Froome has 4TdF wins and 3 other grand tour wins. Murray has 3 grand slam wins.

Don't start me on about SPOTY and Chris Froome - completely unfair why he hasn't won it IMO. Geraint Thomas wins the TDF once (I was really, really pleased that he did win) and the media were bigging him up for SPOTY almost as soon as he crossed the line in Paris.
Wiggins was fair enough as he had one hell of a year in 2012 with the Olympics following so soon after the TDF win, but why Froome has never won it is grossly unfair IMO.
I think Froome's missed any chance of SPOTY that he might have had after his injuries last year. There is also talk of a "breakdown in the relationship" with Dave Brailsford at Ineos as they won't guarantee him team leader status (they also have Bernal, Thomas, Carapaz, and several other younger, top riders who could all be leader) and Froome has been rumoured to be looking around at a mid season transfer to a team where he would be team leader for the TDF. Last I've seen was that he looked like he might be staying with Ineos this season but at the present time there is no guarantee he will even make the TDF line up. The Italian press are saying it's a matter of when not if he leaves Ineos, and the alleged front runners for his signature are Israel Start-Up Nation (!), and if he goes there I think he can kiss goodbye to any chance of winning the TDF or anything else. Bahrain McLaren were rumoured to be interested but they seem to have rubbished the story.

There have been loads of strange team names over the years
Omega Pharma Quickstep was always one of my favourites
Then there's
Circus Wanty Gobert Androni Giocattoli Sidermec EF Education First - Drapac p/b Cannondale
Further down the cycling ladder there are some really weird and wonderful concoctions for team names.

I always liked Movistar and was disappointed it's never pronounced Movie Star.
Here's Nairo Quintana surrounded by his Movie Star team - it's just a nice mental image!

You picked the one Movistar rider I really can't stand. I just can't do with Quintana. It'll be interesting to see how we performs now he's moved to Arkea Samsic.

At long last the TDF is due to start this Saturday in Nice - very nice too !
Ineos going without Froome (doing the Vuelta) or Thomas (doing the Giro), and putting their faith in Egan Bernal with Richard Carapaz as back up. They seem weaker this year, especially with Wout Poels having moved on, and losing both Rod Ellingworth and (very sadly) Nico Portal from the "management".
Betting has Primoz Roglic as favourite to win, followed by Bernal, Pinot, and Dumoulin. Alaphillipe or Bardet to win the KOM, and surprise, surprise, Peter Sagan to win the points jersey for the zillionth time.
Can't wait !

Just listening to Dave Brailsford on the Beeb. Interesting to hear that Ineos have signed Adam Yates from Mitchelton Scott for the beginning of next season. I've always rated Adam and his twin brother and he should be a great signing for Ineos. The next British TDF winner perhaps ?
