It didn't make sense for Hughes to play 4-4-2. There were a lot of things that went wrong for Hughes towards the end and he should have been sacked in the summer after we finished 13th, but I don't think we should re-write history here. Aside from a brief spell in December 2015 when we beat both Manchester clubs and Everton by playing an innovative 4-3-3 with Bojan as the 'false 9', all our best football under Hughes came when we played 4-2-3-1 with one of Ireland, Adam or Bojan playing as the attacking midfielder. The whole side was pretty much built for that formation until 2017 when he started to deviate for no clear reason. We were never really blessed with outstanding strikers during the Hughes era and I can't really say I think we'd have benefited from dropping a creative midfielder to accommodate playing Diouf and Crouch up front at the same time, or (worse) Crouch and Berahino.
