I know it’s early but this is another massive game for us after the poor performance this afternoon.
Team selection and attitude crucial. I think MON thought the anxiety the players had showed earlier in the season may have been down to the crowd reactions but he clearly knows now that is not the case and it’s the players themselves.
So what team to pick.....with so many issues! Baath is clumsy and panics but I actually thought Chester was worse! We desperately need Shawcross fit!
So......
Butland
Smith Baath Shawcross if not Collins. Indi....no real alternative.
Clucas Cousins Thompson
Ince Campbell McClean
If not drop Ince and put another midfielder in Sorensen?
We just have to be solid!

I really don't get how Wigan can be 2.8/1 to win and we are 2.55/1?
They've had six clean sheets in a row, are bang in form, we're the complete opposite, minus our one half-decent player.
We continue to be so over-rated it's weird.

4-3-3 is absolutely not the answer. It was shit under Rowett, it was shit under Jones and it remains shit under O'Neil.
I have no idea what team I'd pick to be honest because in the main most of them are pretty crap. Ince probably did enough in his sub appearance to start on Tuesday, as did Smith. The rest I'm not so sure about.
I'd probably go;
Butland Edwards, Ryan, Collins, Smith Ince, Clucas, Cousins, McLean Vokes, Campbell
I can't stand Vokes but he probably brings more space and opportunity for Campbell. We could go with the greater mobility of Gregory but he's toss and if Diouf can't figure on the bench with the extra subs allowed, he must be miles off.

Butland
Smith Bathh Collins Tymon
Ince Clucas Cousins McClean
Vokes Campbell
Simple 442, Cousins sitting in front of the back four. Get the ball wide and put crosses into the box. Scrap and fight for every ball. Basic football.
Don’t rate Cousins at all and his cameo today was just laughable, but he’s the only midfielder we’ve got with a bit of strength.

We continue to be so over-rated it's weird. Bookies always seem to do it. Purely based on the size of the respective clubs . I like a bet now and again and Ipswich were ridiculous odds at times this season when they were playing horrendous, had s couple of nice wins by backing so called little clubs against them. Mind you as always I gave it back to the bookies later in the season !!

We need to find a way of getting Powell and Campbell around Vokes (obviously Powell missing for this game).
For me our best attacking display came at Huddersfield, with Powell just off Vokes with Campbell and McClean either side.
I'd be tempted to play that at Wigan but with Campbell centrally and Ince out wide, who I thought was the best of a bad bunch after coming on.
Either that or Campbell wide and Oakley-Boothe through the middle.
4231 for me gets the best out of us going forward but obviously leaves us light in midfield, however we are light anyway with a three. Vokes gives us the opportunity to vary the game and stretch it when it needs to, which might give our midfielders more space to play which they clearly need.
We just have to ditch this ridiculous 433 by any means we can.
We also have to ditch James Chester, who is fastly making Steven Tweed look passable.

The midfield is a massive worry, no combination is convincing or simply has enough presence to impose itself on the opposition.

Really thought we'd get something today....massive letdown

I think Ince on his second half today should start, God knows which midfield combination though, Clucas as a leader and dictator of play just doesn't work, he of all people massively misses Allen's presence.

Davies
Edwards-Collins-Macari-Wara
Dunwoody Pemberton-McClean Doucoure
Kyeremateng-Diouf
Subs: Noukeu, Chester, Oakley-Boothe, Verlinden, Sörensen, Campbell, Godfrinne
Some drastic actions must be done. Therefore eight new faces, where six of them start.

If I was the manager I'd be tempted to go drastic too. I'd play the players I think will be with us next season in the Third Division. It's not O'Neill's fault he's got so much dross but he doesn't have to play them.

Think I'd go 4-4-1-1 Butland Smith Lindsay Shawcross Tymon Ince Clucas Sorensen McClean Vokes Campbell 4-2-3-1 is the best set up for who we have and this is the closest we get atm and with Vokes dropping it could work......ish

I think the fat lady is gargling her larynx lubricant at the moment. We may hear her dulcet tones come Wednesday. I am resigned to relegation. Today was just disastrous. Season defining!

Christ I’m not sure what side I’d select. I guess Ince will be recalled, perhaps Collins will play and maybe Vokes will start. I’m going for a 442 formation
Butland Smith. Collins. Chester. Bruno Ince. Oakley-Boothe. Clucas. McClean Vokes. Campbell
Something tells me Campbell will be rested too however

I want two up front as our support play is woeful when we attack with one striker. With Powell out we have no one capable of creating anything unless Clucas suddenly rediscovers his pre lockdown form. For me Oakley Booth deserves the chance in Powell's position. He looks totally dejected when he walks to his place and must be thinking he did enough v Hull yet he has to sit and watch a bunch of players who cannot create a thing and want to pass responsibility to someone else all the time so pass back or run over the ball to allow someone else to take a shot. Having said that Ince's run across the area yesterday was probably the best thing we did in the box yesterday.

I've no idea what 11 we put out against Wigan. When we have a squad full of poor players who don't give a shit, it must be hard on the manager.

Placed this on the Boro thread but putting it here too just in case anyone at the club needs food for thought for the Wigan game and all the others that follow - fcuk me Leeds, Bristol, Brentford Forest and Barnsley!!
MON can carry out all the preparation necessary, provide the perfect game plan and provide all the correct motivation but when the players get out there and apply themselves individually and collectively the way they did yesterday, he must privately be holding his head in his hands. Too many of our players lacked the guts, bottle and the balls to compete effectively yesterday. Too many still think we're too good for this league and let us down with their lack of total commitment. Too many of them want to avoid taking responsibility and pass the buck. Too many of them can't even pass the buck accurately. Too many of them play their colleagues into danger. Too many of them are lazy in the way they deal with danger and then deal with it ineffectively. Too many of them are lazy and fail to get around their colleagues and support them. Too many of them are too lazy to provide the movement to open up options for their colleagues. Too many of them are too lazy so they just tip tap across the back four and then give a speculative hoof forward. Too many of them are too slow physically and mentally. Too many times we think a game owes us something rather than going out there and grabbing it by the balls. Too many times we fail to get going until the second half or at least until we have gone a goal down. There are still too many players who are not fit for purpose and are 'cheating' a living from Stoke. There are too many players who lack the required discipline and level of professionalism. There are too many who will just move on afterwards if we go down ........ BUT THIS IS OUR STOKE!!!! NOT YOURS, BECAUSE YOU'VE STILL GOT MUCH TO PROVE BEFORE YOU'RE PART OF THE RED AND WHITE!!
Now listen to MON carefully, man up and play with some desire for a full 90 minutes and prove to the supporters that you care as much as we do! GET ON WITH IT. The game owes you nothing but you owe our club and Stoke-on-Trent a great deal.
NOW PLAY WITH TOTAL COMMITMENT. DO IT FOR YOUR OWN SELF RESPECT AND SHOW GREATER RESPECT TO THE CLUB AND OUR SUPPORTERS.

I can see MON going to Wigan and set up very negatively with a 4-5-1 formation and try to pinch it late on by changing to a 4-4-2 formation.
On that basis we could see the following line up:
Butland
Smith Batth Chester Ward.
Ince Sorensen Cousens Clucas McClean
Vokes.
With 15 to go takes Cousens off and play Campbell alongside Vokes.
