Btw, the dictionary definition of sport starts with "an activity involving physical exertion and skill". Exertion is defined as "physical or mental effort.". So it does seem a grey area to me, as can you class throwing a dart as physical exertion? They're obviously concentrating very hard and working to control their body movements, and a golfer is clearly using physical effort to walk around a golf course and to take shot, but it does seem like a real grey area to me compared to things like martial arts and football that require undoubted "physical exertion". There was a big to do over here when a disabled golfer wanted to compete on the tour but use a cart. The PGA hit back with its illegal because your not using the same physical exertion as the other players.

Part of my gripe with this whole miscategorisation comes from fat old poker pros trying to class themselves as athletes. It comes across a bit sad to me.

This doesn't make sense, because why does something being a game rather than a sport mean that anyone can perform to a high level? That's a serious misunderstanding of what I wrote. Can anyone rock up and compete with a chess grandmaster just because chess is a game? The games that I singled out are great games, but the desire to classify games as sport is silly. I'm not belittling the achievements of those who sacrifice so much to become great at those games, but you can't tell me Stephen Lee or Andy Fordham are just as much athletes as Ronaldo or Khabib. Tiger Woods and Ronnie O'Sullivan are equal to Maradona and Messi in my opinion. Fair enough, I too would say they’re equal in terms of their genius and their relative impacts in their chosen fields, but I just don’t think Woods and o Sullivan especially can ever be classed as athletes - and even if you could class woods as an athlete I think you’d then struggle to argue he’s on Messi’s level in those terms.

For the record I don't think it should be a sport either, just playing devils advocate I suppose

Not to mention the fiasco with golf being added in Brazil and many players totally disrespecting the honour. I honestly believe Squash must be one of the most physically and mentally tough sports outside of the combat sports, and it’s also beautiful to watch, but money and power talks sadly. Seeing the queen’s granddaughter nonce around on her pony at London 2012 might’ve been what tipped me over the edge towards becoming a staunch republican. 😆

If the sports you mention were not sports then surely anyone and everyone would be able to do them to a decent standard and just pick them up from the off like you would with, say, Monopoly? Go and play a couple of rounds of golf or a couple of frames of snooker without any prior experience/practice and let me know how you get on. If a chess grandmaster told you what move to make each time you could beat anyone. If Phil Taylor told you how to chuck your dart you couldn't. If Garry Kasparov had no arms he could still be a chess grandmaster by telling someone else to move his pieces. It Tiger Woods had no arms he couldn't win a major by telling his caddy to take his shot.

There's no doubt that it should be an Olympic sport, of that I am certain. (Golf and Snooker are still sports though, ya big prick 😉).

TDC made a great point and certainly stopped my argument in its tracks, but then having thought it over I think this means that, by the same metrics, tiddlywinks is a sport? Squash as you rightly point out isn't even up for debate. And no need to feel shame, I love playing it more than any sport I've ever played but I'm hopelessly dogshit too. On the plus side I didn't shame my father by being so.

Back on the course tonight. Let's see if the work with my coach on Driver pays off tonight. What was the ball count?. I lost 4 last night. I need to crack this driving lark. It's like I got to the studio hit it well. I get to the course and I loose it. I wonder weather it's a mental thing maybe. Like pressure on myself because im on the tee box . I did hit 3 or 4 good drives

I got so fed up with the driver to the point it just stayed in my bag as a passenger. Then I got used to the 3 wood and iron that's all I ever used off the tee, distance was down of course but confidence went up. Then as soon as I thought, ok give it a go, everything fell apart again.

I wonder weather it's a mental thing maybe. Like pressure on myself because im on the tee box . I did hit 3 or 4 good drives I'd been struggling to hit driver consistently also since starting to play again. Watched loads of YouTube tutorials and tried to put the advice into action but it was still a lottery as to whether I made decent connection/hooked/pulled. Today though I decided to go back to my original technique (which had previously returned varying degrees of success) and didn't hit a bad tee shot with the driver all round. Wasn't getting mega distance but they were all straight and I got them into the air like I used to. This morning was only my 7th round since starting to play regularly again so I can't decide if overthinking was causing me to be shit and disregarding the video advice helped, or if it was just a culmination of regular playing gradually bringing the muscle memory back. Conversely, my usually solid short game was utter Ince today 😂

Same here, could never hit a driver consistently enough to take it out the bag. One chap that played regularly in our group dutifully pulled the biggest bag of clubs I've ever seen around the course day in day out but only ever used the sand wedge and the putter. He reasoned he could consistently hit his SW 150 yards straight each time so most greens he could get to in 3 shots and as we always played for money he was happy with that low risk approach
