I don't want to necessarily debate her views on each individual subject one by one as there's probably enough threads already on them, it was more to say that surely we can do better for our great city (one which often has an unfair image problem) than this woman as Lord Mayor? It's cringeworthy for a person in office...... Lord Mayor apologiesStoke-on-Trent Lord Mayor Jackie Barnes has apologised for 'any offence caused' after sharing what have been condemned as 'racist' and 'divisive' posts on her personal Facebook page. The Trent Vale ward councillor has now referred herself to Stoke-on-Trent City Council's standards committee so a full investigation can be carried out. The City Independent still holds the ceremonial role after the 2020/21 mayor-making ceremony was delayed until September due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2020/21 Lord Mayor will be former British National Party parliamentary candidate Melanie Baddeley. But there are now calls for Mrs Barnes to stand down as Lord Mayor immediately. The recent shared posts include: Highlighting the case of a white girl murdered by an Albanian immigrant which included the phrase 'no-one protested or rioted for me'; A post headed: 'On May 22, 2013, no-one rioted in the UK when two black men hacked Lee Rigby to death. Where were you all then'; A post about a 'group of black men' attacking two police officers in London. In contrast, there are also posts denouncing racism - including an image of a white baby and a black baby playing together with the caption, 'God created life, not races'. In a statement, Mrs Barnes said: “I have taken the decision to self-refer through the council’s standards process because I hold the office of Lord Mayor, and my role as a councillor, in the highest regard.

It questions her wider judgement too. Why would such a public figure post something contentious on social media and think it wasn't going to come back and bite them on the arse?
Thick as a plasterer from Fylde.

She hosted an event at the town hall that I went to last year she was quite charming and certainly had a love of the city. Perhaps this is a result of a night on the pop because she must surely know in the circumstances of the present hysteria passing any comment of any kind is just stupidity beyond belief.

I completely agree with the other posters comments on the thread and how anyone thought an idiotic ex BNP councilor would be a good choice for lord Mayor is beyond my comprehension. I am seeing an increasing narrative in many recent events that concerns me though and that is "Silence is complicit", it is a dangerous statement that may include many people who simply don't know, don't understand or simply would rather live life with the best of intentions and not get involved with the debate of the day. It is very much a "your either with us or against us" statement and only serves to divide.

Forgive me if I've got this wrong but I always thought that being Lord Mayor is a case of serving the community/ being there long enough and is therefore slightly above politics. I'm sure if we look back far enough we've had a fair share of appointees to the post that are at the end of political life.

Here you go from wiki. The position of Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent is largely ceremonial. The role of Lord Mayor is decided upon by a vote amongst the elected councillors of Stoke-on-Trent City Council; the candidates are also selected from the councillors. The current Lord Mayor is Councillor Jackie Barnes en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_lord_mayors_of_Stoke-on-Trent

But not always when they sit in public office. She didn't leave her bigoted view of the world behind when she took on the role, she carried on tweeting them......
