Cecil Rhodes is a gonna in Oxford.
Do you think stealth removal for a quiet life is the direction of travel?

I am currently interested in the First Duke of Sutherland, a statue of whom stands prominantly on a hill of the Trentham Estate. Amongst the Duke's subsidiary titles were Viscount Trentham and Marquis of Stafford.
The Duke was one of the wealthiest landowners in Britain during the mid nineteenth century, but is a very controversial figure in Scotland as the Duke and Duchess were criticized for their role in the Highland Clearances, when thousands of tenants were evicted and resettled in coastal villages. This allowed the vacated land to be used for extensive and much more profitable sheep farming, replacing the mixed farming carried out by the previous occupants. The changes on the Sutherland estate were motivated by two major objectives. The first was to increase the rental income from the estate: sheep farmers could afford much higher rents. The second was to remove the population from the recurrent risks of famine. Most former crofters struggled with the resettlement and many of these did not accept their new homes and felt compelled to emigrate.
Where the Duke's family held substantial property, especially in the County of Sutherland in Scotland, attacks on family memorials have been common, and at least one prominent statue there is under threat of attack, because of the unfortunate history associated with the commemoration.
I wonder if the Trentham Statue will be removed as it is a very well known and prominent symbol of repression. Or perhaps it is at risk if it remains in Situ.

I find scenes of mobs tearing down and defacing statues unedifying. Why couldn't those behind the tearing down of the Colston statue in Bristol have started an on line petition to the Council to remove the statue? It would probably have achieved the desired result. Those who choose to deface statues of Churchill need to ask themselves what kind of existence they would have had if Churchill had not stood up to the Nazis. Let us not forget that there were plenty of appeasers in the Tory Party in June 1940 who thought he was mad to pursue the war. By all means educate youngsters about some of his other shortcomings but his role in opposing Nazi Germany overrides all other consideration in my view. Thus speaks a boring old fart.

I think other characteristics of the Left are a lack of tolerance for any other viewpoint, resorting to personal attacks, quick to judge, offering nothing but criticism , a total " I know best" attitude without trying to listen to the genuine concerns of ordinary people. The BLM organisation and Antifa are expressions of this....although this latest episode was done by Extinction Rebellion.....there seems to be no positive attempt to win over people...rather an attempt to condemn those who don't think like they do.

By 'ordinary' I read it as 'regular person in the street', 'Average Joe', that kind of thing.

Beat me to it 😎 Regarding your previous post, social media is awash with attitudes like that (they go strangely quiet when challenged though...). Yet apparently this board is an echo chamber 🤷

John seems to think that those who share his viewpoint are “ordinary”, and those that don’t, well who knows how he classified them that’s for him to answer I guess.....
